Friend of my bought a Medion laptop, for the high specs + shit brand (thus good price)

Any comments on Medion? :p

I think it was this one

Edit: probably will overclock the 525M to 550M speeds. 525M, 540M, and 550M are all the same card clocked differently, and th 525M is typically for 15" laptops (mine's 17")

How true is this? I'm aware of same chipset or whatever (I think) but would the 540 run at 550 clock speeds without any trouble? Might have to consider it in a year when my laptop feels too outdated. :p

Jack recommended ProStar back in June for me so that's what I'm going with. I was thinking of going with this setup:

Memory 12GB, PC3-12800/1600Mhz DDR3 - 3 x 4GB 1
Graphic Cards NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M w/1.5GB GDDR5

Is that not a good idea? Is there a huge difference between the GTX 560 and 580. How many years of good quality gaming in a 2GB GTX 580? What about the 1.5 GTX 560?

So I've got a bit of a situation on my hands. I'm in the UK and I've been trying to get an Asus G Series G53SW-XN1 for the best part of a month off a website called pickrice.com and it's just been one problem after another, so I've finally thrown in the towel there.

I'm currently in Manchester at University but I'm visiting London next weekend and it would be hugely helpful if I could get a laptop delivered by then so I can transfer things from my home pc. I've been looking around some UK websites but I can't find it anywhere else.

If someone could recommend me a similarly powerful laptop for £750 max that could be delivered within a week I would be eternally grateful
Is that with VAT included?

doesn't Medion rebrand MSI notebooks? That looks like a very decent machine.

1. What's the rest of the system specs?
2. What's the cost?
3. There is indeed a huge difference between the 560M and 580M. In desktop terms, the 560M is about the speed of the GTS 450, while the 580M is a downclocked GTX 560 Ti. Even two 560Ms are just barely faster than a single 580M. That said, the 580M is a terrible choice, from a price to performance standpoint. The 6990M is as fast/faster than the 580M, at a significantly lower price point. If you're going to upgrade, you should seriously consider the AMD chip.

can anyone tell me what is the better deal between these two laptops...

or should I just get a i5/HD3000 laptop for $449-$599

It's literally the same exact system, except you have to choose between 15 and 17 inches, and one has more RAM. Just decide which size you want,, then buy that one.

The 6620G destroys the Intel 3000 by a factor of two, so I wouldn't choose the latter if you want to do some gaming.

thankx for the response....

the HP one seems like it doesn't have dedicated ram/card? for the GPU.....where as the Gateway one has 512mb apparently, along with the already build in GPU....if I'm reading that correctly.

I read for gaming its better in some situations to disable the built in GPU, if there is a dedicated one there.

also, how important will USB 3.0 ports be in a couple of years?

again thankx for the response...

I'm doing some research, and I can't find any indication that there's two different versions of the 6620G. It's an integrated part of the Fusion APU. When I read the two lines, it's like they say the same thing, but not in the same way.

USB 3.0 is awesome, if you have an external 3.0 HDD. Data back ups are incredibly fast.

Yes it is. I'm really frustrated that there seems to be no way of getting a G53SW-XN1 in the UK, it was perfect for my needs.

These were the best two laptops I've scoped out on amazon:

Acer Aspire 5750G

A second hand yet apparently in like new condition Toshiba Satellite P750

I'm more inclined towards the acer, however am I right in assuming if I want dolphin or similarly straining games on it i'd have to invest in the extra 4gb of ram? I've never messed with laptops or computers before; is it something that can be done fairly easily?

My friend's GF wants a new laptop for photoshop/google sketchup. Their budget is about €700 but they can go higher if needed.

Any recommendations?

EDIT: Oh and it has to be 15'' or smaller with preferably a decent battery life.

May i suggest a 3rd option, which i just came across? Check this out. Upgrade it to the i7-2670QM quad core and 4GB RAM, and you're sitting at exactly £750.00 shipped.

I've never heard anyone say you need loads of RAM to run Dolphin, and no game that's out today uses even close to 4GB @ 1080p.

tarius1210 said:

I kid you not. I forgot to mention that the 6990M is a downclocked desktop 6870, and it can be overclocked back up to 6870 speeds.

