A man who climbed the ranks through talent instead of position.

Why does that matter? He most definitely had the talent to rise, why do you think he became a Kingsguard at the age of 16 (or something).

This is from either the BR set or HBO's site, I can't remember:
IIRC Valyria (and I'm guessing much of Essos) got trashed by some worldwide event that changed the entire planet's temperature/seasons. The Targaryen and their dragons moved to Westeros after that.

I think this was on the Season 2 Bluray regarding Valyria:
Valyria got ruined by some sort of disaster (the Doom). The Targaryens, the only surviving noble family, survived because they flew West, to Dragonstone, before the Doom. The surviving families/slaves/rest of civilization etc. spread across Essos and became the Nine Free Cities.

It's weird, having only read two of the books Tywin in the HBO series is largely my favorite character. I was kind of hoping he would
apprentice Arya
a bit more (since he is disappointed in his own kids).

The fact that Locke knows about Cersei and Jaime really bothers me. It really shows how superficially the writers are treating the source material.

It doesn't, it's more like an observation of his life. He's been pampered through his entire life, so his current predicament is kind of shocking to him. Now even more so.

Tywin is all boss. I've only read the first book, so I mostly know him from the show, but I absolutely love the character. Charles Dance is such a regal bastard.

IIRC it spread as a rumour at the start of the war. Remember the allegations at King's Landing during S2? If that's a deviation, it doesn't bother me at all.

He was a great swordman, but that doesn't mean he was a great soldier.

Fake edit: Although now I remember that he cut a good number of Northmen before he was captured by Robb's men.

Jaime's been fighting in wars since he was 14 or something and was holding his own against the best knights around at that time. Make no mistake, he was one of the best around; his cockiness came not just from his family's power, but his absolute confidence that no one could best him in combat.

All of Westeros knows about the allegations that Jaime and Cersei are Joffrey's parents.

The only questions is whether people believe it to be true, or believe to be merely wartime propaganda by Stannis to conveniently give himself the legitimate claim to the throne.

:(

I like this thread better, since the other thread is nothing but book comparisons. This is better for actual show discussion.

I can see that and if you aren't breaking the rules established by the OP then fine. But it's annoying when honey badgers don't care.

Especially those that are dropping hints and acting like you haven't read the books. You know who you are.

If you look at the description of Valyria on the HBO map, (spoiler simply since it's on the HBO website but not been discussed in the actual series as far as I can remember)
it says "the ancient city was destroyed centuries ago," so presumably it's nothing but a ruin.

Yeah, I'm sure it's mostly ruins, but there's probably someone living there. And she could probably find some cool old relics and history shit.

I dunno, it just seems odd to me that she claims this really great ancestry and yells about Old Valyria every time someone asks, but she wouldn't hop over and see how old Valyria actually is for a bit.

Well just act like the books don't exist in here an no one will care.

This episode was amazing, didn't expect it to escalate this quickly.

The place has probably been sacked so many times there's only rubble. Also, crossing the desert for funsies doesn't seem like a very smart enterprise at this moment.

Last season, Stannis did send letters to everyone in the seven kingdoms spreading what had been found.
Yup. It's like modern-day gossip. Saying "Joffrey is Robert's Son" is like saying "*insert pop star here* is in the hospital for exhaustion." Some will buy it, some won't.

Hey, just dropping by to say that Daenerys is the most badass character in the series so far.

Also the dude from Misfits can't not be a creeper?

I'm glad Arya explained why she didn't like the Hound.

I had honestly forgetton about that after season 2, so I was confused about why she wanted him dead when she was chanting the names in season 2. Completely forgot about the butcher boy.

Not sacked. The Viewers Guide says that it was destroyed by the Doom. And Quaithe (the masked chick) was painting tattoos on some sailor in S2 as a safeguard against sailing near it.

Goddamn, I was really starting to like the Brotherhood without Banners, then it turns out they're Lord of Light loonies. :( I really don't like Melisandre, her voice just grates. Whether they know about her or not doesn't matter, she's connected and she's just a crazy fanatic.

And a question, Littlefinger is going to the Eyrie (was that the place). Is that the same place where Catelyn's weird sister lives? The breastfeeding lady? I think it is, but I haven't watched season 1 since it aired and couldn't remember her name. :S

You are correct about the Eyrie. Also, I totally agree with you about the brotherhood. Thoros is awesome but when Beric came out and sounded a little nutty I was like "aww maaaaaan"

Uh-huh. I audibly groaned. I thought they'd be all badass, not serving anyone, but bam! 'We serve the Lord of Light'. Fuck off with that bullshit. :(

Beric is eyepatch man, right? He's obviously crazy as he thinks he is going to win against the Hound. He will rip him in two. The stuff he did last season while protecting Sansa was awesome!

Just another thought: If Sansa had gone with the Hound, she'd be with Arya now. The god's seemingly hate her. :L

Why did no-one think to kill/subdue Craster before? Granted in the past they needed his outpost for their trips beyond the wall, but now the Walkers are on the move and the world has gone to hell, why put up with his shit?

Well, that's interesting. I thought scavengers would go there and pull whatever they could find under the ruins. I hope we get to see the rests of the city, that's the kind of wild stuff I loved from Lost.

PREVIEW SPOILERS:
He sets his sword on fire. I sense fun times for the Hound...

I still don't remember.

