GAFers with both the Xbox One and PS4...

Never touched a DS4 or Bone controller.

Which is best for FPS games? Which do you guys prefer? Never really thought about it until the "offset sticks quote."

Generally DS4, if you have large hands you will prefer it more. The XB1 controller is slightly smaller and feels slightly hollow/breakable in my hands, never experience the impact triggers at all only a few games support that feature at all.

Sure --- in my own experience starting with 360 vs ps3 I feel the xbox online experience just "works" better. Less lag / better connections. Remember that ps3 online was advertised as free when it came out. I told my fanboy friends "you get what you pay for" and I noticed lots of crap lag on ps3 games. I also hated how the ps3 OS had piss poor online functionality built in: NO notification-> guide button accepts / party chat between multiple games / OS level game invites (versus game specific invite functions) ala 360.

Fast forward to x1 vs ps4, the jury is still out. MSFT has butchered the operating system functionality of the 360 and parsed everything out into separate applications. Game invites are now a mix of operating system AND game specific invites (Killer Instinct). I'm not sure if this was true for 360 as well but I just remember using my guide button to pull up friends and invite them in games for Halo and Gears (and do it quite quickly as well).
I also feel MSFT probably still has a server advantage so my infrastructure comment also relates to that. Additionally I felt they had a stronger online community of multiplayer gamers. However, that may be over after their launch blunder.

So basically you don't have a PS4 and your conclusions are based on assumptions with no factual support or even experience.

Solid footing you got right there.

I'm actually going against the grain here and will be selling my ps4. Ive noticed I use my xbone more and switch to pc for other games of interest. Maybe by 2016 that will change but at the moment the xbone is primary choice to play in my living room.

No -- actually per my original post I have both systems (day one on both). And per my response you are quoting, in my opinion the jury is still out on what system will be goto for multiplats. If xbox can revamp their operating system I would probably prefer that system. If PS4 counters and can imitate the 360 functionality they'll have an advantage.

I have also modded my DS4 with x1 thumbs because that is just a poor ergonomic choice by SNE convex thumbtops.

I have ghosts on ps4, trials on x1 and made those choices on who I'd be playing with.

You can't use 360 v PS3 to measure better online infrastructure to XB1... if so then you can say XB1 have better multiplatforms because 360 had.

From my anedoctal view PS4 had a bigger online community (no brainier here... bigger user base), XB1 had more issues with online features (notifications, party chat, patch downloads, etc) and MS had more issues with online match play (Titanfall launch month was really a mess with servers down each two days).

Right now seems like a tie because a lot of things was improved on XB1 to catch the PS4.

Default purchase: PC

if not on PC, then whichever console runs the game the best (almost certainly PS4).

I really only have my PS4 and Xbox One (and WiiU) for exclusives. My PC can do absolutely everything my PS4 and Xbox One can do, including remote display, the TV stuff, recording playback, voice commands, etc.

I'm referring to you assessment of the online infrastructure which you assume is superior based on a "feeling" or because the 360 was indeed better so how couldn't the X1 be this gen.

The rest of your arguments make sense but that one holds no weight.

Usually where most of my friends have the game if there's any sort of multiplayer/coop. Right now, the majority are on XB1.

Slight power difference.... O_o. Okay I will abandon this thread but it sucks people think there is only a slight power difference. I cannot wait till a few years in when both consoles have a good stable of exclusive games that actually show the real power difference. Its not slight at all.

Power is everything.

Please re-read your first quote-reply to me. I stand by everything in that quote block. Everything was historical and made no future guarantee based on my historical observations. I used the word "had" in it. I did not claim a victor and I only opined that I "felt" xbox probably has better servers going forward which I do stand by. Based on 360's online experience I have to make that jump. Their servers were pretty good, no?

I'm so confused are you playing on a X1 and PS4 right now?
If so then you would know that as far as lag is concerned or anything to do server wise there isn't a disparity between the two. I don't even know if 360 technically had better servers last gen but the party system and integration with the 360 dash was what made it a superior environment.

