You're fucking joking right?
Dragons, demon scorpions, pregnant fire witch that gives birth to shadow demon, dire wolves, frozen zombies, frozen ice people, teleporting mages, and a nipple getting cut off
is suspending your disbelief?

Wat

And how much more I would've liked this show if none of that stuff was in it. The writing, intrigue and drama is so good on its own that it doesn't need the fantasy elements at all.

Oh well, still watching although it's getting a bit silly.

You went into it knowing that it was a fantasy show though, it's not like all of this sprung out of nowhere.

The whole point of the slaver cutting off that Unsullied's nipple is to show that his army will not balk at anything, they will not flinch at pain and will do whatever their master says. He meant it to offend Dany a bit and to prove his dominance over his army of slaves "A dramatic sell" if you will.

It may have looked cool on paper but on screen it was just comical. I mean, come on.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
Saying that someone being under the legal age of consent makes their attractiveness "better" implies things. I'm not saying it's wrong to say she's attractive, obviously her age has nothing to do with that, but to say that it makes her "better" could mean all sorts of messed up things.

I guess the more appropriate response would be, "Why in the world does that make it better?"

Age of consent it not 18 everywhere. It's 16 in Canada, for example. Exception being if that person is under your authority such as a student/teacher.

The way he was disrespecting Dany in his language... damn.

I was hoping that Jorah knew the language the whole time and was going to hit him with some kinda zinger there at some point, but no. :p

So my wife and I decided to watch some of the features on the Season 1 and Season 2 blu-rays. Very interesting backstory stuff that helps understanding this show a lot better. I also love how they get various actors to cover their (or their family's) history.
Good stuff and I can't believe I've just sat on it for so long without watching it.

I really enjoyed this episode. It was nicely paced too. They gave some good space for all the segments.

Thats not a friend, that's a frenemy.

Anyway, it's game of thrones, so there is probably 80-90% any of the characters you hate will die at some point in the story.*

*I haven't read any of the books.

Not as a real shock to anyone but I just saw via a friend that Game of Thrones has been renewed for season 4.

I wonder if HBO is going to extend it to more than ten episodes.

It kinda feels watching multiple short clips crammed into almost an hour whenever an episode airs.

Fat chance?

Why dont they release an EE version on DVD/BD. I'm sure they must have extra scenes and longer edits, etc.

The showrunners have said they can only produce 10 episodes a year. If they were to increase the episode count, we would have a longer wait between seasons.

Reading some of the posts from earlier, RE: 8000 slave soldiers.

Having such a disciplined and skilled set of soldiers would be a boon, but it is only as good as the general who leads them. Not sure who is going to lead Dany's army. Using the battlefield to your advantage is key for most battles that are just a huge brawl between two sides.

Look at some of the wins Hannibal had against the Romans.

The most effective soldiers from that period were usually horse archers. Hannibal had the Numidian cavalry and the Mongols under Genghis Khan were possibly the most effective solders ever. Not sure if these slave soldiers can ride.

I'll probably read the books once the show slows down (if that's even possible). I just feel, I got introduced to the world of it through the show, and that's what I'll enjoy primarily. I don't doubt for a second the books aren't superior, but it'll completely change the way I view what's happening.
Same here. I really love the show and don't want to turn into someone who watches every week but bitches about how it's not the same as the book. I don't know if that's normal for the GoT spoiler thread, but I just want to continue loving the show.
There are a lot of plot lines to follow now. Sunday's episode was ridiculous. Every character only got a few minutes of screen time. As the cast gets larger I don't know how the showrunners are going to handle this. The first season was pretty tight but the second season added a lot more characters and I know a lot of people complained about that. But this is just getting ridiculous now. I think it's going to hurt the story telling.

I see this thought a lot and never understand it. Maybe because I grew up watching soap operas with my mom and grandmother but following a lot of plots in one show has never been a problem for me. I love having lots of characters doing different things as long as the show handles it well. It's all about the writing to me, not the numbers. This show seems to do it very well.

horse archers, heavy armored cavalry and/or a strong infantry block (such as the slave soldier) + longbowmen

I read the books and still love the show, most people I know who read the books are the same. It's mostly hardcore book fans that hate the changes they make for TV.

