Here's my hot take on Season 6 overall:
- Episode 1 was the worst opening episode ever, and one of the low points of the show in terms of getting anyone excited for a new season. Along with how poorly Season 5 went and how it ended, it really lowered expectations across the board.
- Episodes 2 to 4 were pretty standard Game of Thrones episodes, but better than the lows of Season 5, so they were entertaining but not particularly gripping.
- Episode 5 rejuvenated the show in a fantastic way. Not only did it blow certain plotlines wide open, but it finally felt like the show was moving with strong momentum again, and things were happening.
- Episodes 6 and 7 continued this momentum and were very entertaining episodes with some great shots. Episode 7 in particular has some of the best establishing vistas the show has ever had. It highlighted the variety of locations across the world, and great they can look when the show wanted to showcase that point.
- Episode 8 was a huge misstep which felt like tripping and falling on your face after finally getting into a groove during a marathon. It hurts, bad.
- Episodes 9 and 10 redeemed any misstep way and beyond. The best consecutive two hours of Game of Thrones ever produced, with fantastic events, direction, music, cinematography, and ushers the series into a true new era, emphasizing that this second part of the story after the Red Wedding, is well and truly over.
- Overall one of the best seasons of the show, and definitely the best one since the series dedicated itself to a pulpier but more honest and direct take on fantasy since Season 4. I never felt the show was that great at trying to be a more serious and grounded fantasy series like it tried to be in the first few seasons, but once they embraced the big action and pulpy villains, it got much better. Season 6 is the pinnacle of that direction they started to head in, and is all the better for it.
