GAF's Battle of the Rock Band Bands: ENCORE EDITION

I think I'm out for the full thing too, since I'll be gone a week and a half sometime during this. Maybe Gate and I could serve as backup band members.

Hey, guys, I'm considering a slight change of rules and wanna get feedback on any potential problems before I implement it:

Currently, along with the one predetermined song, each band picks one song that both they and their opponent must play that week, bringing the total number of songs per week to three. However, communication between four people being what it is, I suggest this be changed.

Instead, we'd vote as a group for two of the songs in the week leading up. I could either throw up a selection of songs from which you all would vote, or everyone could just nominate their own. DLC could still be a part of this process, but whatever two songs get the most votes must be played by all bands.

One song would still be decided by me, but it'd still be fun to have some audience participation in the song selection. Plus, it'd be a lot easier than coordinating amongst each band for a unique song.

If you guys agree, because of the late notice on this, one of the first week's songs could be "Still Alive" (which everyone should have by now) and we could all just vote on the second.

Whaddya guys think?

I like the idea of DLC being added in, but don't like the idea of buying DLC I have no interest in. I say that the one song that you pick be something off the disc, and then the two bands that are paired up all list their DLC. If there's something that all everyone has, then that can be up for selection as well.

Maybe the "band leader" can get with their bandmates and get the list of DLC and figure out what his/her full band has access to, and post that. That way we don't clutter the thread too much.

Just my idea.

I think this would leave us with only a handful of songs to play, as you would find many people do not have the same DLC. Worse comes to worse you would end up spending 10 bucks because of the competition.

On a totally different note, I nominate The Consequence of Sound as our band name.

I actually got in touch with members of OMD about this earlier today to see what they had, but am still waiting to hear from one. That said, I'd like to re-suggest my earlier idea of letting each band choose one DLC song on their own and designate it as an encore. in which you'd give a requirement (ex. tier 4-5 song only).

That way, only the members of that band would need to have that song and we'd be better able to plan out the whole competition.

Then they suck. :) Everyone playing Rock Band should have at least half of the DLC.

The problem I foresee with this idea (and my original version of the new rules) is that it may take people several days to select a common song, and by that time their window of opportunity to play together may be lost.

See, I love this idea, BUT not all songs were created equal. For example, even a shitty attempt at "Green Grass" will net you far more points than an awesome "Say it Ain't So" run. And I wouldn't want a band to win just because they were spamming the harder songs every week.

... but then again, maybe that's okay. If I limited the tiers of the songs that they might be allowed to select, it would at least help limit this points disparity, and I suppose add to the drama by inserting a bit of risk/reward and "American Idol" to each band's selections.

Considering how difficult the last BotRBB proved scheduling to be, the last thing I want to do in implement an overly complex system that would require a bunch of coordination and communication that would prohibit some of the more casual players from participating on a regular basis.

If we don't wanna make people pay for songs they don't want, this sounds like the best idea so far...

Along those AI-type lines, it rewards you for taking that risk if you can do it, but it can also help if your group is struggling in another song that week. "Say It Ain't So" is a lowered-tiered song, so if a group wants to "phone it in" and pick it on a week they're doing great, then it's fine. On the flip side of that, maybe they know they didn't do so hot on a run of "Green Grass" and wanna try to make up the point difference.

Have full bands go ahead and compile this information now. I've checked with Charron so far and we've got 29 common songs. Once I hear back from radjago, I can post a list of the DLC that Intense Flavor has, and if we see what the other band has, it shouldn't take too long to say "Hey, our song for this week is Working Man" or something like that.

I helped put together a Rock Band competition last month that I judged for. However, everything was local, which made things rather easy as far as that goes. We were also judging on performance, and had a few people pull off some rather awesome stage moves. That's out of the question for this thing though, as a lot of us probably don't have a dedicated cameraman laying around.

Perhaps let each band choose a DLC song of approved tier to replace their lowest score of the week. Tier would be = or lower then current weeks highest tier. Perhaps = to the tier of the song being replaced. This would make DLC not needed, but gives an option to for those who may be struggling/ or want to do a different song. You could make it a DLC/Bonus song for those who still want an option to swap, but dont want to be assed to dl more songs.

I don't think it would be that hard for two bands to communicate and pick out a custom song that they'll battle on. I do like the idea of being able to pick our own song here and there.

All that one has to do is list their DLC and see what their opponents have in common.

Actually, plaidtopia, you should just have all organized bands list their DLC, and add that to the OP under their name. I think that would make things simple.

And, of course, if one band has trouble communicating and getting this all sorted out, then they can just fall back on to disc sings, or opt out of using DLC.

