Liam Cunningham's portrayal of Davos is so delightful. I'll go even farther and say he's improving the character somewhat. There's a bit of humor with him where Davos is a bit somber in the books.

As for the sex scenes, I think half of them make sense. It's HBO, they like to push the envelope and I'm a man: I like to see sex. I want to see the sex scenes in the book. *shrugs* And the ones with my favorite characters that are only hinted at in the book - Melisandre come to mind. Like, really comes to mind.

The ones with Ros are the only ones I'm not happy with, because they add nothing. Even if her character is replacing another character, she's not a big enough character to deserve a major scene in every single episode. If there is some added lore with her in a later season, like maybe she's the living avatar of the Old Gods or something, then I'll understand why she's here. And then I'll stop watching.

Oh, I agree. I think most of the sex scenes serve a purpose. Even if they don't advance the plot, they add to the characterization. Even the scene with Ros in this episode, I think they're just hammering to us how much of a dick Littlefinger is. It just seems like it's all everybody talks about.

Definitely. I already liked Davos but Liam adds a little extra something that makes him even more like-able.

I loved this part. Great Davos face.

haha holy shit, I never noticed Davos' face.

I hate that they combined his sons though. This kid is basically the combination of his scholarly, pious son and a hardcore badass son. And somehow that created "droopy eyed, cowardly religious zealot" son.

This, all the way. We all loved Davos because he is honorable, but making him less bleak has improved the character greatly.

Yeah, it's a bit weird. It's like people have forgotten what book series this is based on. The book has a sex scene or some reference to "fucking" or "cunts" or "my cock in ______" or random rapings every other chapter. Plus, we're all mostly guys and guys like sex. Most of us were weaned on late night softcore porn on Skinemax. What's the fucking issue? haha

Oh and I didn't mention this probably because I had seen it already but that scene between Varys and Tyrion was great. Conleth Hill nails that part so perfectly. Are there any interviews of him talking about his character?

I think the GAfers living with their parents have the biggest problem. I've never had an issue with the sex in the series.

The sex scenes aren't an issue for me personally but I would like to watch with family and friends without having to worry about some over the top and unnecessary sex scene. Aside from that I just think it limits the audience for the show, fantasies can bring in a lot of different viewers with different sensitivities and I want this franchise to have has big an audience as possible.

I have to agree. I wasn't sold on him. I thought he looked a bit too young and dressed too drably. I pictured him much more flamboyant. But sometime during a rewatch of season 1 and my re-read of the entire series, I fell for his Varys portrayel.

V is one of my favorite characters and there isn't anyone else who could have done the role as perfectly. And like Varys, I've never seen an interview with the actor: I think he wants to keep his secrets close to him.

Honestly seems to be the issue. People seem uncomfortable, so I'm assuming they're watching the show with other people.

I keep picturing a mom or some girl they're trying to impress or some "bros" hanging around and going "is this what you read late at night when you go to sleep?".

Wait...what?

Edit: OH, Mathos. I thought you were talking about someone else.

I watch it with my wife and keep hoping it makes her excited. ;)

But as for a bigger audience, you're barking up the wrong tree with that one. This is HBO. It's not going to be PG13 for the masses.

Agreed, I already liked Davos in the books but Cunningham adds another layer of awesome.

I hate that they've removed some of the shades of grey from Littlefinger. It's not interesting when he straight up sells a girl to be dismembered, tortured, and murdered and then threatens another with the same for crying. Whorehouses were just an investment in the books anyway; he was smarter, more complicated, and bigger than just running one really extravagant whorehouse.

I don't really think the sex scenes in tonight's episode really served a purpose besides to hit the prerequisite TNA quota on HBO/pay cable. It feels forced or tacked on in a bad way.

In fairness,
despite the evils he does, Theon's story is really one big fucking joke. He can't keep anything together. He's probably the least lucky person in the entire kingdom.

I'm ~200 pages into A Storm Of Swords and I would disagree.
There is nothing unlucky about Theon just acting like a selfish self-entitled asshole. He brought every bit of what happened to him on himself.

