GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

It lets you choose which partition you want. I got an NTFS one for large files on Windows, FAT32 for Windows/Mac compatibility, MAC OS Extended for large files on Mac, and WBFS for the Wii... all on a 250 gb passport x.x Stupid formats.

Sorry if this has been answered (this thread is huge)

what is the likelihood that nintendo would be able to detect you having a cIOS installed?

Quickest explanation possible:

Wii's operating system is called IOS. Your Wii has "256 slots" for IOS. Every program on the Wii runs a different slot of IOS. Some games might use IOS9, some might use IOS30. The cIOS we're referring to here is a modified version of Nintendo's IOS35, which had a security hole in it. When you install it, it installs into slot 249, which is unused by Nintendo.

Nintendo knows this. An off the shelf Wii bought today has garbage data in IOS slot 249. In the future, there will have to be some crafty tricks used to hide the cIOS.

If Nintendo were to check a Wii with cIOS on it, they'd be able to see cIOS. On the other hand, they probably wouldn't bother. Plenty of people send in their broken Wii to Nintendo with homebrew channel installed, they don't even remove it.

In the future, Nintendo might attempt to block the cIOS stuff or somehow interfere, but this is not a worry. Nintendo won't brick your Wii, Nintendo won't ban you from online play. There's no risk here. You will only get banned for cheating, and they even do a bad job at that.

Moreover, everything you do to your Wii's IOS files is reversible. If it ever became an issue, there would be an easy out. The process is a little more complicated than my super simple guide to hacking your Wii, but there's still no worries.

Good luck.

Quick question.Once you have an external HDD cleared and formatted through the USB Loader can it no longer be recognized by a PC unless reformatted again?Just wondering because I don't want to use a 500 GB+ HDD solely for the 5 Wii games I own :lol

I can't speak for SpanishSSJGOKU44's USB Loader, but Ultimate USB Loader gives you a list of partitions and unpartitioned space. It lets you delete a partition or create a partition in unpartitioned space. It doesn't do dynamic resizing--if your 500 gig hard drive is fully used by the current partition, downsize the current partition (using Partition Magic, stock Windows Vista, or just backing stuff up, deleting everything, and then recreating a smaller partition) before you start Ultimate USB Loader.

Okay, I followed that guide from above, but, when I run the third program, it does something, then hangs on a black screen.

Which "third program"? The route you have to take to hack your Wii varies based on the firmware you have and what you want to do.

Do you mean the third option in CMDVDX34? Some people have reported that CMDVDX34 hangs during various steps, but it generally does apply the patches. Try powering off your Wii manually and then trying again, or moving on to the next step even though it seems like the previous step did not work.

I think I had similar issues. I never got Ultimate HD loader to work but I have that 1.4 by Waninko working.

yeah, it was the 3rd option. it just went to a black screen. tried it twice, same thing.

moved on to the next step, and both ran fine, but it still says i'm on 4.0, and I still have the sd card menu. is that normal?

It is normal for your firmware version to stay the same, yeah. The "downgrades" you're doing in those steps aren't conventional downgrades, they're simply inserting the holes into the operating system necessary to install cIOS35! You can fully downgrade your firmware to an actual stock 3.2 or whatever, but there's no reason to do so. The "downgrading" you're doing is very selective.

Continue to the next step--If the cIOS35 v10 installation works fine, then the preceding steps worked fine! :D

I will make a note in the tutorial that the CMDVDX34 hang thing happens to some people and that it's benign. I'll also make a note about the firmware version number thing.

If you have any other trouble through the rest of the install process, feel free to ask any questions.

Stumpokapow, great work. Can I suggest one addition, though?

Insert a link after the install instructions which says, "So now, how do I download and install games I don't own?" Link that to a page which says, "Oops, the page you requested doesn't exist. If you found this page by following a link, please post to the Wii Homebrew thread on GAF and let us know about the error and what you wanted to do."

Perhaps add an "Are you sure?" question page between the two to give some fair warning. In any case, it'll be fun to watch any bans that ensue.

hahaha. dragona already gave me a talking to over the initially more obnoxious flashing gif logo, she'll flip her lid if i try to trick the lemmings into walking off the cliff! :D

Sorry to hear. A new exploit may be coming soon to fix your problem, and we'll be sure to update the thread title when that happens as well as my guide.

Because I only have myself to blame (I had the HBC installed but copied it to the SD card when I updated to 4.0) it's hard to feel too bitter. I feel stupid, mostly.

So again, should I just randomly out of the blue install preloader even if I'm not upgrading or changing anything? I like the idea of a safe catch-all that will restore my Wii in case something goes wrong and bricks it.

Or is there some risk in installing preloader that could actually screw something up itself?

Ok, Metroid Prime 3 with the USB Loader it's the BEST THING EVER.

Opening doors? Just shoot and walk by, that's it my friends, no loading no waiting.

HOLY SHIT IMPRESSIVE GAHHHhhh!

Can't wait to play again Prime 1 and 2 New Play Control this way, it'll be such an awesome experience adding to the awesome the games are that my brain could implode from the awesomeness.

Seeing your games' lists, can i ask what's the point of ripping games like Mario Kart and Brawl? You can't play them online... can you at least still share the saves, right?
I guess I'll have to hook up my Geometry Wars Galaxies dvd as well once in a while, just to upload my scores to the leaderboards :/

Oh my god... Stupid 4.0 :(
That sounds too good.