Yes I have PS4 and X1. I mentioned I modded my ds4 thumbsticks with x1's.
I did preface my posts as my opinion so I respect if you feel I am incorrect. From my experience I felt the ps3 games I played and observed had bad multiplayer and made me feel their free servers were wonky. I was paying for xbla of course and coupled with the superior OS I felt they had a great experience.

This made me feel going forward in some way xbox has great servers, they just butchered the OS. just my opinion.
I also feel the twitch streams are a little better on x1. Gamewise I have noticed no online problems in resogun and Destiny, but I felt Ghosts was off a bit.

Multiplats on PS4, though I haven't touched them yet aside from Outlast (other multiplat is MGS GZ) due to still being on a Titanfall kick, family visits, and working through other backlogs.

Love both the systems though, and may change up the multiplat preference depending on community. Right now, most of my GAF and personal friends are through Xbox Live, but when TLOU Remastered and Destiny roll around that is likely to even out. Evolve will likely be the tipping point since that's a community-focused title.

However, once I get my PC rig up, most of my multi plats will default to that platform. I want my games to play and look the best they can, which is why PS4 has been getting the love on that front, but when it comes to mp titles I want a healthy balance between performance and community.

Never touched a DS4 or Bone controller.

I'm not sure, both feel great IMO. I want to say the XBO controller, but that's been the one I've been using the most and exclusively for Titanfall. PS4 controller felt pretty good though when playing Shadowfall.

It's about time you got on GAF, N4G can't be saved.

About the controller, I prefer the stick placement of the XBO for FPS games, but for other games it feels somewhat awkward. I also don't like how small the heads are and that they're so loose. DS4 has sticks closer together, but I prefer the tightness and using R1 to shoot.

Hey man :D. Yeah i should have joined here a long time ago, N4G has gone to shit.

One of the reasons i loved the 360 controller last gen was the resistance in the sticks, which was one of the reasons why i hated the DS3, they were too loose. Now it's the other way around. It's so weird going from PS4 to X1, especially when i go from BF4 to Titanfall, Titanfall feels so loose because of the X1 sticks and i always over-aim.

No biggie, though. You get used to it after a few matches.

I agree with most of this. DS4 has superior dpad placement which is great for mercenary kings. I do hope to see a flux of AA retro 2D co-op online. If that happens DS4 will be king.
Their superior dpad placement is bad for it's symmetrical thumbstick IMO.

There's only a few games that had dedicated servers (Gears, a few others). The party system etc were on their servers, but a lot of games used P2P. The PS3 had the same set-up, only the invites were handled game by game (which was too loose, 360's was better ease of use), Resistance 2 and a few others had dedicated servers that worked the same.

The thing about dedicated servers for both systems is that its mainly a developer choice, both are largely going to be the same experience running via Amazon or Azure, etc.

The issue is not your opinion, its just not based on something tangible other than the previous generation.

no one said they are the only things that matter but you can still care about graphics and power differences if all you ever do is play on consoles.

but you're right I jumped in late so I'll let it go

That's cool... yep was responding to this:

As in, it has better specs and therefore its the better game console.

Anyways, response was if that specs are what matters in determining what's the best thing, then the PC trumps the consoles.

But yep, I agree with you, consoles are great, PCs are great, you're great, I'm great, MMaRsu is great, life is great, yahtzee.

Ludicrous nonsense.

its perfectly reasonable to care about power differences between CONSOLES and not really care about PC gaming

No it's not.

Either power matters to you or it doesn't. This gen Sony fanboys care about the power difference, last gen they tried to downplay it. Last gen Microsoft fanboys cared about power, now they try to downplay it.

It's been that way forever and it always will be.

Yes it is. See there are these things called opinions. Pcs suck in the living room and often the extra power isn't used by devs. The pc version of wd ran like shit.

That there are fanboys/hypocrites in the world doesn't mean anything.

