Guys what do you think?

Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM , 16 GB DDR3-RAM, NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX560

- 5400 rmp HDD
- kind of a budget brand but gets good reviews

1200 euro

OR

Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM , 8 GB DDR3-RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6990

- 7200 rmp HDD
- custom built laptop from online only shop
- HD 6990 in 15.6" = death?

1400 euro

That HD is fucking Sloooow in your first option and 16 gigs is a bit overkill. The 6990 takes a bit more of an edge over the 560. They are close in performance. the links you posted do not work for me so I can't see what MHz the Ram sticks are to really compare them but, aside from that, I would lean toward the latter option. Your reads off that HD will be faster and the GPU is stronger

What kind of battery life should I expect on the Sager?

It seems that the Sager laptop has a battery life of only 2-3 hours. Does anyone know of a good gaming laptop that has at least 5 hours of battery?

m11x and m14x.

Not 5 hours of gaming, since that's pretty much impossible unless you get a battery that alone weighs 10+ pounds, but easily 5+ hours of web browsing and such.

uhh... the link you provided.. those are for mobile cards or desktop cards? i believe the 6970m already bests the gtx560m, and the 6990m is on par with gtx580m.

The 6970M is/was a very good chip. It's also not being sold anymore.

Luckily for you, the 6970M was replaced by the 6990M, at the same price the former was sold for, and it brings a performance increase of 20%.

is this true for dell? so if my 6970m breaks down during warranty, they're most likely going to replace with 6990m ?

I know this may be sacrilege since this is the gamer-approved laptop thread.... but I was wondering what the best deal for a laptop is right now if you *don't* want to play games on it?

Basically, I want it to make music on. So it should be powerful but a good video card would not be important at all to me. I already have a very good external sound card as well.

Any recommendations?

There are too many other factors that matter before people give recommendations. Do you care about size? What about battery life? How big of a screen do you need, and what resolution? What is your price range?

Hello gentlemans. I need help deciding if I want to buy Deus Ex Human Revolution on the PC or 360. The only thing I'm unsure about is if my laptop meets the recommended specs for the graphics card. Everything else should exceed the requirements. If it doesn't, what kind of graphics settings do you think I could get away with in-game?

What I have:

- Windows 7 64-bit
- Intel i7-2630QM (2.0 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz
- 8GB DDR3 (2 Dimm)
- Radeon HD 6770M 1GB GDDR5

Recommended:

- OS: Windows 7
- PROCESSOR: AMD Phenom II X4 or Intel Core 2 Quad or better
- RAM: 2 GB
- GRAPHICS: AMD Radeon HD 5850

Min (if that matters):

- OS: Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 with DirectX 9.0c
- PROCESSOR: 2 GHz dual core
- RAM: 1 GB RAM (Windows XP) / 2 GB (Windows Vista and Windows 7)
- GRAPHICS: NVIDIA GeForce 8000 series or ATI Radeon HD 2000 series or better

Thank you.

The bottom line is that the 6770M will run Deus Ex much better than the 360 version.

At higher resolution, higher settings, and higher framerate. Buy on PC.

Alienware M17x, Clevo P170HM (Sager NP8170), or P150HM (NP8150).

2630QM + 6990M

I'm about to find this out. I need to RMA my Sager, and I'll be asking for a free upgrade to the 6990M

Has anyone seen this ASUS U46SV?

http://www.gentechpc.com/showpages.asp?pid=1073

14" 1366x768 Glossy
2nd Generation Intel Core i5-2410M
nVidia GeForce GT 540M 1GB GDDR3 Optimus Technology + Intel HD Graphics
4GB DDR3 1333MHz PC10600
640 5400rpm SATA II 8MB
8X DVDRW Super Multi
Built-in 802.11 Wireless N
Built-in Bluetooth

0.3 MP webcam
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
8 hour battery life
4.85 lbs with 8 cell battery

There's a model out right now at Best Buy (U46E) without the dedicated GPU, but I'm waiting for this one because I want the ability to game. I would have been all over the Best Buy model otherwise, because when I went to check it out I loved it. It seems like a laptop that manages to be both somewhat portable (~5 lb), decently powerful (it passes BF3 recommended settings!), while also having pretty good battery life -- all at a decent price. Right now I just have a massive 3-year-old 17" Dell that was a gift in the first place (wouldn't have bought a desktop replacement laptop) and I don't want to shell out for a gaming desktop + laptop (or even netbook). The only downside is the relatively low resolution (1366x768), but that seems like the normal 14" and even 15" configuration. I guess I could always hook it up to a 1920x1200 monitor at home.

