also how is the Netgear Push2TV Adapter for 80 dollars?

I could add this: 15.6 FHD B+RGLED TL (1920x1080) and Skype-Certified 2.0MP HD Webcam [Included in Price]

and it will raise the price to 1400 with tax/shipping. Is that still good? If we get this, its going to be for everyday use ie web browsing and other simple things like that. Or I might make my current laptop the desktop PC. Then use this for my own research.

Just got home with my G73JH-A1 a couple of hours ago.

Wow, this thing is a beast. Huge improvement over my G60JX in every single way. Got my SSD and a 640 GB + 500 GB hard drives installed, 6 GB of RAM, everything is installed and I've overclocked. Time to test some games!

P.S. If any G73 owners want a new screen, definitely pick up an AUO 1080p replacement. Looks GREAT.

Edit: WOW. The sound system on this destroys the G60JX. It's like 5x louder, 2x clearer and the small subwoofer actually adds punch! The G60JX had super weak sound, and this feels like an improvement by 10x overall. Big, big difference.

The screen is gorgeous. Mindblowing clear and the colors are dazzling. Runs like butter, too.

So glad I upgraded.

Small update to any performance-minded mobile PC gamers looking to get a G73JH: it overclocks really, really well.

The 5870M is stock @ 700/1000 core/RAM(x4 because it's GDDR5)

So far my most stable overclocks are 850/1125. That's a 150 Mhz increase on the core and effective 500 Mhz increase on the RAM. It makes an already superfast GPU even faster.

So if you want something with headroom for extra performance, I highly recommend it. Still astounded that this laptop handles 1080p @ maxed out settings on every game like butter.

I just got shipping confirmation for my dv7t (9 days early) :D

I don't know if it really helped, but thanks to an idea from that notebookreview thread I used their e-mail form and sent a message a day or two ago to their customer service to clarify my order status and to say that it was frustrating to see people in that thread get the exact same configuration shipped before mine when they ordered after me.

Probably won't make it here before my summer classes start, but that's fine with me. The wait for it to be shipped should be easier since at least I'll get updates every day or two.

Edit: Hah, maybe not. I just got a reply to that e-mail. Either way, it's nice to know that my laptop is on its way.

Any advice on disk imaging software? I'd like to install a fresh copy of Windows 7 on my HP dv7t but not before taking an image of all the hidden drives, and backup copy of Windows 7 that's already on there.

As of now, I just uninstalled the bloat but I'd prefer to re-install fresh. Plus, It came with Home Premium but I have a Premium license key I'd rather use.

Acronos True Image is generally considered the best. Not free though, but I've used it numerous times and it's always worked successfully, which is what matters.

I am having SUCH a hard time deciding between my already ordered dv6 and that asus g73jh.

!!!
battery life vs. gaming performance
faster processor vs. faster graphics card
new vs refurbished
$850 vs. $1000
7200 rpm hdd vs 5400 rpm hdd
15.4 inch vs. 17 inch
edit: est ship date SHIPPED vs. 2 day shipping

I have a desktop with a 5850 and an i5 750 @ 3.4 ghz. I also have an m11x r1 that i *plan* on selling once i get my next laptop.
I'm trying to decide on what I need this new laptop for. Should i go for better battery life and processor since i have a gaming desktop that is pretty powerful?

I need a counselor.

Hello! I was wondering if there is any laptop pretty decent for gaming in the $400-$600 range? It's pretty hard to find one, but maybe you know of one!

The G73JH spanks the DV6 except in processor speed.

If you want better performance, just get the G73 since you're selling your M11x as well.

I'm selling my Asus G60JX for $630. It plays everything on High @ 1366x768. Really nice laptop. You can PM me if you're interested.

The 5870M is only a 5770, at best, and that's when overclocked. Not exactly a 1080p monster.

Are you not entertained?!

There are a few things under NDA, which might come to market in the next few months.

I'm really stretching the budget here, I can't go higher at all. I know this laptop won't max things out or anything, but will it at least be able to play Valve/Source games at medium?

