Lol, yeah that's pretty obvious. Haven't really liked this season so far because of it. The pacing is just all over the place. Even more so in some episodes.

The bigger problem I had with Ben showing up was the abrupt reminder that no one in the Wight Stalkers war party thought to bring a horse.
You've got a pair of bloody knights and the King in the North and not a one of you remembers that horses exist and are very useful to ride?

I honestly don't even want to speculate on why the Bran = NK theory is magically becoming popular, considering the only clue this season people have are shoulder pads.

I mean, I do think the writing has gotten worse, I wouldn't disagree there, but I think it's clear why most people watch this show and why it is so popular. At this point are we even sure that fire works on the true white walkers?
The only things we've seen actually kill them are V steel and dragon glass. He didn't seem all that bothered by the dragons being in his vicinity.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think fire is that much of a thread for the White Walkers. Only the Wights get's recked by it.

He had to hold the Wights back, otherwise they would have been able to catch up to the fleeing horse riding at full gallop, somehow.

Haven't seen any boobs this season at all. Maybe there was a quick shot of Cersei? Even that was a body double I think. Maybe this is the real problem with this season after all. People want their tits and dragons, but all they've been getting is extra servings of dragon.

I really enjoyed the episode. It was pulpy as hell but the banter was quality and the climax satisfying. The ice spear throw was a nice deliberate extension of the failed ballista to highlight the overwhelming superiority of the Night King's army. I can forgive the teleporting and narrative contrivances because I really don't think they can wrap up so many arcs without doing so. The only major grievance I had was the Winterfell stuff. Maisie WIlliam's performance as sociopath Arya is awful when she's given too much tacky dialogue to run with.
That and the overall safeness of it all. As noted several times already, the series is basically BioWare presents Game of Thrones at this point, ticking literally every predictable narrative beat you could expect with a nice shroud of plot armour on all the favourites. I don't mind because it's super entertaining, but if this were two or three seasons ago an episode like this would have had significant fatalities. It's definitely playing it safe.

The theory is that Bran somehow becomes the Night King through the same sort of spirit-swapping, time-travel shenanigans that made it possible for him to cause Hodor to become Hodor-y in the past through events in the present.
The main support for this theory is that people really want them to be doing something with Bran to excuse why they're portraying him as such a useless twatting asshole, and "He's actually the big baddie" is about the only explanation that will suffice for what a ginormous cunt he's been by this point.

But isnt the children of the forest who turned a man into night king already dead? In Brans vision he saw someone turned into night king, and apparently thats supposed to be him in future based on the theory.
I thought it was definitely the strongest episode of this season, especially compared to last week's. But Bran's absence is becoming frustrating. For a guy that sees everything and can control animals, you'd think he'd give Jon or Dany some help. Or for that matter, at least resolve issues around Winterfell. What is he doing that's so important he let the Night King obtain a dragon?

I'd say the writing has always served as a great backbone to the wow moments. When the spectacle was over we could always rely on some really great dialogue and writing in the quieter moments to even out the pacing. In other words, the spectacle was great but the quieter moments were equally as good for different reasons.
This season things just seem a little off. Maybe it's the sped up season which in turn leads to a sped up sense of pacing and story (which I totally get even if I don't like it) which also leads to random leaps in logic or consistency so things can actually happen instead of spending time setting up what needs to happen, which I think the older seasons did much more of. We still get some wonderful scenes with characters though, don't get me wrong.
I still enjoy it but there is a lot more convenience at play in the plot this season so things can fall into place for the last season. Characters also appear to have just sped up their arcs and now act different than where we left them off last season. I know Arya and Bran for example would likely end up where they are now anyway but it happened so fast that it's a bit jarring.
Probably the same reason that weird ice dragon theory became so popular. -_-
I thought I posted my theories (and I've dodged known spoilers) but I think my post got eaten.
As far as the pacing - I don't think the pacing of previous seasons would work anymore now that the various character arcs have all converged.

Arya is the Waif levels of dumb. Tyrion secret Targerian dumb. Bran is every Bran in history dumb. I will be so glad when the series is done just so I don't have to see these bad fanfics anymore. Every surprise that has popped up was set up earlier on in the series. Most of these fan theories exist because.......reasons.

I've got no idea how making self-fulfilling time travel paradox loops via warging works, and I honestly don't want to think about it much because that's the sort of thing that you could write an entire body of work about and still leave massive gaping plotholes, and in GoT it's honestly more or less a throwaway singular plot-point to give Hodor a rad origin story.
I generally prefer the much simpler theory, which is that Bran is and always has been the worst character on the show by far, and the show writers have just lost patience with anyone not realizing it and intend to make it impossible to ignore moving forward.
That or maybe they're just going to Poochie him.

This argument would make a lot more sense if Ben hadn't rode in on a bloody horse, and Jon hadn't ridden all the way back to the Wall on the bloody horse.

I just don't like the fact that regular swords and dragonglass can kill wights now, when it was well established before in the show the only way to kill a wight is through fire.
But the group didn't know exactly where the WWs were or what kind of terrain they'd have to cover to find them.
Most of those ironically happened in season 4-7. Its pretty disingenuous to say that the show has not changed mostly for the worse since seasons 1-3.
Game of Thrones has always had great spectacle but it was always supported by good writing and consistent internal logic. These things have been absent for quite a while and it shows. Now it seems that only spectacle is the thing that seems to have gotten better as time went on.
I don't know why, but Karl posting always gets me.

You can park a horse if you need to. Admittedly it gets really expensive with the rates in King's Landing, but otherwise it's generally going to be well worth the amount of provisions the horse can carry.
I mean, if you go back to the first season and watch the rangers venturing out beyond the Wall, you see a lot of horses. Ben probably had a horse out there for a reason.