Where do you get off actually trying to say that it's unreasonable to be a console only gamer and care about specs? Seriously, listen to yourself.

if all I want to spend is $400 on a console and I have no interest in PC gaming but I want the machine with better specs, at that point I care which console is more powerful. What is so hard about this to understand?

I didn't even say anything about freaking fanboys, There are lots of people who only want the more powerful console and use that to inform their purchasing decisions in every generation.

He's not wrong tho. There's plenty of people that will attest to online games performing worse on PS3. Namely fighters. Street Fighter 4 for certain as ive experienced that.

You know this really depends on the game. Obviously if the features are exactly the same then I'll most likely go with PS4. But I have a good amount of friends on my Xbox Live account that love sports games so I'll probably get all of those there.

What? It's not as black and white as you are making it out to be. I only own an X1 and a PS4, I don't own a gaming PC, and i definitely care about power. I care that PS4 multiplats look and run better X1 multiplats, and i care that the PS4 is more powerful than the X1, whilst completely ignoring that fact that PC wipes the floor with both. Your belief that people can't care about the power difference between consoles without also caring about PC is ridiculous.

I think I was one of them.

No regrets Miles no regrets.

Sony may have all but abandoned it, but it's still one of the greatest handhelds I've ever owned.

Depends on what you're referring to. MS's use of Azure makes the Xbox One experience better to me than on PS4, which feels kinda cold in comparison. I'm referring specifically to the way they immediately upload all videos to both the Upload channel and to the store, so whenever I'm looking at a game, I can see the latest footage people took. It's actually helped me make buying decisions (sorry Worms and Wolfenstein!). I also love the friend system on XBL far more than on PS4/PS3/360. That's all part of the OS/Ecosystem that people refer to when they say they prefer one over the other.

I think such comments are made without consideration of cost. Even without a PC, you're spending between $800 to $900 for the Xbox One and PS4. Not everybody is going to drop $2000 to own every current piece of hardware, that doesn't mean they don't care about the differences.

I have both PS4 and Xbone. Just ordered the refurb Wii U.

I am actually considering selling the PS4, as the exclusives are few and far between, and the Xbone controller is far better than the DS4.

Controller on Xbone means I get shooters and multiplayer for it, and single-player multiplats for PS4 because of the slightly better graphics. Exclusives you get for each console of course.

I find myself playing Ryse, DR3, Forza, Titanfall, and Wolfenstein on Xbone a lot, and I hardly touch my PS4.

Xbone exclusives to this point >>>>>>>>>> PS4 exclusives.

I will sell my PS4 to someone who is interested. System + DS4 + KZ, NFS, INFAMOUS, COD, BF4, MGSGZ, AC4. All of this for $600. If you want a Vita too w/ Sly Cooper and KZ - $800 for everything. PM me.

If you don't own both consoles and don't have any idea of how both systems operate, STOP POSTING. You are not part of the discussion.

I own everything and primarily buy all third party games on PS4, unless I have friends getting something multiplayer focused on Xbox One like Destiny. Then Nintendo is of course for Nintendo games. Just how I'm going this gen until Xbox One has more games that put out at 1080p and faster frames I just feel that third party games will be PS4 mostly. Just when it comes to the specs that's the only reason I buy PS4 third party games as of now.

Ok
So it's just how the controller feels in your hand right?
Because the mapping for COD and BF4 are the same (Although the PS4 controller does add some touch pad functionality).

I'm far more comfortable and accurate with the default control scheme on the XB1 controller. I don't like the PS4 triggers for aim and fire. Uncomfortable, hurts accuracy, and awful when needed for semi auto.

Just my own experiences though.

Multiplats with any kind of graphical difference = best version (meant PS4 every time so far...)

Multiplats with no graphical difference at all = controller preference for genre (racing = xbox one, pretty much anything else = ps4)

Exclusives on each console

I basically default to PS4 though, I might gravitate towards it more and more just so I can drop XBL Gold at some point.

