Game of Thrones Season 8 |OT| A Song of Icy and Fiery Fandom

I was worried I was gonna be asking this when all the dust settled yet here I am:

So what was the point?

Night King lured into a trap and ambush knifed, insta dead. Army of the Dead gone like that

Dany goes full heel and is no better than any of the rest. Mother of, breaker of, all bullshit. Just another asshole.

What was the point?
The point of it was to make her become the main villain in the end. There was alot of foreshadowing it throughout the series, alltough it wasn't certain on where her path will lead to, her fate was clouded, till now.

better than last episode. the leaks on /tv/ were correct.

also, i think this makes sense why danaerys did it.

1. look at season 1, when her brother was killed - her reaction.
2. the lannister's want peace ? no, no peace. fire and blood.

Darkness no more
The episode was entertaining to watch even though a lot of it felt stupid. Dany burning the whole city did not feel like it fit the character. I know they have been hinting at that happening throughout the series, but everything changed so quick with her.

Last week a dragon dies in 5 seconds and this week a dragon burns the entire city, fleet and army with no problem.

Meanwhile at Gamespot they’ll be mad because the show again failed to fulfill one of the many, ridiculous internet theories. I’m glad this show is how it is, I love seeing everyone get butt hurt.

Is the white horse a callback to something I don’t remember? I felt like when Arya saw it there was something I was supposed be interpreting that I didn’t get

Kate saw a black horse in the island.

Arya a white horse in King's landing.

Everything happens for a reason.

It felt a little safe and predictable but the episode was certainly filled with spectacle. Some of the battle scenes were pretty intense and I'm glad we actually got to see King's Landing burn to the ground. There was also a lot of fan service.

That being said I can understand why people wouldn't enjoy it. This felt like "Game of Thrones the Movie". A big Hollywood spectacle filled with cliché and cheese.

Rhaegal was much smaller, slower and also very injured from last battle.

Nah, it was straight up bullshit. They had a 100% hit rate on Rhaegal including a kill shot. AT SEA. HIDING BEHIND A GIANT ROCK.

This week was an accurate representation of what those things would actually be like in combat against a dragon. In other words, pretty much useless apart from landing a lucky shot.

I mean.....I don't want to defend her for burning innocents but...from up there in the sky all the people on the bottom just look like small ants, I bet she just kinda lost every inhibition. She doesn't care anylonger. She's the mad queen.

She gave up the idea of the iron throne, probably go back across the narrow sea if she can get away.

Tonight on Inside the Derpisode...

Benioff: "We've always wanted to see these two face off again, and they finally did. It struck us that it would be kind of...apocalyptically beautiful, to see them fighting on this stairway to nowhere, with the sky in the background, and the dragon flying by, and the flames everywhere."

Weiss: "We knew that these two were going to die together, at each other's hands, and we knew that the Hound's death had to be a death by fire. So the one thing stronger than the Hound's fear of fire is the hatred for the man who put the fear of fire there in the first place."

Paint by numbers characterization.

I enjoyed the blood lust honestly

I now see Dany and Greyworm's actions as a reflection of how much of the audience (myself included) has felt the last 3 episodes.

Getting to the end, the endgame, the final of the long journey to only find that it wasn't satisfying at all.

Watching the piss poor defense of Winterfell. The "Character kind of forgot" things. Removal or complete walk back of characters we spent years investing in. The obvious plot armor.

Whats left when all that happens and only Michael Bay remains??? Rage!!!

And for Dany and Greyworm... it's also rage.

Well we have to take in mind that last weeks episode was directed by David Nutter and not the guy who did The Long Night and This Episode so maybe thats why. OFc D&D wrote it but I dunno how much influence they have by actually shooting it in the way DN did.

A ridiculous series of events precluded by completely outta left field character changes. Felt so dumb and undeserved. This will go down as an epic way of failing to satisfy anyone.

It was a sight to behold though, production value has been fantastic across the board. Just wish the writing could have kept up with the A game of the rest of the team.

I bet George RR Martin is glad the show outpaced his books as now he knows what NOT to do.

Let's listen to The Rains of Castamere one last time for we lost Jaime and Cersei Lannister...

Odds aren't looking good that Tyrion will survive this...

For me personally:

Heel Dany disappoints me. I don’t truly get why that was necessary and I probably never will, but I can live with it

Cersei and Jaime getting killed by rubble, that bugs me. Let Cersei take a dragonfire bath, let Jaime do something glorious, I dunno

So is last episode gonna be about how everyone who once loved Dany, outside of her armies, now hate her?

Sorry to disapoint you but the book will have the same main storyline as in the movie

GRRM already outlined and foreshadowed everything to D&D including Arya killing NK since couple years ago

If you hate the show you gota blame GRRM too

Season 4 Dany: "I better lock my dragons up because I don't want them to kill any goat herders kids anymore."

Season 8 Dany: "Fuck them dumb ass kids. And they Momma's."

Did they though? It was one of those scenes were they could easily pull a "oh look, they escaped in the dingy". Kind of like how Arya kept "dying" but in the end just kept getting a dust bath.

