hp dv6t quad owners, are your fans on all the time even when your not running any programs? HP is running the sale again for 30% off plus a bunch of free upgrades. Also, how are the viewing angles?

Nope. I took special notice of that..."Hey, no fans!". Was super quiet just browsing and stuff. Just played Amnesia for about an hour, and it's warm, but not freakily so. Woot!

Viewing angles are great, for me at least.

And goddamn, I just love this color. Under a yellow light, it looks ultrasexy shiny metallic black, under white-ish light, it's this cool really dark metallic brown.

I am looking to purchase a Macbook Pro 15inch for college and was wondering how it would do for some gaming.

It is the model with 4gb ram, 2.2ghz quad-core i7, 1440x900 res screen and an AMD radeon HD 6750M 1GB.

I am guessing I would be all set for source games (pretty much all the Valve games), Minecraft, Civ 5, Super Meat Boy and the like? Maybe even Blops or Modern Warfare 3 when it is out, I dunno...

I own a gaming PC and can play the latest games at max settings, but I don't know anything about laptop hardware and don't want to lug my rig up to college with me so I was thinking this could be a good all purpose machine. I am not expecting to be able to play all the latest games or whatever, since I have my rig at home, but for the games listed above I should be all set right?

Been using the dv6 for a couple of days now.

It's pretty nice! Runs Battlefield Bad Company @ 60 fps on medium settings/2x AA.

my one complaint is that it gets SUPER hot on the gpu exhaust fan. Like.. i held my hand to the grill and it burned me.

Other than that, it's pretty great.
Tomorrow i get my Asus g73JH and will post comparisons.

Sending my Clevo back to get a stuck pixel fixed tomorrow :(

I'm happy enough that it's going back though. Jack at Logical Blue One didn't give me any fine-print-in-the-warranty bullshit, just told me to send it back for repair. Very happy with the service.

I haven't experienced that at all. Well, I played Amnesia for a bit (I have no idea how taxing that is, though), and it wasn't crazy hot.

I decided to finally order a laptop last night from HP. Could some of you guys let me know just what I should be able to do with this machine? I went for the dv7tqe with the following specs for $990.56/shipped:
Here are my specs:

dv7t Quad Ed
• Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
• 2nd generation Intel(R) Quad Core(TM) i7-2630QM (2.0 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz
• 1GB GDDR5 Radeon(TM) HD 6770M Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
• FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• 640GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
• No Additional Office Software
• FREE Upgrade to Norton Internet Security(TM) 2011 - 15 Month Subscription (activation required)
• One 6-Cell and One 9-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
• 17.3" diagonal HD+ HP BrightView LED Display (1600 x 900)
• FREE Upgrade to Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
• HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone and HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader
• Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN with Wireless Display Support
• Standard Keyboard
• HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

To put everything into perspective, the desktop PC I'm using right now is a 2003 Gateway with Windows XP and the Pentium 4CPU 2.00GHz 1.99 GHz, with only 2GB of RAM and a 111GB capacity HD. Oh, and not to mention that my monitor is only an old 15 inch non-HD flatscreen.

So to put it gently, I'm working with an old piece of crap here and have gotten to the point where it is a nightmare to use. So just about anything else would be better than what I have right now.

I have a budget ranging from $600-$900 and am looking for a laptop that can handle PC RPG's (like The Witcher 2). Can someone please recommend the best possible laptop for me to buy within that price range. I want to make sure that I get the best for my money. Thank you
The HP DV6 has the most powerful GPU in that price range, but it's bottom of the barrel for Thee Witcher 2.

Spending $1k will get you this G73, which nets you a GPU which is over 50% faster than the 6770M.

Hm, thanks for the info. It's really going to come down to the money and portability for me. I need something that I can move around and has decent battery life.

For the person looking for the witcher: try googling/youtubing look for witcher benchmarks in the witcher 2 thread with your laptop/gpu to see how it runs. Witcher 2 is apparently very intensive and I can run it on low on my laptop for 30 fps if I have to believe youtube videos :p

According to the Benchmarks (5770/6770) I'll be pulling ~20 fps in very high, at 1080p. But, I'll be playing at 720p, so I'm hoping for higher fps (30 would be great), even if I have to take some things down a bit.

thoughts:

I have upgraded the screen on both to 1600x900, i think its worth it.
I have no idea of the graphic card power, this is were gaming-laptop-gaf comes to my rescue.
I have upgraded the vaio graphics card to the expensiver one.
Is it worth the 3 gb upgrade in video ram of the alienware? Its not so expensive.
The ram on both laptops have been upgraded to 6 gigs, Im not so sure whats the "udontneedmore" quantity in terms of ram.
The alienware one comes with standard one year warranty whereas in the vaio picked the 3 year extended warranty (90€).
The vaio has a blu ray drive (and a blu ray recorder for not much more, but no sure if its woth it).