That said, I just want to warn you guys that the Dragon Ryders are going to rock impossibly hard, so you all better be ready. :)

Regarding song selection and DLC, I think the best way to go about it would be to go by tiers each week. 1st week is tiers 1-2, 2nd is 3-4, 3rd is 5-6, 4th is 7-8. Each week plaidtopia picks one song, everyone votes for the second song, and the third song is chosen between the two bands facing each other each week. The first and second songs are from the regular and bonus songs, and the third can be regular, bonus, or DLC. Choosing the third song is the tricky part. We can't have bands directly competing when they're not playing the same songs, so choosing to substitute a song won't fly. Maybe we could extend it to four songs, with each band choosing a song.

I just finished seeing what common songs the members of One More Day had, and while we've all got quite a few songs, I gotta say I'm a bit surprised to say the only common songs we all have are the Metallica Pack and "Still Alive" (which I'm counting anyway since it's free... Baker doesn't have it :lol ). There are a few cases where all but one member had a certain song, but if it's like this for the rest of the bands we might not have a choice but to pick our own DLC song each week.

Intense Flavor DLC
Stuff we all have
Bang Camaro - Rock Rebellion
Black Tide - Shockwave
Bowie, David - Heroes
Bowie, David - Moonage Daydream
Bowie, David - Queen Bitch
Coheed and Cambria - Teen Speed (Of God's Blood and Burial)
Count Zero - Shake
Creedance Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son
Freezepop - Sprode
GLaDOS - Still Alive
The Knack - My Sharona
Motley Crue - Saints of Los Angeles
Paramore - Crushcrushcrush
Radiohead - My Iron Lung
Stone Temple Pilots - Interstate Love Song
Weezer - Buddy Holly

Stuff 3 of us have The fourth person has agreed to purchase any song from this list if need be
All-American Rejects - Dirty Little Secret
All-American Rejects - Move Along
The Black Crowes - Hard to Handle
Black Sabbath - N.I.B.
The Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen in Love
The Clash - I Fought the Law
Lynrd Skynrd - Simple Man
Metallica - ...And Justice for All
The Monkees - Last Train to Clarksville
Oasis - Wonderwall
The Police - Can't Stand Losing You
The Police - Message in a Bottle
The Police - Roxanne
The Police - Synchronicity II
Queens of the Stone Age - 3's & 7's
The Ramones - Rockaway Beach
Rush - Working Man
Smashing Pumpkins - Siva
Stone Temple Pilots - Sex Type Thing

Also, have we finalized how songs are going to be chosen? I know plaid is picking one (off the disc or Still Alive), and then we each pick one from the given tiers. If all bands (those already together and those plaid is forming tonight) can get their DLC information together for tomorrow, then I see things running smoothly. Just my two cents.

Also, are the weeks running Friday-Friday? And what are the time deadlines for the bands picking their songs? I won't be home tomorrow until the evening. And what happens if a band doesn't pick their song before the deadline? Maybe plaid can have a couple songs off the disc picked in case this happens.

example:
Band A doesn't pick a song: Creep
Band B doesn't pick a song: Ballroom Blitz

That way, only the band that didn't choose gets the "random" song, and the other actually gets to play their choice.

I'll join up if someone is looking for a guitarist or bassist...I'm not very good with the drums yet.

I am a 5-star medium guitarist and a 3-star hard guitar.

Bass probably a 4-star hard.

xbox 360, available after 8PM est typically or most of the day on the weekends

DLC that Dragon Ryders have, for reference:

Metallica pack
fortunate son
gimme three steps
limelight
the number of the beast
Oasis pack
Siva
The perfect drug
Grateful Dead pack
Thrash pack
Boston pack
Still alive

I'd probably be down for getting new songs if needed, so if any band competing with us really wants a specific DLC song, just ask.

Hey Jesiatha, Prince of Space, and Stabby -

You guys want to try and do this thing? My time problem is this: Week 1 of the competition I'm only available to play through Saturday morning, and I wont be available again until Saturday afternoon of week 2. Can we make that work?

I'll also play for any band who needs a backup or can work with that schedule.

TaKeRx

If any band needs a guitarist/bassist. let me know. I play expert and I do pretty good on it. I play play on the 360 (GT: STi xTaKeR) I reside in NJ so It's easter time here..

- Every Friday, I will announce three songs, along with the band matchups. One song will be marked as required for both bands to play, while two will be marked as reserves.

- Competing bands will have until Monday to select two other songs -- retail disc or DLC songs can both be included -- that they will both play.

- If bands are unable to communicate or can't agree on the two shared songs by Monday, they will instead default to playing the two reserved songs originally posted by me on Friday.

- Bands will then have a full week (until the next Monday) to play their three songs and submit scores via PM'ed screenshots to me.

In short: Bands who can communicate play one required song and two shared songs. Bands who can't play three required songs.

To facilitate this process, I will need all bands to post a list of their shared DLC, which I will then link to from the OP.

Thanks for all the ideas, guys. I'm not entirely happy with this system, but I think it's our best option. For one, it accounts for any possible problems with communication between bands, but it also allows for a DLC and a little "American Idol"-type song selection.
