Game Boy Micro: New GBA Revision

Rule #1 about consumer electronics: The smaller it is, the more expensive it is. You're a fool if you think you're going to be paying less than $50 for this thing. Don't be stunned if it comes out for something like $80 or more.

I want one because it would be the perfect compliment for my Play-Yan, and because I don't have a GBA other than my DS and miss the GBA multiplayer stuff. However, I don't want to pay anything more than $60 for it.

Speaking of the Play-Yan, Nintendo would be foolish not to release it along side the Micro. It would turn it into an MP3 player around the size of the iPod mini, and even though SD cards aren't near the capacities of the iPod microdrives, iPods can't play video, so you would gain that despite the lack of space.

From what I've heard from the people I've talked to, the size of the screen isn't a problem at all. The resolution is there, and games look awesome on it because the pixels are packed much tighter together. No one there had troubles reading text, either.

So remember kiddies, just like you say to your girlfriends, it's not the size that counts, but how you use it.

Hey I just found this thread now.

I wont vouch for the validity of this, but I was talking to pretty high ranking reporter in the press room during E3 over lunch, and we were just chatting (pretty good conversation, actually) and he let some things slip casually that maybe he shouldnt have, but one thing that stands out that didn't seem he wanted to say (he made a face after he said it) was that this thing was going to sell like hotcakes when it launches for $49.99...

He had just came back from an interview with Kaplan, so I don't know if he was just speculating or he let that slip, but he seemed to know pretty well what he was talking about.

Yeah, if Nintendo made this thing a teeny bit bigger by adding an SD slot, added MP3/MP4 support and sold it for $60-80, it would absolutely just fly off shelves. I know I'd buy one.

What I don't understand is why they announced it when it's not going to launch for months. They're effectively killing a chunk of GBA sales until it launches. They could have at least given us a price and a release date. It's always cool when at an Apple keynote Jobs announces "and it will be in stores next week."

There is no reason why it should be more than 49.99 other than Nintendo's ability to command a higher price.

The components are dirt cheap - an ARM7 @ 16 MHz + a cellphone screen + a couple of connectors + 256K RAM.

Just think about it - N-Gage QD is 99.99 with ARM9 @ 100 MHz + similar screen + GSM dual band radio + bluetooth + headphones + 16 MB RAM + 4 MB flash memory.

Deal breakers for me...

- No GBC/GB compatibility
- No GC link capability

I take it we still don't know the status on either? Also, how does the SP's screen compare?

.

+ access to Hundreds of Qulaity games only Nintendo can provide.
Its more of a right to play cost than anything else

Also N-Gage needs a phone contract??

Thing is, if you throw in an MP3 player you up the price and make it bigger... which defeats the point of the thing. And unless it's going to sport dedicated buttons for the MP3 player, it'll probably be a half-assed one.

At which point everyone will say something like "fuck Nintendo, if you only ditched the MP3 player and dropped the price accordingly I'd buy it..."

Yep, the access to lots of GBA games is what can warrant a price premium if anything. What I'm was trying to say was tech wise anything above 49.99 is a terrible rip-off. But that has happened before and a position Nintendo has earned with its library, some might argue.

No contract needed http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/256596.asp

If Game Boy Micro is $50, I'm getting it. Too many good games are coming out for it that I haven't played like FE8, Minish Cap, and all that other stuff. Plus get on past classics and will be supported for a couple of more years so why not?

Just to play Devi;s Advocate, Nokia is alos selling it at $99 because they got their collective asses kicked in terms of sales. God, the Nokia booth was depressing and hillarious at E3.

And if Nintendo bundles it with a revised Play Yan for $80? How killer would that be? Movies, music all on an sd card and all played through a minuscule device. Smallest video player ever?

And Remedy :-P

Well I was trying to say that the thing should be 49.99, using a Nokia device as an example. And at 49.99 it's a fantastic value because of the huge library.

really? dealbreaker over those concerns?

where can you find GBC/GB games anymore? I hardly think its major - with coloured/gba iterations of games, there isn't much impetus to buy older carts (which are rare) and if you already own stuff, then you should have a GBAorSP... :/

GC link? ... does anyone care? I mean, if you need to link up, there's like less than 10 games?...

