GAF Series of Poker - Postmortem Discussion Thread

Ok, the GAF Series of Poker is more or less over now (ie- i'm out :).

Overall, it's been pretty fun, but the attendance for the last 5 events has been completely abysmal, and has never even come close to the mass amount of people that feigned interest in the first thread.

Was wondering what happened? I realize that the Internet on a whole is completely unreliable place for any sort of organized gathering or competition (especially a structured one with preorganized times that not everyone can meet), and that GAF has approximately the attention span of a gnat, which would deplete numbers for an extended event like this.

Still, I want to get some discussion going about the tournament as a whole, generally to gauge whether or not I choose to do a second one, and what changes should be made to the format, if any, in the meantime. Right now I'm leaning towards not doing a full-blown second one, due to the apparent lack of interest from alot of people.

Edit: I'd like to thank everybody who competed, because all of the games were great fun, and, with the exception of the Omaha event, went pretty smoothly due to everybody's cooperation.

Duscuss.

Yeah a sticky would be good, and I hoped more Europeans would have showed up :/

Other than that, I thought it was great.

Perhaps if we play for a real prize next time more interest will be garnered? Maybe somebody would donate a game or something?

I had fun overall, but the Poker.com client was really a pain in the ass all the way around for me. I'm on 56k, so not realizing that the software needed an update until 20 minutes before one of the tournaments was a pain in the ass. Especially when the update takes 45 minutes and I hold everyone up.

That, and the Poker.com client itself was a piece of shit. All the people having troubles connecting and such. Also, the games just played so damn slowly even when everyone was fully attentive. Pretty bad lag when entering commands (just making a check would take like 5 seconds). The way the blinds worked also made the games take wayyyy too long for my taste. Especially tourney before last when we had 6 per table and the top 2 advanced - so much safe playing going on and it took forever for the blinds to go up. Admittedly, after two hours of playing that night I decided to go all-in so I could either be put out of my misery or be rejuvenated with a big stack - I didn't really care if I won or lost and that's not too great :x

I'd participate in any further tourneys, even if you used the Poker.com client, just because I like playing with you guys, but a much better alternative really needs to be found.

There has to be something out there that lets you host games on your own connection and with customization.... I hope? (other than the IRC client)

I'll try and take a look around.

And congratulations to whoever wins/won!

There's an open source one that I was playing around with and testing, but it was too buggy to use. The interface was a LOT better than Poker.com's, but there were bugs in it that actually made it unplayable (ie, if you timed out in a tourney, you wouldn't be able to sit back in, and all-ins weren't handled correctly).

As far as I know, there are no free alternatives, other than the IRC one.

The blinds are something I wouldn't change... the blind levels and speeds seemed alright... it just seemed slower because the client was so slow-paced. A good single table SnG format should take just a bit longer than an hour to complete. Any less and the luck in winning completely overtakes any semblance of skill.

omg, I won tonight. Thanks for getting the tourney set up and for seeing through it, despite the hiccups, Zimbu!

Great game tonight guys, lots of chip leader shifting. GG Dark, Archaix, Zimbu, and everyone.

Congrats to Archaix for being the point winner.

Congrats Scarlet. I wish I could have played with you guys tonight.

On a whole I enjoyed the series of events and tourneys. Maybe like Newbie said a sticky would help get attendance up. I really hope another tournement gets setup soon.