So is my setup good? What about the RAM? 12GB...1300mhz vs 1600mhz.

Again, this is going to be strictly a gaming PC. I have another laptop and an iPad for web surfing...a desktop as a dedicated HTPC.

The 2630QM doesn't support 1600MHz anyway, so you'll either need to upgrade to the 2760QM or just go with 1333MHz modules.

Great, so I'm all set now:

Screen - 15.6" 1920 x 1080 Full HD (16:9) LED Backlit Glare Type Display, Super-Wide Viewing Angles
CPU - Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor, 2.0 GHz (Max Turbo Frequency 2.8GHz), 6MB Smart Cache

Operating System - Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit
Optical Drive - 8X Max. DVD±R/RW Writer/Reader / 4X Max. +DL Super-Mulit Drive

Upgraded the graphics card and downgraded on the Optical Drive and screen. The laptop will be hooked up to my monitor so no biggie.

Total Price: $1,559.00

Thanks again K.Jack :)

EDIT: I'll have to change the Hard Drive to 7200rpm.

I would NOT. When you sum up the XA1's reviews on Newegg (2 of 5 average) and Amazon (2.5 average) together, it paints a very bleak picture. The most glaring issue is the power button, which seems to fail for no apparent reason.

It's better to spend the extra $200 for the newest version with GTX 560M, which has had the hardware issue resolved.

Is there really that much of a difference between the XN1 and the XA1? The XN1 has a 4 average on Newegg, and I didn't think there was much of a hardware difference.

All I know, is that not one review of the XNA-1 refresh mentions the power button issue with which the previous gen XA-1 seems to be rampantly afflicted. Something was changed in between there.

Hey guys, new to the thread.

I'm looking to purchase a laptop, and I'd like it to be able to run some older games, (HL2, WoW, Oblivion) current stuff certainly isn't a big deal to me. My budget is right around 500 or so, and here's what I've found:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215113

Will it run said older stuff and is it a decent value for the price? I'm pretty clueless here so any help would be great!

Thanks!
This offers much higher graphics performance, within the same price range, assuming you can afford the extra ~$50.

Bought here.

And now I feel bad because I forgot I have a VIP code which will give an extra $50 off.

K.Jack, do you think the 6990M will hold it up for most games? I need a good gaming laptop to use for 2 years more or less.

Who bought it? You? If so, could you please explain about battery life, power consumption and heat during heavy loads?

The 6990M is a slightly downclocked 6870, and can be overclocked to mostly make up the difference. So check out 6870 reviews to get an idea of its potential. High settings @ 1080p for two years is going to happen.

I don't have one (I have the 17" big brother). but I can tell you that the P150HM gets around 3 hours of battery life, power consumption is high because of the 100W GPU + 45W CPU, and under load the GPU/CPU temps won't get higher than the mid-80s.

Just purchased an Alienware MX 11 R3.

I can't believe this little thing can play Mass Effect 2 on high settings! Blows the console version away :D

The m11x R1 from almost 2 years ago can do that ;-) the R3 can do so, so much more.

I'm interested to see how well the R3 runs Battlefield 3.

New Vaio Z is coming in Tuesday.

Realistically what kind of games can I expect to play on this machine?

256GB (128GB x2) solid state drive with RAID 0
Intel® Core™ i7-2620M processor (2.70GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 3.40GHz
8GB (4GB x2 fixed onboard) DDR3-SDRAM-1333
Power Media Dock™ with AMD Radeon™ HD 6650M (1GB) graphics

Macbook owner here, meaning I know next to nothing about graphics cards. What should I be looking for in a new laptop that can pretty much handle whatever? I honestly don't know the difference between them- it's all just meaningless names and numbers to me. I'm going to mostly be playing Minecraft and Terraria, but I definitely want something that will easily handle TF2, L4D, Portal 2 etc. and possibly future games of similar caliber.