I'm pretty certain that it will be link compatible. There's a GBA-link port on a dongle cable orf some sort, so you ought to be able to use the link with that. If it doesn't support it then yes, totally no sale for me either. One of the main reasons I want it is to get more GBAs for Four Swords. :)

Wow. Play-Yan rocks. And it's made by Nintendo (lik-sang says it's normally only available at Nintendo's Japanese site)? Why isn't it available in the U.S.?!?!?!

It was suppossed to be at E3? Did anypne see it? :/

As for pricing, I bet the Micro comes in at $79.99. Nintendo could probably charge $39.99 and still make a huge profit though... if they went under $50 for this thing I think it'd outsell all other platforms combined this fall/winter.

Wouldn't it be funny if he actually was from Finland? I mean, what are the odds of that? hahah...hah... :/

Anyway...the Remedy pimping makes up for the Nokia pimping, so I don't mind. :P

Saw a GameBoy Micro today, must say it's pretty sexy. Then again I'm already Nintendo's GameBoy Bitch. :lol

Wasn't a big fan of the new style shoulder buttons though...

So this thing won't have an adaptor for GC connectivity? What do you guys think a new SP will drop to once the micro is released? I don't see it going much lower....but connectivity is making me was a GBA. I'm still pissed that DS doesn't have connectivity.

He got banned? :lol

But seriously, how did everyone else feel about the shoulder buttons? They irked me.

The small form factor was fine for my small Asian hands though. :)

Whats this E3 you speak of? Is it like some kind of game store?

..but seriously, if this is just E3 talk...why was this thread revived; was it just for the video?

We've got impressions and a short video of the Micro in action here.

I was sceptical about it, but after playing with it, I am pretty impressed.

The Micro is growing on me (hur hur), but the fact that they shrunk the already small GBA screen even more really irks me. They go through the trouble of making a much sharper screen with true backlighting...and they go and shrink it. Oh well, I'm sure I'll be buying this come the day of its release.

It'd be great if the thing supported being able to print out your own faceplates and place them under a clear cover or something similar.

Keep waiting, cause the chances of that happening are pretty slim for a while.
Yeah. I don't see a DS redesign until late 2006 at the absolute earliest.

PSP stalling somewhat probably means we won't get the next "real" Game Boy until even later too.

It will probably exist within the next year since Nintendo keep re-designing and re-selling us their shit each year and a half. It's now a rock solid trend for them.

And i was not serious either. I don't like this way of doing business. I am still 100% sure they could have managed to give us the SP right at first. The Gameboy color could have come freakin earlier too and prolly at the same price tag.
But you know, it's all about making money. They deliberately not lit the screen of the first GBA so it becomes a strong incentive for the SP (wich is also looking alleluia better).

EDIT: What's even more sad is that i'm buying a DS this friday 'cause there's at least 4 new games coming that i want to play and the DS is gonna cost me 100$ Can (pre-owned + employee discount + store credit) ;)

It probably "exists" now... we just won't see it on shelves until Nomber 2006 most likely. :P

Just look at GBA...

Game Boy Advance~ June 2001
Game Boy Advance SP~ March 2003
Game Boy Micro~ Fall 2005

Nintendo DS~ November 2004
Nintendo DS SP~ ???

...Nintendo's on a bi-annual schedule for the handheld redesigns. I bet it's unveiled at E3 2006 with a fall release that year. Then in mid/late 2007 we'll get "Game Boy Evolution" or whatever.

you'd probably have to wait until at least early next year for any new handheld announcement, anytime sooner would jeopardize their holiday DS or GBA sales, I just wonder what would be their next handheld announcement be, a new GB or a redesigned DS?

DS redesign. If PSP was doing better we'd probably get the new GB sooner though.

"a couple of months" it's a manner of speaking you know. I mean, i'm sure Nintendo will come up with a re-design soon. As soon as "sometimes in 2006" maybe.
But i don't really care actually. I don't know what are the advantages of an NDS-SP beside begin smaller and looking better. The screens are nice, controls are good, etc.

Control for games that use the thumb strap would be a lot better if the DS wasn't so wide. There's no way I'll be able to play Hunters for hours on end like I have with every other Metroid game ever made. Too much with the stretchy.

Plus a smaller DS would be nice just because right now it's a little too big to put in your pocket comfortably.
