4.4 million viewers achieved at the premiere, 6.7 million for the Sunday night!

'Game of Thrones' season 3 premiere ratings break records

The third season premiere delivered 4.4 million viewers for its premiere at 9 p.m. and racked up 6.7 million viewers for the evening after its two repeats were tallied. That’s up 13 percent from its first airing last year and represents a record for the show in both measurements.

Despite heavy publicity and a rabid fan base, odds were stacked against Thrones setting a record. TV viewership historically dips on Easter Sunday, and Thrones ran head-to-head for the first time with the heavily anticipated The Walking Dead finale, which has a demographically similar male-skewing audience.

How do those ratings compare to True Blood's ratings? Isn't that HBO's other highly rated show? Are any other current HBO shows close in the ratings?

So Barriston Selmy served in the King's guard for both Targaryan and Baratheon?

Also I may have missed it but do they explain why the Mountain left Harranhall?

Probably because Robbs army would have absolutely slaughtered him and it apparently holds no strategic value.

But it was also said last season that Harrenhall could not be sieged by ground forces, so it's still rather perplexing.

Ha, a thread for show with no spoilers, show with spoilers in spoiler tags, and the books. Getting a little ridiculous and kinda makes spoiler tags redundant but whatever.

My bad.

In the books [...]

No. No book talk whatsoever, there's another thread for you.

and I read the second thing w/o thinking and of course it's a spoiler. You can guess it maybe from the way the scene plays, but it's important for how this person will handle this "transaction" I would think... If they changed it for the show, then they probably want to turn it into a little reveal/twist for the audience.

No, they don't. Everybody at Winterfell is Scattered and/or dead. All the Ravens were killed, so there's no way to tell Robb what's happening. Everybody that could offer any kind of help is away with Robb on the army.

Something that I feel I can never quite grasp is where people are in the world and how long have they travelled. Robb, for instance, just arrived at Harrenhall, which is near the Island between the place "Riverrun" is written and King's Landing on the map posted on the thread earlier. He's really far away from Winterfell or the North overall.

Theon was knocked unconscious by the Pyke men that were under his command (but not really), bagged and took along when the Pyke men left Winterfell.

We don't know what happened after that.

Is finding Jon Snow a stated priority by the young Starks & company? I can't remember.

I'm afraid to read this thread in case someone accidentally drops spoilers, or worse, provides "speculation" that curiously comes close to what actually happens later. I thought it was a good premiere though, not spectacular, but I know they need to set the pieces in the first few episodes.

Lil Lords? The Old Caretaker (which name I forgot) that died told them to go to the North Wall and Jon Snow would protect them until Rob came back.

Except there's nobody in the North Wall. The Night Watch is going back to it, but not Jon Snow.

So, while Rob took the entire north to King's Landing to battle the Lannisters and whoever is allied with them, Daenerys is coming from the East with Dragons and a mercenary army of the best 8000 Soldiers in the world and both Wildlings and White Walkers are marching south for the wall.

Shit's really going bad.

We know that the army of that bastard son of one of Robb's men was supposed to take Winterfell back. If they were the ones slaughtering the Winterfell people / made some kind of deal with the Pyke men, it would make sense why they haven't informed Robb yet...

"You had one job - to send the ravens - and you fucked that up!"

Poor Sam.
How was he supposed to send ravens? Where were the ravens? Where was the camp?
Couldn't he have just looked at Lord Commander and said "Sorry, boss. There were 3283692 white walkers all over the damn place and I was afraid if I moved I'd be skewered/beaten/dismembered. My bad."

I can't follow rules and posted book spoilers.
There is a thread for book spoilers but this one definitely is not it.

Please adjust your post accordingly. :)

SPOILER RULES:

- ABSOLUTELY NO BOOK SPOILERS. It doesn't matter if they're under spoiler tags, they should not be in this thread. Use the other thread for book-related television discussion. This includes alluding to things, subtle hinting, comparing the books to the show, etc...

- Regular TV thread rules apply:
  • Once something airs in the US on the East Coast, it's fair game. Feel free to discuss anything that has aired without using spoiler tags.
  • Anything that hasn't aired yet should be spoiler tagged including information from HBO previews, loglines, trailers, interviews, and a few other places.
  • Speculation from people that haven't read the books is fine and encouraged.

Guess who is coming.
I'm almost certain Sophie Turner isn't 18 yet ... just saying.

Age of consent in Canada is 16 so I'm legally allowed to be attracted to her. :p

They should have cast Sophie Turner as Brienne. She's gonna be seven feet tall by next season.

Anyway. Team Targaryen has started rolling. I really don't see how anyone else is gonna be able to handle Dany in a straight fight. The deck is so stacked in her favor in terms of potential that I kinda feel Martin is setting up a misdirection with her. So I see two outcomes. She ends up stabbed in the back. Or she says "Screw Westeros" and conquers the East instead.

She's slowly building a reputation. She was the Queen of the Dothraki and she has a couple of Dothrakis that know she's "the" Dragon. She (not really, but.. you know) leveled Qarth. I wonder what is going to happen in this new slave city she arrived now. So it would be pretty cool if she, somehow, united all the cities.

I doubt it'll happen, as they're known as the "free cities". What will probably happen is that Daenerys will come and save Westeros from the beyond-the-wall menace, destroy the Lannisters and the Starks will fight them at first but then respect and maybe even join them later.