I've been playing Bad Company 2, Section 8: Prejudice, Portal 2 and Crysis 2. All of them run beautifully on maxed settings (Crysis 2 needs a little tweaking to increase performance, but still looks amazing).

Ok, annoying rant about the Core i7 mobile processors:

Been experimenting with my i7-720qm and figured out some interesting things about the non-Extreme mobile i7's:

Performance is actually WORSE than my Core i5-520m that was in my Asus G60JX when running games that aren't heavily multithreaded, due to the idiotic way Intel has set up the (non-tweakable) TDP 45w max throttling on these processors.

Basically what happens is that as more and more cores are loaded (physical or not), the CPU keeps throttling down and down. The turbo boost numbers Intel publishes are a lie: they say the 720m hits boost at 2.8 Ghz; it doesn't. That's 2.8 Ghz if only ONE core is loaded and no other cores are active at all, which is impossible since at least one other core is always active, tending background processes in Windows. So really, the max you're gonna get with one core loaded is 2.5 Ghz or less.

Keeping that in mind, this means that unless you change the core affinity for games that don't need quad-core for maximum performance, Windows will be scaling the CPU load across all 4 physical (and hyperthreaded) cores, which means your Turbo Boost is effectively disabled when using more than 4 cores, which sticks you at stock clocks (1.6 Ghz for the 720m). Using just 4 cores gives you a very small turbo boost, about 400-500 mhz.Let me tell you, at 1.6 Ghz Core i7's are slow. My i5 never had this problem, even before I tweaked it with ThrottleStop and overclocked it.

Example:

When using Prime 95 with my i7 720m overclocked from 1.6 Ghz to 1.77 Ghz:

1 thread torture test, processor affinity = 1 core: 2.89 Ghz Turbo Boost, jumps from 2.70 Ghz to 2.89 Ghz (due to multiplier shifting)

1 thread torture test, processor affinity = 2 cores: max 2.85 Ghz Turbo Boost, jumps from 2.60 Ghz to 2.85 Ghz

2 thread torture test, processor affinity = 2 cores: max 2.80 Ghz Turbo Boost, jumps from 2.60 Ghz to 2.85 Ghz

2 thread torture test, processor affinity = 4 cores: max 2.42 Ghz Turbo Boost, jumps 2.3 to 2.42 Ghz

2 thread torture test, processor affinity = 8 cores: max 2.2 Ghz Turbo Boost, jumps 1.9 to 2.2 Ghz

4 thread torture test, processor affinity = 4 cores: max 2.3 Ghz Turbo Boost, jumps 2.0 to 2.3 Ghz

4 thread torture test, processor affinity = 8 cores: max 1.87 Ghz Turbo Boost

As you can see from the above data, the more cores involved, the slower it's going to be. Performance is OK with 4 threads and 4 cores when the affinity is set to use only 4 cores, but use more than 4 and the clocks drop like a rock.

So for the vast majority of people, using a Core i7 will be slower than a Core i5 unless you're using something that is multi-threaded enough to effectively use a quad-core. Also, a large majority of people aren't familiar with setting core affinity nor are they aware of this issue. For comparison, my Core i5 520m could be overclocked to 3.2 Ghz when Turbo boosted, even with both cores (and the extra two hyperthreaded cores) @ 100% load. The i7 720m, 740m, and 820m throttle down when approaching their stupid 45w TDP max, so that means they can't be overclocked very much nor can they be forced to run with full turbo boost when the cores are loaded 100% since you can't disable Intel's TDP throttling.

In summary: Core i7 mobile has worse performance than core i5 in games that don't take advantage of quad-core, and can't be forced to run at full speed nor overclock nearly as much. Not sure if this is true for the Sandybridge Core i7 Mobiles, but from what I've read they're even more locked down than the previous generation. Really lame way for Intel to force you to buy an Extreme edition Mobile processor if you want a truly high performance mobile i7, which go for at least $350-500 on ebay/forums. :\

That sucks.. :( So, i have a 1.73 core 2 duo in my m11x.. will the performance (in games that dont take advantage of 4 cores) be the same? If so, :X

Anyways, I ordered the g73jh earlier today. 2 day shipping. SUPER pumped. :)

Core 2 Duo doesn't use hyperthreading/turbo boost, it's only the core i7 mobiles that are effected by this problem.