I suggest you take a look at the top of the wiibrew page for Preloader, specifically this text:
This homebrew application will brick your Wii if you misuse it!
Please ensure you fully understand what it does and how to use it before you run it.

Saying that, the author states he's tried to make it as safe as possible, but you never know.

I'm choosing not to install it. BootMii will do the same thing, but in a safer way, and is not too far away.

No online through Ultimate USB Loader 7.4? Really? I only tried it with Link's Crossbow Training on a USB stick to make sure it worked but that's disappointing.

I didn't know this, is it really the case? I can understand not being able to play with the LAN Adapter, but does it block you playing through wireless as well?

Beaten, should of refreshed the page :p.

K, thanks for the info. I'll skip installing it then. I think I'll also skip upgrading to 4.0 until BootMii is out and it's safer.

I finally got the ultimate USB loader working. Thank you. I think the issues I'm having with some of the other stuff is because I don't have a wireless connection yet.

Could you make a for dummies thing for adding pictures to the games? :)
I gave up tying until I get my HDD but I did make an icon for the loader to display in HBC.

icon.png

It would be nice if someone made the sides transparent since all I have is Paint.

Looks a little tacky......

Do you want text on there? If so, what would you like?

Wow.

Wait, do you mean the 4.0 update they released at GDC, or Homebrew Channel's 4.0 update so I can have 4.0 without HBC going bye-bye?

why is it that every goddamn HDD works with this loader except the one i actually bought 3 enclosures for?

*sigh*
Why not just return the enclosures and make a one-time investment on a WD My Passport?

comedy bomb said:

Sure.

If you mean adding pictures to homebrew (stuff that's in the Homebrew Channel), all you need is a 128x48 PNG file called "icon.png" in the folder the homebrew uses (sd://apps/appnamehere/)

If you mean adding pictures to games inside Ultimate USB loader, those will actually automatically download if your Ultimate USB Loader has internet access!

But if you want do it manually, that's super easy too!

Go here
Check the checkboxes next to every game you want.
Click "Zip and prepare download" at the bottom.

So I found a website that has all of the games covers I own in one handy dandy zip file. Now what do I do with them? :lol :lol

You want to unzip the zip and put it in a folder called sd://images/ for 4:3 tvs or sd://wimages for widescreen tvs. I can't remember if the zip and prepare download function automatically does the folder structure or not.

More Ultimate USB Loader help:
You might also find that when you rip your games that they aren't named properly. Perhaps Wii Play is named "PARTY PACK FOR REVOLUTION" or something stupid like that. This can be easily fixed.

Go here to download titles.txt. Put it in your USBLoader folder (sd://apps/usbloader/ or whatever you ended up calling it). Ta-da! Problem solved!

Best of luck getting your Wii working wirelessly or getting the USB adapter working properly!

I can integrate this stuff into the for dummies tutorial tomorrow.

I'm giddy with excitement to get home and hack my Wii, buy TvC and backup all my games to a hard drive. I can't remember the last time the homebrew community brought so many immediately convenient things to gamers, especially so early in its life-cycle.

...nah.

The enclosures are 10 bucks apiece, and I have the laptop HDD here already, might as well use it.

If anything I can just use my internal PC HDD with an enclosure, as i know that works already, but it's not my first choice as its bulky and requires extra power.

But I am not willing to spend any sort of major money for a HDD to only use with the Wii.

Complete newbie to all of this, is it possible to copy my GameCube games and launch them off HDD, like you guys are doing with Wii games? Could be a selling point for me...

I'm looking at either buying a SDD USB/eSata thumbdrive, or snagging a decently sized flashdrive for form factor.

So, does anyone know how to get the Monster Hunter tri Trial running on a Wii using Homebrew Channel? Screen just goes black, remotes won't sync with Wii, and I can't do anything without resetting with the power button :(

Is this via import? Sounds like you are using an import fix that doesn't properly support IOS55. Try getting Gecko OS 1.8.

I'm not sure if this has been answered, but it seems like this thread may be the best place to ask... For those of you who are creating your own homebrew stuff, how do you normally test builds? Is my best bet to use a GC/Wii emulator on my PC? I managed to find a place online that sells the "SD Media Launcher" device for the GameCube, but it'd be nice if I could actually test builds -- especially when they're super early -- without having to go through the hassle of copying it to the card and going through the launcher process.

is there anything that can go wrong with this? I installed ultimate 7.4 and downloaded a bit titles.txt (to put parental controls on it), and a bunch of images to sd:\images\ but its not showing any images at all, and it isn't downloading any. I have internet access as I used it to install CIOS rev10

the only thing i wish is that it would show the title of the game and how long you've played on the wii message board, instead of showing "homebrew channel"

small price to pay for convenience though. i just need to get a hard drive and rip my games. tried AC:CF with a 1gb usb thing I have, and it worked like a charm. Not so much loading time. Not that loading time was BAD, really..it's just annoying (especially when you accidentally enter a building you don't mean to)

can't wait to get a HDD and rip my Metroid Prime 3! Maybe then I can actually finish that game.

edit: this thing also made me realize just how perfect Animal Crossing would be as a downloadable game. It's the perfect kind of game to always have available, without having to pop a disc in.