Thanks in advance gaf.

Both of those laptops have very underpowered GPU's, especially for their price. I would look at something else if you want a good gaming laptop, but any gaming laptop under 15" is going to either be A. very expensive or B. expensive with a videocard much weaker than one you'd get in a bigger laptop for (less) money.

Flying Toaster said:
1) What is your budget?
Up to $3,000 US dollars unless the market for some reasons stops taking those
2) What size notebook would you prefer?

a. Netbook; 10” screen or less
b. Ultraportable; 11" - 12” screen
c. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen

3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.
Internet, I assume its America but who knows.
4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
N/A (any will do)

5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
Has to be new.

6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
Gaming, Internet

7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
Both

8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
RPG's: The newest being Witcher 2. And MMO's possibly the new Star Wars.
9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
Should be near a power supply almost all the time, or at least have the options to purchase extra batteries so time is not a crucial factor

10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
Online is fine.

11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista or Windows 7), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
I just retired a MAC with OS 10 and I use Windows and Linux as my main platforms at work so OS is not a problem. With Games I would assume Windows 7
Screen Specifics

900p and or possibly better if these are options I can go lower if need be for a smaller laptop that can still play newer RPG's

14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
I would prefere if it did not come duct taped/electrical taped like a mummy

15) When are you buying this laptop?
ASAP

16) How long do you want this laptop to last?
At least 2 years

17) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 640GB? Do you want a SSD drive?
250-500GB HD 7200, I can upgrade to an SSD if I want to later

18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?
Not necessary unless its already an option as I use dd for almost all my pc gaming needs.

Buy either a G53SW, G73SW/JH, or Alienware M17x R3 if you've got big bucks to spend and want a 6970M.

G53SW is $1200ish and the M17x R3 can be had for $2kish. I've seen them used/brand new for $1900.

So the asus g51 or g53 are the place to go in your opinion? I have seen the g53 and its like 1600€ :walletcries:

Jesus. Newegg is letting me down. I ordered my G73JH Wednesday last week. I opted for 2 day shipping and got it on Monday.
It has a malfunction and wont power on via AC power, or charge the battery. I called and had them ship a replacement (overnight) at 12 noon.
Didn't get the replacement Tuesday like i was supposed to. Turns out it didn't get placed in time and i was told will not arrive until Wednesday.
Today I checked the tracking and it said "shipper tendered the shipment too late for the selected shipping method, 1 day delay likely."
So I'm getting it Thursday now. (which is over a week after I placed my order, and I paid for 2 day shipping.)

God damn, I've never had any problems with Newegg. This sucks! I work weekends and was hoping to have some time to mess around with it before my work week.

I don't know if this is new or not but HP now seems to offer 1080p anti-glare screens with dv6t quad editions for $150 more.

Also offering a 2GB version of the 6770M graphics card for fifty dollars more than the 1GB.

Quick question : Can you replace video cards in laptops? Specifically the sony vaio C series. Thanks!

edit : prolly could've googled this.

That'd be my recommendation. You could also get a used G53 or G73 for much less.

Anyone that wants a 6970m equipped Alienware m17x r3, I've found them for $1550 minus tax. Pretty good deal.

Have there been any good benchmarks yet that compare the m11x R2 to the R3, in everything from battery life, to performance, to screen quality?

I really need to stop looking at this thread. My laptop is starting to show its age in terms of game performance - it's about two years old - but looking at games like the Witcher 2 make me want to splurge and you guys keep posting such good deals! But I'm gonna try to hold off til this fall when Skyrim, BF3 and the other heavy hitters launch.

In the meantime, I live vicariously through you guys :P

EXGN said:

That's sort of what I'm waiting for as well. I really want to jump in with a Notebook, but by the time Skyrim comes out we'll have had a decent boost in price/performance ratio. And I'm sure anyone getting serious about a gaming notebook right now really wants it to play Skyrim well.

Random thought, what's it looking like for AMD Bulldozer parts in notebooks so far? I'm down for options and I'm pretty excited to have some new cpu stuff to look forward to on top of the gpus that may happen later this year.

So I don't really spend much time @ home any more. Most of my free time is either on a bus or on break since I work quite a bit (up to 18 hours a day at times).