I don't know about that. Robert rebelled against the mad king and Ned Stark was right there with him. She'll probably have special hatred for the Lannisters since Jaime killed her father (grandfather?).

Ned is not around anymore. Most of the hatred toward the Stormborns came from Robert anyway - Ned said he wouldn't agree with killing an innocent child, as he described Daenerys. Rob shares the hatred for the Lannisters and the White Walkers are a bigger threat that anybody can even imagine (as everybody think they're a fairy tale). Also, the Mad King had that name for a reason - he was quite mad. She doesn't look crazy. Her brother (which was quite crazy), for instance, wouldn't have any of the moral questions she has. She just wants what is hers by right. And Rob said that he didn't want to be king, he just wanted her sisters back and to punish the people that killed his father. Who better to gain the throne once everything is sand and done, if not the one that has the right to be in it?

Also, it's really convenient for Daenerys that the only way you can kill White Walkers is with fire. :D

did we ever get a follow-up of that supernatural beast that attacked the Stark (or maybe it was Lannister) soldiers at night in one of the season 2 episodes?

Just a small clarification, Daenerys is the only Stormborn because
she was literally born in a storm on a ship to Pentos.
I only spoilered that because I can't remember if it was mentioned in the show or if it was just what my girlfriend told me who has read the first book. It's nothing major.

After I wrote it I wondered if that's the case. However, since she's the only one alive, I didn't bother to change it. :D

That was Grey Wind, Robb's wolf. The northern army was attacking Lannister men. They skipped the actual battle but did show Robb and some of his men right after they had showed Grey Wind.

Why do they sometimes call her Daenarys Stormborn of the house Targaeryan? Xaro however says, Daenarys Targaeryan first of your name. What's her correct last name?

And the talk on the army size. Sure in a strictly ground war, the battle favors the larger numbers. For example, Renly had over 100k soldiers.

I think Tywin mentioned the Starks have 20,000 men. Now we've seen the type of men they are. Some are rapists, killers, farmers whatever.

He's pretty much got control of the North with that many numbers. Now of course the Targaeryans must have some loyalists still. People who've forgotten the mad king but hate Joffrey and the lannisters.

If Daenarys sets foot on Westeros now, she'll probably be slaughtered. But if she sets foot on Westeros with 8000 men who don't know compassion, don't know pain, don't know fear or weakness. Shed be utterly unstoppable. Especially with 3 large dragons that will burn any castle in a second.

I'm pretty sure that was Rob's direwolf that attacked the Lannisters.

yeah, I guess that's the most likely explanation. I can't really remember the details of that scene, but I don't think they ever showed it. Did it look wolf-like?

That was Grey Wind, Robb's wolf. The northern army was attacking Lannister men. They skipped the actual battle but did show Robb and some of his men right after they had showed Grey Wind.

ah, alright thanks

Check my post above, Stormborn is a nickname, like how people call Jamie "Kingslayer".

Well Jorah hated Ned as well, but I'm not sure if his hate would extend to the rest of the family.

I doubt Dany would be happy to give up some of her land to the new King of the North though, but I can't see her being proud of herself if she witnesses some of the terror that new army would cause.

I think there are no limits to how stubborn these men of Westeros can be.

I don't see Robb bending the knee to Dany so easily. Starks have history with the Targaeryans, they killed Neds sister. Also can you imagine how upset the banner men would be if Robb so easily gave up the North? These guys don't care whether Robb is king or not, they care that the North is their own and not some Kings/Queens who sits on the throne god knows how far away who has absolutely no idea of whats happening in the North.

I never meant that they would give up the North. I meant the exact opposite: They wouldn't show anything against Daenerys, as long as she didn't take the north from them.

As in, Rob doesn't want to be a king. As long as she doesn't bother them, and behaves properly as a queen, it doesn't matter, specially since Ned is no longer in the picture.

If Daenerys wants to rule the seven kingdoms with an iron fist and bend everybody to her will, she'll most likely be confronted by the Starks and the entire North.

I don't think she's that kind of Queen.

Dany seems pretty close to Cersai in ruthlessness. She's VERY arrogant and still a bit naive.

Very good ep. Pacing is much better than S2 so far. There is no need to cram all the characters into one ep (No Bran or Arya for example. To be fair the book started out this way as well).

Minimal exposition and understandable cuts (quick Selmy reveal). I liked it...

This is interesting. I've been wondering what Dany's role in this whole thing is going to be this entire time.

I mean, with that army of mercs she's probably going to buy, plus her dragons, she's probably going to be pretty deadly when the time comes. But who else will fight with her? I feel like the Six kingdoms (Robb is doing his own thing) could work up strong enough defense just by sheer numbers. From what I understand, most, if not all of Stannis' bannermen surrendered to the Tyrell/Lannister host that "saved" Kings Landing.

Speaking of Stannis, what's HIS role in all of this? He doesn't have an army anymore either. Is Melsandre gonna fart out more shadow killers for him?

With Dany coming to Westeros, plus the Wildling Army, plus the White Walkers, it appears that things are building up to something really explosive.

I can't even deal with it. I'm trying not to go into complete withdraw and it's only been one episode. It's like a drug. I WANT MORE.
