Game of Thrones - Season 2 - George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire - Sundays on HBO

Yeah those were really good. Alik Sakharov directed that episode (used to be a DP for episode 1, 2, 9, 10 on season 1. Tim Van Patten and Alan Taylor's episodes). I thought he did a good job, would like to see him return. As someone that's obsessed with cinematography, I usually like directors that come from a background in cinematography.

Yeah, Sakharov's episode this past season had some very nice moments- Theon burning the letter, Theon's baptism and then the scene with Tyrion setting up his plan to out the mole. Tyrion's scene in particular was a great example of how to properly adapt a scene from the books taking advantage of TV as a medium while keeping to the feel of the books.

Random stuff from today:

- io9: George W. Bush’s decapitated head appeared on Game of Thrones
- THR: 'Game of Thrones' Designer Michelle Clapton's Secret Source for Wildling Bones: eBay
- Westeros.org: Reviewing Season 2, Part 1 (youtube)
Now that season 2 is a wrap, Linda and I have put together a long, two-part video covering each section of the story in rough, geographic area (very rough in some cases), and have discussed what we liked and disliked, what the differences in our reactions were from season to season, or hopes for the next season, and more.

Just like Rome and Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Game of Thrones is well-known for its bare breasts and sex. In each episode there is at least one nude or semi-naked woman yet the male characters are rarely seen unclothed. Does Tena think there is a disparity in the nudity ratio between men and women?

‘There’s that in everything in the world. I think it’s really unfair, every actor, any actress has had her tits out. Every single actress I know. Blokes it’s like, let’s see some cock. Do you know what I mean? Let’s make it more even.’

Tena tells me that she has read all of the books – ‘they’re absolutely amazing’. She goes on to comment: ‘I’m really terrified that he’s not going to write the last one for ages. I’m just terrified. I can’t wait that long. I need it now in my life. But now I think the pressure might be on.’

Yaaaar. She's cool.

oh please, if that was obamas head we'd already have a 30 page thread on it
And my response is still the same. It's a background prop, that shows the side of a head, that's never mentioned or referenced in a fantasy story that is nowhere near related to real life.

If you have a problem with this, you need to chill the fuck out.

Both using his head, and drawing attention to it, are very stupid decisions, but ultimately it is not particularly offensive. People just like to get upset about stuff.

Someone posted it on Reddit. It got a lot of upvotes and ended up on the front page. Then Gawker picked it up and, next thing you know, the mainstream media is going nuts over it.

Let's get up in arms about recycled props but be okay with softcore porn and ridiculous violence...mainstream media is silly.

I'll let George R. R. Martin answer that -

How do you make decisions about the depictions of sexual violence that you include in your writing?

Well, I'm not writing about contemporary sex—it's medieval.

There's a more general question here that doesn't just affect sex or rape, and that's this whole issue of what is gratuitous? What should be depicted? I have gotten letters over the years from readers who don't like the sex, they say it's "gratuitous." I think that word gets thrown around and what it seems to mean is "I didn't like it." This person didn't want to read it, so it's gratuitous to that person. And if I'm guilty of having gratuitous sex, then I'm also guilty of having gratuitous violence, and gratuitous feasting, and gratuitous description of clothes, and gratuitous heraldry, because very little of this is necessary to advance the plot. But my philosophy is that plot advancement is not what the experience of reading fiction is about. If all we care about is advancing the plot, why read novels? We can just read Cliffs Notes.

A novel for me is an immersive experience where I feel as if I have lived it and that I've tasted the food and experienced the sex and experienced the terror of battle. So I want all of the detail, all of the sensory things—whether it's a good experience, or a bad experience, I want to put the reader through it. To that mind, detail is necessary, showing not telling is necessary, and nothing is gratuitous.

There are so many great supporting actors on other dramas that Alfie Allen getting a nomination would be a travesty. I'm sure Dinklage will get a nom again, but he sure as shit doesn't deserve another win.

I wasn't stating my noms in context of the whole field, just some ones of the nominees I really liked. I doubt that Allen will get a nomination, I think Dinklage is a shoe-in though, and a strong contender to win again.

ASOS is being split across two seasons. So season 3 will cover roughly the first half of ASOS.

Right. Well, I have the 2-book version (of snow and steel and the other one, I forgot) so that's going to be a fairly small season if the book size is indication.

Any news on how they're going to do season 3? Do both books in 1 season? A season per book 3-x?

I believe it's one season for part one, and one for part two. So seasons' three & four will be both book three.

The seasons' will still be ten episodes each, it just means there's less filler content (hello ACoK) and they can focus more on the details and sticking to the books.

To add, just because the book was split where it was in some countries doesn't mean that's where the split will be in the two seasons.

Is season four scheduled for 2014?

Christ, it's going to be a long wait And even then, the show might probably be over before the release of book seven :/

I'll admit that I will be surprised if HBO keep the series going to encompass the entire seven book series (that's if GRRM even decides to stick to seven books).

The bonus, is that GRRM is kinda semi-forced to finish the series in a reasonable time frame rather than spending another five years on book six.