That looks like a really decent 14" machine, but....

Nah, you'll be lucky if it passes the minimum GPU requirement.

I was going by this:

http://bf3blog.com/battlefield-3-system-requirements/

I saw DirectX 11 and 1 GB and was hoping it passed. *cries*

you can definitely play BF3 with the setup but don't expect to get a decent framerate and graphical settings.

if i recall the recommended GPU was a GTX460 or above, which it's equivelent in mobile cards are only found in 15 (Sager only i think) and 17 inchers.

I'm about to find this out. I need to RMA my Sager, and I'll be asking for a free upgrade to the 6990M

hehehehehe, please do tell

Gotcha. I'll be getting the laptop nonetheless, but thank you for tempering my expectations. It'll still be much better than my current laptop.

Hey laptop GAF. My lady wants a new laptop and was thinking of getting the 15r for 700 dollars. Here is the one she was thinking about:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834200290
Dell has it for 100 dollars less than Newegg but seems the HD speed is at 5400 instead of 7200 rpm. She is only going to use it for school work but wants something that will last her for the next 5 years. Would you guys go with something else than this?

Okay, GAF, just a quick Yay or Nay please:

Acer Aspire (4750G)

Intel i7 (Quad-core) 2.0/2.9(turbo)GHz
LED 14.0 (1366x768)
Intel HD Graphics 3000
NVIDIA GT 540M 2GB DDR3
2GB RAM (Upgraded to 6GB for free)
750GB SATA
USB 3.0

£600, USD$1000

YES or NO?

That's way way way more powerful than the one I bought myself last year for a similar price. I say yes.

I just recieved a laptop for my bday. Curious to see how it would run games like Crysis. I dont know the exact specs per say but its an HP DV6-6135dx Entertainment PC with Win7, Ab Vision AMD (whatever that is), quad core and radeon dual graphics.... is this any good?

Would the spec be able to run any games well? Say...Crysis? What mode could I run it on?
At 720p, you'll be able to mix medium and high.

720p, with a mix of medium and high

Can't say, until you tell me what graphics card is installed. Check the Display Adapters tab under Device Manager.

I bought a Sony Vaio SA these are the specs=

Intel® Core™ i7-2620M processor (2.70GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 3.40GHz
13.3" LED backlit display (1600x900)
4GB (4GB Fixed Onboard + 1 Open SDRAM Slot) DDR3-SDRAM-1333
AMD Radeon™ HD 6630M (1GB VRAM)

I don't really expect to tun anything on high, and I'm not really a graphics whore. What can I expect to play?
Do you guys think I'll be able to run Battlefield 3 on low?

Also, do I need more RAM? I didn't think 6GB or 8GB was necessary.

1. You'll be able to play any game you please, at some level.

2. Yes, you'll be able to play BF3, at some level.

3. 4GB is more than enough.

4. How much did that cost?

edit: whioa the 2620M was an extra $250? Totally not worth it.

Alrigh,thank you!
Also: $1,600.00

For a flat $1k, you can do no better.
Mr.Swag said:
For real? It was more like $204 because of education price.
So does i7 not add much?
Look at it this way:

i7-2620M = 2.7Ghz, Turbo Boost = 3.2Ghz, 4MB L3 cache

i5-2520M = 2.5Ghz, Turbo Boost = 3.0Ghz, 3MB L3 cache

So all you're paying for is a less than 10% clock increase, and 1MB of L3.

Waste. Of. Money. Buy an SSD or something, just don't burn it on the CPU.