It's true. But in fairness, some of the worst characters have all the luck in this series.

He's still hard to read. That in itself makes him a somewhat grey character. It's hard to tell what his motives are.

Yeah but they make DVDs and will eventually sell the episodes to other channels.

Complaints about nudity and sex, at this point, are fruitless. It's HBO and they will definitely stay. Enjoy your softcore pornography and enjoy it in abundance.

Yeah I thought it was a bit excessive, but they did serve a purpose, i think (lol). I can understand Melisandre's 'tasteful' scene and its literal Love on the Battlefield thing, but the boat scene used to show Theons ego/douchery was over the top. I was like "Oh they're just gonna keep going with this" then I lol'd.

Why. Why is this show so good.

Teh Sex.

I can understand the discomfort with some of the sex scenes. I remember watching A History of Violence with my dad and that was pretty awkward.....but you just have to get over it. It's just sex. And I doubt HBO is trying to get this broad, family audience. They are in the position they are in because they push the boundaries, not because they try to go for the CBS crowd...and the sex and violence didn't stop them from syndicating Entourage and Sopranos.

Was Jon Snow sharpening his sword made of valyrian steel?

I'm no expert on blades so unless using the stone serves other purposes other than sharpening then it looks like a small plot hole.

None of the wiki articles about Valyrian Steel mentioned they never need to be sharpened. Just that they're 'sharper'. I can't recall if they explicitly say otherwise in the books. So it might be nothing at all.

Polishing/cleaning.

I know if I had such a sword I'd keep that shit pristine. Don't really care if it doesn't rust/need sharpening, it's a matter of pride in basically the best thing any warrior in Westeros could wield.

Not much different than washing your car even if it doesn't need to be clean and shiny.

There is no way the sex scenes being back-to-back wasn't intentionally played for laughs, right? It was hilarious. It's like they're directly responding to people by saying "you don't like it? Well here's some more assholes." At least the Mel/Stannis scene plays well and feels like it actually fits.

I love what they're doing with Yoren and co on the Kingsroad and the Iron Islands so far, but man, every time Littlefinger shows up this season I want to change the channel. I wasn't the biggest fan of the show version of him in s1 but it's gotten much, much worse now. At least Cercei is improving.

The Arya and Gendry scene was cute overload. Very well done.

The Melisandre sex isn't in the book, but implied. Thank you HBO for giving us naked Melisandre. *bow*

Next week preview spoiler
The actress playing Margaery is my second conflicted actress choice after Cersei. I hope she impresses.

I have a question about season 1. Didn't Cersei get it on with the Knight of the Flowers? Wasn't there a scene where she was reading something, and then KotF comes up behind her and she says, "go back to bed." This is really never brought up again.

That was her cousin, Lancel Lannister (the squire King Robert made fun of earlier in the season as he filled his cup with wine)

That was Lancel, her cousin. Not Loras.

Nope. I could see the argument for the brothel, which they're clearly trying to use to add some extra exposition for Littlefinger and represent some of the commoner's feelings about the royalty in KL.

Theon's was in the book and HBO probably figured, "hey, a freebie." Explains saltwives, sets up Theon's womanizing traits and plays off well with how he's kind of an ass. Also helps transition to him putting moves on his sister in a natural way. (What a weird sentence to write...)

The Melisandre one is (season spoilers)
great for explanation/foreshadowing for what happens later in the season though
.

I wouldn't condemn all of the sex scenes as being TNA quota-fillers.

I though the exact same thing the first time I watched it, and I thought: "WHOA. Now THAT is straying from the books!" Then I realized it was her cousin instead. Made a lot more sense.

Sex happens. Most of it in this episode were in the book.

I liked the episode, very curious to see how Stannis is going to approach Renly.

CoK
Stannis still has to approach Renly, having both Cat and Stannis show up in the same epi to then have the brothers feud and THEN for renly to die would seem like a lot to pack in. Especially if they are going to start showing off brienne. I fully expect my sun ans stars to die in episode 4.

Did they are will they cast Olenna for this season? I don't think I remember anyone mentioning her for this season.