So your G73JH will suffer from this problem unless you use RadeonPro/manually force core affinity for your games.

Same here.

BF3: Probably Medium to High settings at good FPS
BC2: Runs maxed out with 2-4x AA very smooth even @ 1080p in DirectX 11, getting rid of crappy HBAO and Bloom and using DX9 or DX10 keeps it looking beautiful and bumps up the FPS even more.
Crysis 2: Runs @ High very smoothly, haven't benchmarked it yet but it runs great
Witcher 1: Haven't installed it yet but it should run pretty good, really unoptimized game though so the performance on any hardware isn't what it should be
Witcher 2: Should run beautifully @ High settings, maybe some Ultra thrown in if you overclock

So I'm down to the homestretch on HDD space (damn you Steam!). Currently sitting at 14/250GB and since I intend to keep my laptop for a few more years, I'm thinking I need a new hard drive. Are there any particularly good 7.2k RPM/500GB laptop hard drives out there? Or are they pretty much all the same?

It honestly doesn't look to bad for that price. The 540m is a pretty decent card.

Man, why does finding a decent gaming laptop for a good price sooo freakin hard?

Lenovo Oulet has an ideapad refurb that doesn't look too bad for $623 + tax. Coupon codes usually aren't too hard to find for discounts.

*Intel® Core™ i5-560M (2.66GHz base; 3.20GHz Max Turbo, 3MB Cache)
*ATI™ Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650
*The screen resolution and size is kinda small @ 14.0” WXGA HD (1366 X 768)

Is it sad that I'm so excited for the arrival of my new laptop this morning that I feel like a teenage girl and didn't get much sleep last night?

Medion Erazer X6811 - Intel Core i7-740QM 6 Go 1 To (2x 500 Go) 15.6" LED NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M

btw.

I got it around 1000€ and with the price of the taxes over here I think it's real cheap.

Dunno if it can last for a few years, but I did 3 years or so with a 700€ laptop that still can run Crysis at a confortable setting. Overheating and freezing far too much recently though.Goodbye friend:(

Alright GAF, need some quick advice.

Looking for a Laptop that will run at (preferably) Star Wars: TOR, Guild Wars 2, The Witcher 2 and say, Battlefield 3 at mid to high settings. Saw these two:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215037

and

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115986

Specs look about the same and all. Different cards. Which one is more bang for my buck (even though it's the same price).

Get the one with the GT540M. It's faster than the 6650M and that Core i3 is a nicer processor than the AMD quad-core (runs cooler too). The GT540M is a good overclocker, only thing that sucks is that it's on GDDR3.

So my parents have offered to buy me a laptop to celebrate my high school graduation. I don't have a budget, but I'd like to keep it under $1000.00

I'm looking for something that is good for school use (decent battery life), as well as gaming. I'm not looking to run much other than a few Steam games here and there, and the most graphically intense game I'm likely to play is probably Guild Wars 2 when it comes out. What would you guys suggest?

I wasn't very clear.. what i meant was "will i not see an improvement in cpu over my m11x in games without quad core support because of this problem?"

My DV6 was shipped a day early (on Tuesday, just got my internet back up), should be here on Tuesday!

But, I won't there to receive it, I'll probably have FedEx hold it at a nearby location, but I think they still need to try to deliver it first. I'd love to swing by and just pick it up Tuesday morning.

Be specific. In what games are you seeing less performance, and by how much? I'm talking changes in average framerate.

The stock 5870M is 2x the speed of the GTX 260M. It's hard to believe that the CPU is making as big of an impact.

I'm not saying overall performance is worse; it's much, much better, especially considering I'm running higher settings and a vastly higher resolution. But what I mean is that in games that aren't heavily multithreaded, my old overclocked i5 had higher CPU performance.