I really enjoyed this episode, and I don't think they jumped the shark with any character motivations. It was close, Tyrions plan was dumb, but, family and all that. Still felt a bit rushed but we are basically getting film length episodes now. Some of the characters could have had better deaths that's for sure, but none were bad.

Looking forward to it being over and done with next week... then a period of reflection!

I just took it as the most obvious reference - a Biblical symbol of death, i.e. Arya is coming for Dany.

As for the episode, I think the fact that I've abandoned all hopes and expectations after "The Long Night" episode and was able to just turn my brain off helped me enjoy it more than I would have otherwise. Considering that it's all so far beyond repair at this point, I didn't think it was too bad.

I thought this episode was decent within context of the corner they painted themselves into. Though the Harpoon-stealth-armor the Dragon was wearing is fucking lol levels of stupid. Harpoons literally everywhere, on all ships all around the castles posts. Shows like 3 harpoons in total fired at her and dodged. What a joke. They could've avoided this entirely had they not done the dumbshit pointless insta-kill last ep, and had the dragon die this ep fighting ships or castles. In fact, could've provided literal motivation for her to feel like she should just burn the place down with her one remaining dragon. Imagine if bells were ringing, she pauses to contemplate peace, then one guy harpoons her other dragon out of the sky. Such an easy goddamn solution for motivation.

Qyburns death was the best death this season.

I bet if Arya does kill the NK, it's not mid-book, and it's not "leap onto secret trampoline at him while he's surrounded by his generals" level of stupid.

Also the NK is barely in the books. He's a legend mentioned twice, and already killed long ago according to that legend. And he was a human. And made sacrifices to the Others, but in no way controlled or led them. But, sure, the books will play out just like the show.

I never liked Dany. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. She needs to die and will next episode. She is not a leader and is a spoiled brat that wants her throne. Then a little adversity comes her way and she snaps like the weak character she is.

The whole time when Johns men are letting their murderous side go I kept playing the arewethebaddiesnow.gif in my head.

Something just struck me....Arya is the song about FIRE and ICE, because she is going to kill BOTH of them.
aria
noun
  • a long accompanied song for a solo voice, typically one in an opera or oratorio.

Close enough!

I'm still mulling over everything. It looks like the leaked plot points are true at least, though no one really knows how it's going to end at least. I think the only part right now that I'm immediately upset about is that Cersei got an easy death. She should've been killed by either Jaime or Arya after everything she's done on the show. Really unhappy about how they did that.

The rest I'll need to process a bit more. Dany going Mad Queen doesn't feel earned, just a rushed conclusion for the sake of hitting the story beats they planned out. The seeds for this really should've been sown from the beginning.

Yeah, those events are going to happen in the books too.

But just you know, actually well written, with a proper build up et al.

I would love for their bodies to never be found, so we can have never ending theories about how they escaped and now live in the summer isles or something.

Let's see. I barely have any motivation to analyze the plot.

Jon took the Kingsroad from Winterfell all the way south to the vicinity of King's Landing, then took a ship to Dragonstone....instead of taking a ship directly to Dragonstone...??? Okay.

"It doesn't matter now." Why doesn't it matter now? Jon is loyal. Jon would be down for marriage. Jon and Dany are hooking up and "in love," Why is marriage being dismissed out of hand by Varys and Tyrion? The topic hasn't even been broached with Dany or Jon.

Why is Varys attempting to carry out an assassination while also making it totally clear to several third parties that his loyalties have flipped, totally unnecessarily? Carry out the damned assassination first. He's not supposed to be this incompetent.

Davos is the "greatest smuggler in the world"? Since fucking when? Okay.

How many scorpion bolts get off in this entire battle, with dozens of scorpions and full preparation for a dragon attack? Two? Three? Okay.

Euron out of nowhere to attack Jaime, because the plot demands it. Okay. Such a dumbass one note character. Also, so much for Jaime going to King's Landing to kill Cersei. His character arc evaporated.

I've considered Dany an immature, unfit tyrant-in-the-making for a good while, so the outcome here is fine, but the transition doesn't really work.

Cleganebowl was choreographed lacklusterly and a major letdown after so much time.

So, that was the Golden Company? A wall blows out behind them and they get slaughtered? Okay. And they're in front of the city wall instead of behind it why exactly? Okay.

Okay.

My first thought when they talked about the bells signaling surrender was that Tyrion would ring the bell himself and that Cersei would could out and something would happen there, like Cersei would take advantage of Dany’s guard being down and slaughter her forces. I thought Cersei was gonna win, honestly

The show has passed the book since long time ago everyone knows this

without grrm writting guideline this has been expected for years, they gota work with what they have, actors in the show arent getting any younger either and wait for grrm to finish his book

how long are you guys going to hold this grudge?

Dude, I'm just pointing out the differences the books are going to have respect to the show version.

I'm aware I have to shut down my brain to enjoy the show. I absolutely loved the episode, as I said.

Stop being so defensive.