Yeah, it's really annoying that Intel made i7s with two cores. :/

Can anyone recommend a nice bag for a 17 inch laptop? Something that doesn't look like a bag my father would use would be great.

gaming bags? messenger bags? backpacks?

try Slappa, Targus, Astro, Everki, Crumpler, Oakley, Belkin, Mobile Edge, Wenger/Swiss Army/Victorinox, ThinkGeek, Case Logic, Timbuk2, Dakine..etc

Looking to buy the G970X.
The processor i chose was the defealt Intel i7 950 Quad core with HT 3.06Ghz 8MB chache.
8 GB ram which i hope is enough for gaming.
The graphic cards is where i'm having trouble deciding.
It's either the 2x GTX485M 2GB GDDR5 or the 315£ more expensive 2X GTX580 2GB GDDR5.
There doesn't seem to be that big of a performance boost between the 485 to 580, atleast not enough to justify the huge difference in price.

So what's everyone's thoughts on service plans and whatnot? I'm considering buying my girlfriend a VAIO as a combo birthday/christmas gift and it's gonna suck if she cracks the screen and it's not covered.

I am going to buy a laptop very soon. I'm not really a PC gamer, but I would like to buy a laptop capable of playing a few games. I imagine Source games like Portal 2 would run on nearly any new computer. How much would a new laptop cost that would run the first Witcher? And would it cost more to run Skyrim? I don't care about Max settings or anything. As long as it would be playable. I don't have much of a budget right now. I am just hoping to get a laptop that can play some of the games I would be interested in.

GAF I need ur help:

I'm currently in the market for a new windows based laptop primarily for programming. I probably won't be doing much 3D but I want to at least be ready for it if I decide to do some Kinect stuff and whatnot. I also might want to run a game here or there.

I'm a guy who knows jack shit about hardware and whatnot since I'm always a bit more concerned about the software I'm running.

I'm semi on a budget (hoping for nothing over $700 but I know it might cost me), I don't need a monster powerhouse (maybe I do since I wear the shit out of my MacBook Pro with 25 programs open at once multitasking >_< ), plus if I can avoid all the flashy shit like glowing weird lights or strange builds that would be a plus.

In advance thanks. I'm also in the market for an external HDD just to clean out my MacBook Pro if anyone knows of anything ^_^

how is the m17x as a desktop replacement? As in turned on 24/7? Also I probably won't be buying a laptop for about 3-6 months, so is there anything as slick as the m17x coming out soon?

Hey everyone, I know nothing about computers but I want to get a laptop with a 15" screen that is good enough to emulate Dragon Quest V on PS2 perfectly for $500. Battery life isn't a big deal. Can I do it? The one in the OP seems to be $600 at Amazon for an 11" screen but it's probably more powerful than what I need, right?

No one's answering anyone's questions but I hope this gets a response!

Read through this forum before you give money to Kobalt. And I have more complaints I could bring up.

Why not buy an Alienware M18x with Crossfire 6990M?

I tend to stick to one year, but I don't keep mine for very long anyway.

It all depends on who it's being bought for, and their habits.

It's a great choice. But in 6 months who knows what we'll see. Definitely Intel's new CPUs, and AMD/Nvidia won't be far from delivering the newest mobile GPU lines.

this should do

The E-350 processor performs like absolute trash. It won'e emulate PS2 games any way but horribly.

Really, an i5 would be ideal. The graphics cards in this range aren't that great for it either.

Gotcha, like I said, I don't know jack shit about this kinda stuff! All I want to do is play PS2 games and browse the internet all day if needed.

So is the A-series processor in that Best Buy ASUS also too weak for me?

Hey Jack, thanks for the response.
I checked out the link you gave me. Yeah, i really don't want to order from Kobalt now.
I compared both specs/price of the laptops i'm looking to buy and the kobalt comes out a little cheaper with a better cpu and double the ram(4-8).
cpu: Alienware= i7 2630QM 2.0ghz 6MB
G970X 17.3= i7 950 quad core with HT 3.06ghz 8MB

gpu: Alienware= 6990 crossfire
G970X= 485sli(much cheaper then 580sli)