I guess it's a moot point because the GPU is the limiting factor 95% of the time. Performance in Bad Company 2, Crysis 2, and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood are way, way up over the G60JX.

Because a 90 day warranty is terrifying?

$79.99 for an extra year is worth it.

I say go for 2 years. It's only $40 more i think.
Totally worth it.. I've had some bad experiences with gaming laptops and gpu failure/overheating problems.

You'll be sorry...

I bought this with 2 years warranty. Arrives Saturday.

Sounds like we might be on the same shipment coming in :)

Guess so. It's already in AK, Alaska (as of 2pm this afternoon). Hopefully it gets here before the estimated date, Tuesday.

Hmm, maybe not. I saw there were two FedEx flights close to each other, you might have been on the late one since mine says it's already left the Anchorage facility.

Edit: Holy crap. Just got an e-mail notification saying my laptop is already here in Orlando and is being delivered today, a whole 4 days early.

Well after reading through this thread I have decided to purchase a
ASUS G Series G53SW-XN1. It was in stock when I checked this morning, so
I went for it.

I will be going from an old 2005 Dell to this, so I'm looking forward to having this
come in sometime next week.

Is this a good decision for gaming? It's still not to late to cancel my order, so I figured
I'd get some other opinions.

The Asus G73JH is like $200 less and is equally as powerful if not faster for gaming. The 5870 Mobility > 460M GTX in most games.

But if you don't want a big 17", the G53 is fine.

Yeah impressions would be great. Looking at this and HP Dv6t (6770). Can't decide..Help!?!

The only really graphically impressive game I own is Crysis, which I just got on the Steam sale and haven't installed yet. In the mean time, here are two screenshots I took. Not amazing games to show, but they're more recent releases.

Resolution: 1920 x 1080
Texture Detail Level: Very High
Anisotropic Filtering: 8
Antialiasing: 2x Samples (had to drop from 4x because it was hurting the framerate.)
On: Verical Sync, Extra Gamma effects, Render Glow, Distortion Effects, High Quality Video
I don't know what EAX is so I don't have it enabled.

Resolution: 1920 x 1080
Image Quality: 4x antialiasing (I think with this too 8x hurt the framerate. Not sure though).
On: Vsync and Triple Buffer.

I hate you.

Okay, finally installed Crysis. Here are some pictures early from the game. Again, this is the laptop I purchased. The specs are:

Intel i7-2630QM (2.0 GHz Quad-Core with Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz); 8GB DDR3 1333MHz (4 x 2GB SODIMM Sockets, up to 16GB)
Nvidia GTX 460M Graphics with 1.5GB GDDR5; 750GB HDD 7200RPM

I want to note I'm not a PC gamer, so my knowledge of hardware is pretty limited. Also, I'm experiencing same typing lag right now. Not sure the cause; haven't investigated too deeply.

Just for giggles I let it check for optimal settings. It set everything to medium and turned off antialiasing.

Ew.

Much better. This is set to very high with 2x antialiasing. I tried it with 16x and it seemed to hurt the frame rate. At 2x it wasn't too choppy.

A few more pictures here:

Grass

It looks pretty good. I'm a little disappointed in the performance, but that might just have to do with the problem I'm currently experiencing.

Wouldn't it be worth it to get the sandy bridge i7 though?

Okay, my laptop will be here soon, and I'm ready for it.

I just have a question about removing all the bloatware it'll come with. See, I've never done that before.

Does it really make a difference?

How much?

Lastly, how do I go about removing it?

Not really. These laptops aren't CPU limited, they're GPU limited. The difference between first gen i7 mobiles and Sandy Bridge wouldn't be noticeable in 99% of games, but the GPU sure would.

Plus the Sandy Bridge i7 mobiles are even more locked down than the originals, so overclocking them sucks too.

I'd just get a bone-stock copy of Windows 7 and wipe the pre-installed bloatware version of Windows 7 that your laptop comes with. That's what I did.

You should be able to use your Windows 7 serial on the bottom of your laptop with a 'normal' version of Windows 7.