He's not wrong tho. There's plenty of people that will attest to online games performing worse on PS3. Namely fighters. Street Fighter 4 for certain as ive experienced that.

...which is what I said. It's mainly based on the last generation, despite both having similar setups. And a lot of that was regional and game dependent. Black Ops and MW3 ran fine for me, but Mass effect 3 was on a 1/5 games will disconnect thing.

It's just a weird thing to say when most games have the same setups. Like someone feels Cod will run better on the One while ignoring the specs.

And I'm derailing, so I'll stop.

Lol at "you should only have a PC if you care about specs". Suppose you care about specs and playing with a friend who doesn't like PC gaming?

PC for most multi plats + everything else it has.

Xbox One for some multi plats I'll play with friends and exclusives. Love the controller.

PS4 for exclusives.

Wii U for exclusives.

PS4 - Exclusives, all multi platform games, Netflix

Xbox One - Exclusives, timed exclusives, Twitch, YouTube, ESPN, Blu-rays

Wii U - Exclusives, timed exclusives

ok. I'm the crazy one, meanwhile you can go as far back as the NES probably and see that console power never mattered to anyone.

Where were you guys when PS2 sold 100+ million and Xbox was lucky to get 30 million? That's a pretty huge deficit for a system that was clearly more powerful.

you guys have never cared about power and never will. stop pretending.

How do you decide which console to buy games on? I feel bad if I leave one console sitting there without touching it for months on end...

I don't mind having one sit and bouncing back and forth. So far it has been multi console games on ps4 and the exclusives on their respective consoles. For me it is about having the flexibility to get the best version (since I don't play multiplayer for very long).

I will say that the xb1/wiiu have become the family consoles and the ps4 for the most part stays in my room so sometimes it comes down to the audience playing it.

This won't be a popular response but I tend to use my Xbox One more so than my PS4. PS4 no doubt has a lot of indies so I guess you can say they have more games but they are just not my type of flavor or quality. So far I've bought more multi-platform games for the One than the PS4 (regardless of resolution). I just like the Xbox One's user experience as a whole.

wow, no one is saying that power == better console or that power == the winning console or anything like that

we're simply saying that its possible for a individual person to care about power and only care about consoles.

you're blowing this up into something else

This.

But I/we do care though. Why can't you accept that without accusing us of pretending? I cared about it when i made the decision to get the PS4 before the X1, i care about it every time i decide whether to buy a multiplat on PS4 or X1, and i will carry on caring about it throughout this gen.

Yea, I don't understand how some people can't see both sides of the picture. I do tend to play something on PS4 if there's a resolution difference. At the same time, I still find have found that I tend to enjoy playing games more on the XBOX one. I got Trials on both systems and had a few weeks jumping back and forth. I also don't understand why a grown ass adult wouldn't have a PC in the house, but maybe I'm crazy.

most "grown ass" adults probably do have some kind of PC in the house yes, but is it a PC that can play modern games decently? less likely

X1 for the kinect.

A complete lifestyle change when i can hold my 3 month old son and turn my TV on, switch to a korean drama on HULU, and turn my tv volume up..

all without touching the controller or having to look for a remote

PS4. Honestly, when I bought my xbox one i played and finished ryse, then havent even turned it on since. It doesn't compel me to use any of the consoles other features so far . Waiting for a game I care about.

My XB1 remains untouched. I seriously don't use it, and would be getting rid of it if it weren't for the Master Chief collection. I cannot wait for that shit.

Unless it's down to some kind of huge performance jump or deficiency, it's going to be X1 for most multiplats because of my friends list and my preference for the controller.

In the recent E3 pre-order promotion from Bestbuy, 90% of the games I pre-ordered were multiplats on PS4. The rest were the respective exclusives on PS4 and Xbox One, and the Wii U. So that's my breakdown, multiplats and Sony exclusives on PS4, and just the Xbox exclusives on Xbox One, etc.
