Guys, CYE is horrible.
1. The Wire. If anyone has noticed anything about me, it's probably this: I disagree with the GAF consensus probably 80% of the time. And even when I agree, it's usually for different reasons than those cited by the most recognizable of GAFfers. But with The Wire, they've nailed it. Emotionally difficult to watch and at the same time laugh-out-loud hilarious, this is as good as GAF claims. If, like me, you usually find yourself put-off by GAF-ommendations, don't be. This is the greatest show of all time.
2. The X-Files
3. Cheers
4. Extras
5. Hill Street Blues (I need to see more of this)
6. Star Trek TOS. Rubber suits and all.
7. The Twilight Zone. Thoughtful and fascinating.
8. NYPD Blue
9. Sesame Street. Old school Street.
10. The Cosby Show. Probably nostalgia, but as you can see from my last choice, I had a hard time coming up with 10 shows I really like.
Notes that no one will read:
Seinfeld would be on but I'm not including it out of spite for its internet popularity.
I loved the first 3 seasons of 24 but have despised the rest for their pandering.
Though I haven't seen all of it, from what I have seen, Lost blows. It's embarrassingly convinced of its own brilliance.
Loved Firefly but not enough to put it on for one season (Extras deserves it despite having half the episodes of Firefly).
Battlestar would be on (though I don't fawn over it) if it wasn't for the unbelievably senseless Trembling Baltar and his Cylon ghost-whore.
Havn't seen Band of Brothers. I'm virtually certain this would be in the top 5.
Office UK >>>> Office US.
Always thought Simpsons was a good show, but rarely a great one, even during the Conan hey-day.
Only watched the first episode of Arrested Development, which seemed like it was trying to be clever for its own sake. Not going to judge it based on that, but it didn't make me want to watch more.
Sopranos had 1.5 seasons of greatness spread over 6 seasons.
I like a lot of 80s shows like Quantum Leap, MacGyver, but don't feel they hold up today, much to my disappointment.
Friends was great for about 3 seasons then Monica and Chandler, inexplicably, became the focal point and the show was ruined. It makes me angry to watch the later seasons (the other characters got fucked up too, and Aniston stopped being super-hot) because it's unrecognizable from its greatness.
Family Guy was great in its time but it should have been allowed to fizzle out.
I'm bored with my own notes. Bye!