I really miss gaming on my Ps3/Xbox 360, but really have no time. I'm looking to now get a laptop that's small and powerful, but capable of gaming.

What I mainly want this for is playing emu, ps2 and wii mainly since I already have a huge collection of those games. Was wondering if I'm out of luck If I want something small?

Is the M11x my best option for something small and "cheap"?

My budget is about $1500 but I'm hoping to not spend that much :).

Also how capable are netbooks these days? I remember the Asus n10 series was pretty popular for gaming when overclocked are there new contenders in that respect? I'm looking to go as small as possible, but I DO want to game.

The reason I want something smaller is because I don't have much space to put a laptop. Although I know for the money I'll be spending it'd be better to just get something bigger, that really isn't much of an option. Any help would be appreciated.

I was thinking of bringing around my Asus N81 which is an OKAY size, but it's constantly blue screening now. That's about the max size I'd be able to go to. It's also going on 2 years old now so I'd be looking to get something more modern.

how does that look? I don't like how so many laptops have 5400rpm hard drives though, it's disappointing Xo. It's 14'' though which is a plus, i don't want a huge laptop, and the graphics card seems respectable.

Intel GMA HD (integrated) =no gaming

The only ones I've seen that have a respectable graphics card at a sub $700 price would be some acer models

Australian dollars ? Well, everything is more expensive in Australia.... and gets launched two months later, right ? In that case, then yes, it is almost good. If the resolution, CPU and memory size are all low then it is total garbage.

Hopefully, you got a mid-range Sandy Bridge CPU as well as a Full HD screen + 8 GB RAM.

Muahahhaha the Asus one i linked to has a Nvidia 425M with optimus switching, which is slightly worse than AMD 6650 i believe from notebook check, but the Asus one allegedly has around 9hr battery life when not using the 425m, which is something i really want. I wish the sandy bridge updates would be hitting more laptops now though. Such a slow trickle.

As I'm a newbie, what's a good laptop to play games like TF2, ranging 700-900 dollars (maybe 1000), that would also accommodate to college needs? Decent battery life etc.

Tell me if the above criteria is vague.

My M11X plays TF2 exceptionally well. With the dedicated video card turned off I get like ~5-6 hours of battery life. It's perfect size to carry around too. I definately recommend it for college, I'm currently using mine for the same purpose. I think that the R3 models are coming soon though, somebody with more knowledge should be able to answer that question.

Just did a quick search, and I believe R3 models are what is shipping from Dell now.

Actually they are coming out with a sandy bridge version of the U41 (U41sv) with sandy bridge and nvidia 540m, i might get that or whatever is on sale Xo

Yes....Australian dollars. Usually it retails for $1,603.00 AU! So it seems like a really great deal! <3

Here's some more info on it. A friend told me it's a steal at this price, and I'm happy with it so far.

So I'm getting ready to make my first laptop purchase ever for grad school. Been 100% desktop up to this point.

I need to make my purchase around early August to be ready for September.. As of now, looks like I'll be going with the Asus G53.

My question however is if anyone who follows the industry more than myself (I didn't even know Asus was considered reliable until I skimmed through the last couple pages of this thread) could offer insight into the short-term release plans of other companies? Will something dethrone the G53 by this August for the back-to-school season?

My only major requirements are 1080p, Core i7 and a powerful Nvidia GPU, preferably 460M (must be Nvidia though, have had awful awful experiences with ATI and will not give them anymore of my money ever again - might make recommendations more difficult, sorry). The new Dell macbook-like laptop looks alright but its GPU is really disappointing.

Thank you in advance :)

What does recertified really mean? What process did it go through? Also, is it possible to replace that HD with something faster?

Recertified means that the manufacturer received it with something wrong (probably a blown CPU or GPU) and they fixed it.

Yes, you can replace the GPU with something faster.

For anyone that wants an Alienware, they have a coupon at Dell Outlet that gives $250 off of $1299 or more right now.

JNZCZ9RDGHP$DV

You can get an M17x R2 for as low as $1050, and I've seen M17x R3's with 6970M's go for $1550 - $250 = $1300 for a 6970M equipped beast.

I might buy one of those M17x R3's with 6970M for $1300 if one goes up for sale again...

I think i might pick up one of those alienwares, i am not a big PC guy but i do love some pc gaming, have a decent laptop that can run the games i currently care about but wouldn't mind being able to play Witcher 2, Diablo 3 (when it comes) and a few other games.

Don't really want to spend more then a grand though, don't even want to spend that but i do need a new laptop.
