OP, you knew that a lot of people in this thread were going to completely dismiss you and probably not even read what you wrote.

But you are 100% percent correct and I hope that much gives you peace of mind.

GoT is a trashy, tawdry soap. It is a fun show (sometimes) but it is pure junk food.

Well those are your opinions. But I will say that just because the show doesn't fit into the little perfect box you want it to fit into it does not make it a "poorly-written problematic piece of shit". The show is not without problems but it's far from what you are trying to make it out to be.

I've never read the books but I have seen every episode and I can assure you that it is a poorly-written problematic piece of shit.

Of course, I will continue watching but I do so as a guilty pleasure.

Can we talk about how Ellaria Sand and the Sand Snakes were allowed to murder Doran Martell and his son and nobody in Dorne gave a shit? In a world where, "the kinslayer is accursed in the eyes of Gods and men."

I love the books and hate the TV show so much I couldn't get all the way through S2. So I'm sympathetic to OP here, even if I wasn't aware of much of what he's talking about.

It's not bad at all. There are some really entertaining episodes(throughout, nevermind your downhill slope), the weekly discussion is fun, and the directing and production values have made for some of the best scenes on television. Last of all is something I anticipate is going to sting: the way characters arcs have played out in the macro in the later seasons have been, for the most part, better than the last books. The bloat is real and the pace that made the books such page turners is not the same.

Now, it's not a particular favorite of mine and I've never bothered re-watching any of it, but I enjoy Game of Thrones.

I wish I also had the privilege to watch such superb and quality shows that make Game of Thrones really really bad. You don't need to type an essay to say the books are better, everyone knows that. But when your criticism starts with it being bad because it isn't the book gives the rest of your post no credibility. Game of Thrones is better than 95% of TV in the last 6 years.

I mean I'm a major game of Thrones fan, both book and tv show, but you really should separate the two lol. Also having flawed characters is a good thing? I'm not really sure why you felt so compelled to write this up. We know for a fact that the characterization in the show is bad, and yes there has been some changes, but making Cersei more likeable is not a bad change. I can go probably go through all of your points and say why you are wrong, but that would just be a waste of my time.

Nah. Its got its issues which I hoped to read/discuss but when the OP claims Tyrion was planning on raping Sansa...troll post

He's not really saying that, he's saying the shows characterizations are horrible and inconsistent, especially when compared to the books.

See, I don't mind the show making Cercei more likeable but it shows how inconsistent they are. They want her to be more likeable but they also want her to do some of the terrible acts she does in the books, these two notions don't really mesh so we get a really inconsistent character. One who can show sympathy to Tyrion in one scene and then try and murder him in the next.

So are the books. I don't think the OP is arguing that one or the other is high art, or if he is it's an even poorer argument.

She is twelve. Don't give me that "in Westeros that doesn't count!" shit, she's still fucking twelve years old.

it's sad how far the show has fallen since the first season

i can still enjoy the sets, costumes, acting and spectacle

but the writing is very inconsistent and often dumb as fuck
Pretty much how I feel. Comparing S6 dialogue for characters like Varys, Littlefinger and Tyrion to early pre-S4 dialogue is where it's most apparent.

Found the show boring, I need more than "ANYONE CAN DIE!!!" to keep me interested in a story because it's then a case of why bother watching and being invested in a character if anyone can die?

Also find it funny when people say it's a masterpiece or whatever. Seeing it compared to The Wire or The Sopranos lol. It's nerdy ass Comicon shit like Marvel films. Be honest about it!

Now we're going to have to disagree. Statutory rape doesn't exist in Westeros nor did it really exist in the Middle Ages. Sansa has "bled" that makes her a woman grown and flowered and thus ready to be married off and making babies. Jon Snow was 16 when he was getting it on with Ygritte. Cercei was 16 when she married Robert.

Yes, you are right. A gross and terrible series, but with all the -isms its no wonder people like it in this day and age when a man like Trump can become president.

Welcome to TV adaptation?

Yet still the best show on tv.

Nothing more powerful than Jon Snow realizing he is about to die but won't go down with out a fight.

