Gamecube not so bad in Europe?

Reirom @ OA points out this Puissance Nintendo article, in his own endearingly articulate way:

BOMBA CUBE AM SECOND IN EUROPE SO CUBE 2 WORDLWIDE

:lol

The information is from Screen Digest who are a global media market research and analysis firm. The UK government's DTI has referenced these when commenting on the video game industry in the past so they are credible.

Those of us in the UK know how badly the Cube has done with retailers in the last year... a lot of people here have treated things as though this was a reflection on the rest of Europe. Screen Digest seem to be indicating otherwise:

Interesting stuff!

hmm, 2nd world-wide with no GTA or Halo, and now with RE4 and Maturelda coming up looks like Nintendo isn't doing as bad as people think...

i never understood how MS convinced people that they were even competing with the ps2.

they even sent fanboys today in the forum to convince us that there is an xbox2 news coming just to hide the fantastic news that GC is 2nd !!!

MS didn't need to convince anybody, people don't like Nintendo and have an aversion to portraying things negatively about them...

remember around 1 1/2 years ago they said they weren't out bringing out new hardware or something like that, but it was taken totally out of context and people were already talking 3rd party like Sega... they had 6 billion in the bank, how could that simple fact escape so many "journalists" calling out the demise the Nintendo is beyond me... when Nintendo is $500 million in the hole and their hardware is an utter failure then comparisons might me justifiable, but we are a long way from that even being a distant possibility...

they're ~1 mil behind xbox in europe.
but i think the difference is really much bigger if you look at consoles sold in 2004.

ps2 is of course destroying both (only if I knew why, but it can't be because of the exclusive japanese games, since a lot of them don't get released over here..). Must be the CL advertisments and things like that.

Quick, someone look up the number of households in these nations so we can extrapolate userbase figures!

Don't know about the other countries but for France:

332,000 Cubes sold in 2004
1.07 million Cubes sold since launch in France
(N64 sold 1.01 million in its lifetime in France)

GBA has sold 2.6 Million

Game sales

Pokemon FR/LG 280,000 each.
MKDD 470,000
SMS 290,000
Zelda:WW 255,000
SSBM 250,000

Shipped != sold, although it does = sold as far as Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are concerned.

These figures are console share per household.

All indications are that where Nintendo has sucked in the UK, they have maintained ground elsewhere.. France is emboldened because this is from Puissance Nintendo. But the other countries are interesting to see too. Its a far cry from the picture I've seen posters on these boards and elsewhere paint before.

This proves neither Nintendo or Microsoft are in a clear-cut second place in Europe. Between this, the Xbox favoring US and Xbox hating JPN -- we've got MS and Nintendo feasting in equal measure on Sony's scraps.

Is it any surprise the french would buy the more 'gayish' cute purple handled cube over the clunky machismo 'mine is bigger than yours' Xbox?

Because they really have to buy the purple cube!

In France, japanese culture is very, very popular. It is not really the case in Germany or Great Britain. That must explain a bit those higher sales for GC than for Xbox. For example, Pikmin or Tales of Symphonia did excellent sales in France, or even Kuru kuru kururin on GBA which were a huge success...
Moreover, there is always a little anti-american feeling in France (and Microsoft is identified as a strong american brand), but it is not so spread... Frankly, I don't think it is significant to explain higher Gamecube sales...
Nevertheless, currently, in France, the Xbox is on the point to overcome the Gamecube in terms of sales. Nintendo must react to stay second...

PS : the image of these stats is taken from the french website P-Nintendo.com...
PS 2 : please apologize me for my bad english. you must have understood I'm french :)

GC isn't 2nd worldwide. In fact, according to Nintendo and MS's shipped figures, GC is almost 2 million behind the Xbox.

GC 2 million behind the xbox worldwide ? False ! definitely false !

Shipped figures were about a million apart iirc.

XB

1.70m Japan (asia pacific- some discrepancy as sony and microsft count as japan, others count as Europe/Pal)
13.20m USA
5.00m Europe

19.90m Total

GC

3.78m Japan
10.11m USA
4.13m Europe

18.02m Total

Actually only MS uses the "Asia-Pacific" designation. Sony and Nintendo both go by PAL regions.

The gap's wider than I remembered, though when were these numbers given exactly again? What period are they up until?

Those are the ones that are up to 12/31/04.

many of these Xboxes are shipped to Asian countries like Taiwan and Singapore.. Nintendo only released GC in Japan and Korea..

Both also saw an official Hong Kong release I think. Though that's obviously not going to amount to anything substantial.

Microsoft's AP figures are shooting way over sold though. They're what, 500-600k in both Japan and Australia? Then other regions like Korea, Taiwan, New Zealand and others are all likely under 50k. That's a long way to 1.7M... by comparison GameCube's around 3.5-6M sold through in Japan iirc.

Looking at this chart, I think Xbox Europe shipped figures might've overshot sold by a good amount too. They're not really far off from GameCube according to the chart, yet they have like 1.5M more shipped. :/

I can't post a link, becasue it was soooo long ago, but I once read in a famitsu article on a game show in Taiwan that the Xbox was doing suprisingly well there, around 500,000 sold. Again, it'd take forever to dig up that link, so take it with a grain of salt.

GameCube ain't 2nd worldwide, they are still 1 - 2 M units behind Xbox, but it ISN'T a LOT. Will they ever catch up? No. Not gonna happen, ever.

The sad thing is MS propaganda aka FUD - mentioning only Sony, making GameCube a distant (like 10 M units less!) opponent etc.

500k in Taiwan? No chance, you must be confused. Korea is a much more active game market and they aren't to 500k for PS2 even.

i thought everyone here just agreed those were shipping numbers??

I'm pretty sure I read that Sony celebrated selling 1M PS2 in Korea, and in a faster time frame than they had originally thought.

The numbers released from MS are part of SEC filings. They could get in huge trouble if they were cooking the books. MS numbers reported are based on their other business's break things down into. It's not to hide anything.

Yes, and retailers dont order unless they plan to sell them. MS/Nintendo/Sony cant force a retailer to take a shipment. Not to mention since XBOX was sold out basically all around the world they are nearly the same anyway.

Ack, I think you're right... that sounds familiar. Looking through threads, people were quoting Xbox Korean sell through at 50k last summer.... Faf?

I'd be damned in there are more Xbox systems sold in Taiwan than there are in Japan.