But enough book talk, this thread is about pretending they don't exist. :)

PM me if you want the background info on Unsullied and horse archery. It doesn't spoil anything, other than maybe a throwaway line whether the Unsullied ride. For generals, Dany just picked up the ex Lord Knight Commander of the Kingsguard and probably the biggest badass in Westeros.

The Unsullied also has a famous backstory/tale if you know what I was referring to

I'm reading through Game of Thrones right now, and none of the stories seem any different. Minor differences sure, but that's only because a novel can take its time world and character building, the show doesn't have that same luxury. I haven't seen the first season since it aired, but reading through the book brings up the familiar scenes in my head.

Is there any place I can check out the differences between the first book and the first season without spoiling future events?

good fighter =/= good battlefield tactician. Then again, if Robb can do it, so can anyone

Robb had a lot of guys to take advice from though, guys who were probably around during the last war.

I might just keep that offer for a few episodes to see if they thrown it in the series.

Yeah I was thinking about them, neither has shown the kind of tactical leadership that I'd want in a great general, although I'm sure they would both manage okay. Maybe Dany will step up herself and be a natural.

The first book and season are quite similar. Ned has a fever dream after his run-in with jaime, but that's about it. The second season diverges a lot more.

I don't want to get into too much of a book discussion becuase this is not the place but if you read ACOK and watch season 2 some of the differences really stick out.

That was a pretty stupid thing for your friend to do. Did he or she eventually understand what it was such a shitty thing to do to you?

Well, the episode recaps at westeros.org/GoT/episodes each have a section called "Book to Screen" which do exactly that. It's kind of set up the opposite way of what you're looking for (it goes scene by scene and says what chapter it's from, if applicable), but it's basically what you want. You might try the first few episodes and only continue when you're pretty certain you've passed that area in the book.

I wouldn't risk looking at the ASOIAF sites or Wikipedia. The biggest differences occur towards the end of Game Of Thrones. In fact you'll wind up seeing stuff that will first appear in this current season of the show.

edit: I suppose that Westeros book-to-TV site could work actually. Be careful though.

There has been a no book spoilers thread since season 1.
I wasn't even registered on NeoGaf after season 2 was over. I didn't know there was no book spoiler thread. I only saw GoT Spoiler Thread coming up top of Off Topic Discussion so I assumed it was only GoT thread.

So how could she afford all those slave soldiers?

All that bling that she stole from Quarth?

ibyne7Or1jBmJY.gif

I assumed that she took a lot of gold from Qarth since all the leaders were dead.

They looted but it doesn't seem like they made enough considering they were quite unhappy about the empty safe.
Though yeah, realistically they should have the wealth of all the leaders, which just has to be a lot?

But I'm expecting her to just take the army w/o paying. Slave seller is an asshole anyway so maybe she can perform some "miracle" ("free" the slaves/show dragons) to simply convince the soldiers to fight for her cause. Can totally see them making a point by letting one-nipple-guy kill the slave seller instead of obeying him again :p

Robb had a lot of guys to take advice from though, guys who were probably around during the last war.

He was also raised by Ned, who was a leader in Robert's Rebillion and the Greyjoy Rebellion, so it's pretty safe to assume Ned was a good tactician. (and Ned mentioned his father was good as well, stating that he "never knew him to be wrong about matters of combat".)

Yeah. In that "Anatomy of a scene" video HBO made they said that the language these people speak is part Valyrian. So even if she missed some details I guess Dany sort of understood what he was saying. Assuming she speaks Valyrian. So the guy isn't gonna have a good outcome.

The line is ridiculous but anyone who's in the area should still go. Last day is tomorrow!

I expected her to turn to someone and say something that showed she could understand him.

I would bang a hot farmer!
Just because someone hasn't read the books doesn't mean they shouldn't read the rules.

SPOILER RULES:

- Regular TV thread rules apply:
  • Once something airs in the US on the East Coast, it's fair game. Feel free to discuss anything that has aired without using spoiler tags.
  • Anything that hasn't aired yet should be spoiler tagged including information from HBO previews, loglines, trailers, interviews, and a few other places.
  • Speculation from people that haven't read the books is fine and encouraged.

Went to the Toronto one back last month. House Greyjoy ftw. Probably still the only person in the world to pick that versus that huge Stark/Lannister/Targ split though.