Since Pro-Star does not accept non-USA credit cards (I'm brazilian), I have no other option than Malibal (if someone knows about any other store like Malibal, please tell me). So, I think I'm all set:

Satori P170HM (P170HM)

I'm an universitary student and I'm looking to replace my HP550 laptop (too heavy and my battery died) with a Netbook.

I live in Italy and I have 300€ ( ~420$) as budget, any suggestions?

I have zero knowledge, in GAF I trust.

Hey guys

My dad just told me he bought the ASUS N53SV from his work (He works at Intel) for a little less than $300

He told me the resolution is 1366&366 and there's (I think it extended) 8GB RAM

I did a simple Google search and there's seem to be a couple of different variations of this model? or am I wrong?

Is this laptop good for gaming? Can it run modern games? I think the video card is Nvidia 540M

How is it in general as a laptop?

Edit: The processor is apparentlyT i7-2820QM

Well if you want to do any gaming I can tell you thats unlikely to be good enough, but try this laptop: Acer 15.6" HD LCD Aspire

See if it first your budget at your local retailer.

What do you want to do with it? Take it to university so documents, web, etc. Gaming? That's gonna prove difficult with the budget.

He'a looking for a netbook sirs. Gaming clearly isn't on the priority list.

I have no netbook recommendations. They're all the same to me.

That's the steal of the century. Outside of BF3 and Witcher 2, you'll run nearly every games at 720p in a better state than the HD consoles.

Hey guys. Looking into buying a laptop but for my job duties, I'd love a convertible laptop. I'm currently running a TouchSmart tx2 with a AMD RM-74 and a Radeon 3200 HD.

I'm looking at upgrading to the TM2, which has a Radeon 4550, although the CPU would have to be upgraded in the near future to maintain decent game performance, at the least. I also see the Gigabyte 1125N which has a GeForce 310, and both net around the same performance in games.

Are there any better convertible laptops out there for running games?

Are you buying another macbook to play games or do you want a pc ?

Whats your budget ?

No suggestions whatsoever? I mean: what's better an Atom, Ion or a Fusion core?
Is there anykind of breakthrough coming in the next months (i.e. new processors/ram, more powerful graphic cards, etc.) so that I should wait (i.e. Cedar Trail)?

I know nothing :|

Netbooks are all that rubbish?

(I'm not looking for a gaming netbook)

Can anyone give me some tips on how to make this laptop good enough to run some games? I would really appreciate it. Here are the specs:

HP Pavilion DV6 Notebook
Processor: AMD A6-3400M APU with Radeon HD graphics 1.40 GHz
RAM:6 GB
500 GB Hard Drive

Damn how long ago was that?

Anyway, while I look for something else, does your emu software use 4 cores or just two?

Haha two months, I kept checking deals intermittently but my current laptop is literally on its deathbed now so I just need to bite the bullet on something ASAP. Too bad I'll miss out on potential Black Friday stuff.

I think PCSX2 is the only good one right? I remember at some point it was 2 core only but apparently there was some recent update to take advantage of more? I think 2 cores would probably be fine though.

Cool. I haven't tried it but I've read that the R2 can't even manage Battlefield 3 at the rock-bottom lowest settings and 1024x600 resolution. Sad :-(

I think this is the one.

The good thing about the latest AMD quads is that all of them have unlocked multipliers, so you can easily overclock the CPU. Plus the GPU is faster than the one in the laptop you were originally going to buy.

Awesome thanks! Found it on amazon so I think I'll get it there to save a little more cash.

I'm looking into buying a new laptop soon, maybe around Black Friday if a good deal shows up. Shooting for something that can run Civ V and in the future Diablo III, willing to spend around $1500 give or take a bit. Any specific laptops I should look into? Or at least some specs I should try to shoot for? I'm not exactly a huge computer buff so any help would be appreciated.

I've played Diablo III beta without any game breaking hiccups on my hp dv6-6030ew.
The graphics is Radeon 6770M, which is not half bad, and you can switch to integrated graphics if you aren't playing, which saves power and generates much less heat.
Necessity of buying a cooling pad for a few hours gaming sessions is a con, but you can just put it on something thick, like I do.