It was in like episode 2-3 in the first season. Arya is play fighting with this kid (butcher's boy) and then Joffery comes and starts being his usual awful self. Then Arya's wolf bites him and the kid runs away.

The Hound went to catch him but he kept running so the Hound just ran him over and killed him.

Ah right, now i remember.
I thought for some reason it was something happened at King's Landing, so i wasn't coming up with anything.

My current prediction is that she'll lose most of her army in short order, then be forced to find a new plan. Again. Dragons breathe fire, and the zombie-like enemies (not sure if walkers or something else) seem vulnerable to fire, so Dany is basically a hard-counter to the threat from the North. I suppose it's possible that she and her dragons will die before being able to get used in this fashion, but I've been predicting a Dragon v White Walker showdown since Season 1.

Yeah I see this as the end game too, the Dragon girl is there to take on the main threat, White Walkers, the way they limit them, one episode per season, saving them. All this other shit is just one big wait for the big fight that will be Daenerys Dragonborn plus what ever kingdoms are left against the White Walkers. Totally like Lord of the rings style coming together to unite against a common enemy.

Prophecie that was mentioned:-
"The Prince That Was Promised",[1] also known as the Son of Fire and Warrior of Light,[2] is a mythic figure in the religion of the Lord of Light. According to prophecy, the Prince That Was Promised would be reborn "amidst salt and smoke"[3] and pull a flaming sword from the flames, Lightbringer, to combat the coming darkness.[4]

Lady Melisandre, priestess of the Lord of Light, Stannis Baratheon is the prophesied Prince but really it has to be the Dragon girl, all Daenerys has left to do is pull some sword out of flames which she can do as she has fire proof hands and she pretty much meets all the requirements.

I don't understand the reason behind why that guy hoodwinked Theon. Did his initial plan backfire so he had to bring him back or is he just a sick fuck?

I think is a combination of that he wants some kind of reward for bringing Theon back and that he looks kind of sick.

I felt bad for Theon, but mostly because now I don't think he would have an opportunity to redeem himself.

That reminds me... Arya's dire wolf is still around somewhere...

So much hostility towards book readers :( Some of us just like reading this thread because it's way more fun to see people discussing about what's going to happen than reading "omg they merged two unimportant characters into a main one! how do they dare!!!?" over and over.

Not all of us who read this thread are like "Hey guys, you know, I have a feeling Ned Stark is gonna die. And call me crazy but I think Daenerys is going to burn that witch and bring dragons back to the world. Also how crazy would it be if Renly got killed by a witch working under his previously unseen brother?"

PREVIEW TALK:
Fuck, I watched the preview and just didn't put two and two together. Hopefully he'll take some of the loonies down before his fear gets him again.

Preview doesn't bode well for Brienne either. One of my favourite characters and she nearly gets raped last episode and she taking back to the Bolton (and presumably Robb) in the next. :(

Is Sansa hair just really bright this season? Looks like someone set fire to her head in some scenes. It may just be the lighting but I thought it was more auburn.

Also, I can't wait to find out what Margaery's and that guy who freed and rekidnapped Theon's agenda is. I genuinely thought he was being freed.

Thanks for "calling out" my spontaneously happy reaction that I wanted to share, pal. I didn't say anything about the books. Obviously I would never discuss any plot stuff in this thread.

well, half the fun of these threads is trying to figure out who is a book reader!

And finally... Khaleesi! What a wonderful scene. I knew this was coming from a mile away, but they still pulled it with high marks. Emilia owned the shit out of her character. Also, I didn't expect the slave trader to speak in Valyrian. I thought that just be another language that Dany could have learned during her long exhile, but it ended up being even better. Drakaris, motherfuckers.

I know it's a no book spoilers thread, but as it's hardly a spoiler, I seem to recall that people like Kraznys talk a variation of Valyrian in the book. Think of it as an Eastern dialect. Daenerys, on the other hand, speaks High Valyrian. If you listen carefully to the way they both speak, there are some differences between Dany and Kraznys. When Dany gives orders (using an imperative form, I suppose), her sentences always end in "-das". Kraznys never once speaks like this in any episode. Obviously I can't guarantee that I'm right, and it would be surprising to know that the showrunners went as far as creating not only a language, but one dialect of said language as well.

... What can I say, Daenerys sounds so badass when she speaks Valyrian that it got me interested in the language :p.

Fellow book reader here. I would probably be hostile as well based on some of the spoilers I've seen "accidentally" posted in here.

It's because book readers, whether they mean to or not, drop subtle hints about upcoming material.

You guys sometimes can't help yourselves. Once you have that general guideline of events it's hard not to lead people on. If someone says something entirely wrong in terms of the course of events of the source material, the book reader may think that dropping a hint or pointing something out is beneficial, but it's not. A lot of the fun in watching shows and posting in these threads comes from making observations and predictions, and being proven right or wrong over time. Analyzing the material as it goes on.

This thread is for people who either haven't read the book, or people who are willing to completely separate themselves from the book and go in blind, like they would with any TV show where the source material isn't known. It's "book spoilers" vs. "no book spoilers" in terms of the threads but it's more like "book comparison thread" vs. "show-only." The problem is, even in the "show-only" thread you'll have book readers come in and offer their informed opinion, which can sway the conversation towards spoiler and hint territory and no one really wants that.

It's not all of you, obviously. But, the reason for the split threads, and the reason for show-only peoples' discontent, are easy to understand at this point.