You'll never get this exact moment from a book

Right, those weirdos that quote the books at length and have made debating plot lines a hobby aside, it's always been entertainment. When the books are at their best it's like completely immersing in a GTA game for 5 hours at a time. Each chapter is that perfect bite size morsel that piques your interest and you just have to keep reading the next one.

Disappointed OP did not go into more detail into Stannis' portrayal on the show which I felt was a watered down, one dimensional version of an extremely badass character. GoT Stannis suuuuucks.

Agree about everything else...though. Ye gods, Euron, what happened there? And whoever wrote Talisa's character needs to be relegated to penning nothing but Disney movies for the rest of their career.

I havent read the books so after reading your post I kinda agree that it seems like a bad adaptation, however, calling it just bad is kinda click bait. However, I do think that the show is over rated and has turned into something really predictable in the later seasons, it still is worth it for the spectacle alone but it is far from being the masterpiece some claim it to be.

But did you see the Battle of the Bastards battle scene? And the Hardhome episode?

wow lad

welll as I said, those episodes were interesting by the spectacle alone, but they were really predictable, and its been a shame because at the beginning the show felt more like some kind or roulette that had me wondering was the fuck was going to happen next, or at least that was how it felt for me

*Claims a show is batshit terrible.*

*Has watched every episode of six seasons of the show.*

Yeah.... your opinion is garbage.

Westeros Jetpack Joyride

Every character has a jetpack and Westeros exists in a warp that distorts time. This is the only explanation I can think of for the timeline. Yara goes from the Iron Islands to the Dreadfort in less than a season, even though this would require sailing around the entire continent, but Gilly's baby is still a baby and Myrcella has been in Dorne for years! Littlefinger is a most industrious teleporter, zipping from the Eyrie to Moat Cailin to Mole's Town in a matter of days, apparently. Sansa and Jon's walking tour of the North takes months, presumably, but Cersei's trial is "in a few days". And Jaime got all the way from Dorne to King's Landing, but Doran has only just received news of Myrcella's death? This attempt at a coherent timeline makes for fun reading.

While I did enjoy the show at first, this is what got me all the time. People tell me "don't think about it" but I can't help it. First I thought there were multiple timelines but even then it doesn't make any sense, how do characters move so fast from one place to another. Thanks for the link btw!

I dropped the show after season 5. Felt like there was too much gore, nudity and violence just for the sake of it and kinda tired of the story in general. Didn't read the books though.

Which was actually a common age for girls (at least peasants) to marry in the middle ages.

It does make me uncomfortable to read though.

I generally agree (but didn't read everything in detail cos I'm still avoiding season 6)

I watched season 1 and enjoyed it
I watched season 2 and enjoyed it
I read the books and enjoyed them (a lot at parts)
I watched season 3 and noticed a couple of problems
I watched season 4 and started worrying
I watched season 5
I did not watch season 6

It's still got amazing production values but it's got serious issues in the story telling department, but they're hard to explain.

I suggest everyone watch that MrBTongue video on his views of GOT

I'm confused how you take issue with both the problematic elements of the series as well as them toning a bunch of it down at least in respect to tyrion.

That is not to say you don't have points, because you do, some which I agree with. But those two particular issues register as contridictory to me. Maybe I am missing some nuance.

Hodor, really?

Yes, the reason for his disability is dumb, but it still is a disability. There's nothing anti-disability or discriminatory about it, imo.

theyre not even the same medium, why should anyone care what happened in the books? From what ive seen it doesnt require much for people to let everyone know "but the books are better!"

Yeah.... your opinion is garbage.

How does that invalidate someone's opinion? I watch Arrow but I don't pretend it's good show anymore, I watch it because I've got nothing else to watch and can mostly tolerate its garbage parts.

Because it's like they're afraid to write a problematic disabled character meaning that Tyrion is whitewashed and thus all (especially the female characters) must warp to accommodate his perfection.

What kind of dragons did they have in the middle ages?

Battle of the bastards, that Tommin kid taking a header, Hodor. That's quality entertainment.

No it's really great. Seasons 1 and 2 are a bit slow and dragged down by having to do a ton of world/character-building, but seasons 3/4/6 are up there among the best TV produced.
