Well, since mine shipped on May 24th it has said that the delivery date would be June 2nd, but to my shock I woke up today to find that it has already made it to my area, and is on the delivery truck right this second. What perfect timing to be able to get it for the long weekend!

Dv7>Base configuration (customize and buy)>GPU>6770. There is now a 2gb version of the 6770, someone else can tell you if it's worth the upgrade over the 1gb version.

Ah, Its defaulting your view to the US - Im in the UK, and have no such option, unfortunately.

I still think the configuration I have will be more than good enough :) Thank you.

Sony Vaio SA is up on sonystyle.com (us site).

So the internals are like SB, but the body is not from plastic but from carbon fibre like Vaio Z. It also boosts a 1600x resolution display. at 2500 USD the price is also more reasonable than Vaio Z who was at 4000 USD when shit really got intense.

Ahhhh need help before i buy this Lenovo ideapad. Will an i3-2310m be fast enough to run Witcher 2? I always hear that the GPU is the main choke point in laptops. My options are:

14'', i3-2310m, 550m GPU

15.6'' i3-2310m, 555m GPU

Will the 555m be worth getting the 15.6'' laptop for if the processors are still the same or will the processor drag the 555 down?

I say no. In 2011+, accepting anything less than an i7 quad is out of the question.

Ordered a Thinkpad T420 with an i5 2520, 4GB Ram, and the 1600x900 screen.

Not really a gaming laptop since I will be stuck with the Intel HD 3000, but then again I didn't intend to do much gaming on it anyway. The build quality on Thinkpads is so nice, I wish you could buy a quality business grade laptop with a good gaming GPU.

As long as I can run some Minecraft I'll be good. I'll leave the intense games for my desktop anyway.

Anyone have experience gaming on an HD 3000? I know it can run Source engine games, and some more recent stuff on low settings.

these two laptops are pretty much my compromise systems instead of getting a laptop with just the intel hd 3000 integrated graphics

$500 for intel HD 3000 laptops

$650-700 for i3/550m 14'' or i3/555m 15.6''

$900-$1000 for an i7 hp dv6t or an ideapad with i7/555m

i3/550m should at least let me play a higher tier of games than the intel hd 3000 only lapops.

I've been looking at this site a ton lately, here's the notebook check page for intel hd 3000. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-3000.37948.0.html

With the MEMORIAL25 coupon, you get 25% off the DV6 Quad Edition.

This is with free 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, and Blu-ray.

$881.24, free shipping. How can you pass?

I don't think i could spend that much money and resist getting the 1080p screen for another hundred ( when the 30% off coupon rolls around again) and then i've spent even moreeeeeeee and an hp laptop with a one year warranty. Buying things......if only everything were free.

I still have to wait for buy.com to give me a refund from my wonky hp probook, maybe HP will offer a free upgrade to the HD screen instead of blu ray/8GBs which i don't care about Xo

Just put in my order for a new Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E420. $650 all told, more then I wanted to spend. But fuck me if that's not a great price for a second-gen i5. Would have been even better if I didn't get stuck paying NY tax.

Damn I'm looking forward to getting this.

wow. The coupon dies monday night right? I want to jump on this so fucking bad right now, but feel compelled to tell my mother before i jump on this so she isnt disappointed in me for blowing a significant portion of my savings on this. She knew i was looking for one though.

To elaborate on my purchase of a P150HM through Pro-Star: When the guy called to confirm the purchase last Thursday, he also informed me that the GTX 460M that I had purchased would be upgraded to a 560M automatically! But then he told me to keep it a secret since it hadn't been announced yet (I guess within a Clevo build?). Well, I see a bunch of news stories today so I guess the embargo has ended, and hopefully it's OK to mention here for those interested. Definitely a little bonus to have a card with (reportedly) a 15% or so speed boost over the 460M, and at the same price to boot.

It sounds like the P150HM won't support the Optimus technology, though, so no great battery improvement to be expected :(

There's been 30% off coupons for awhile now, chances are if you miss this deal there will be another, though they might switch up what free upgrades they will include.

See if you can switch out the 560M for a 6970M: 6970M should still be much faster and even cheaper than a 560M.

I have a T410 and that thing is just plain awesome. Not exactly what I call a gaming machine but a top notch laptop nonetheless.

560M is $245 cheaper than the 6970M.

So it looks like I'll be ordering a laptop from XoticPC.com, thanks very much for the link K.Jack, never heard of that site before now :)

Going to go with the 560M, but in terms of the CPU, what should I know?

Seems like to Core i7-2630QM is beastly enough to handle most foreseeable games within the next 3-4 years.. Is there any reason to upgrade to an even better processor? Here are my options, with associated price bumps in brackets:

-2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM, 2.0-2.8GHz, (32nm, 6MB L3 cache)
-2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM, 2.2-3.3GHz, (32nm, 6MB L3 cache) ( + 160 )
-2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-2820QM, 2.3-3.4GHz, (32nm, 8MB L3 cache) ( + 350 )
-2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-2920XM, 2.5-3.5GHz, (32nm, 8MB L3 cache) ( + 870 )

Thanks in advance!

bought my laptop from xoticpc

I LOVE their no dead pixel guarantee, on Asus model they guarantee for a year ZERO bad pixels. When I asked them about it they said they gave 4 seperate engineers all check the screen before shipping.

edit - you pay extra for the zero bad pixel guarantee BTW

For gaming purposes the 2630m should do you fine.

Kind of suprised it is +$285 to upgrade to the 6970m....

The price increase makes sense, when you consider that the 6970M is almost as fast as two GTX 460Ms. AMD just doesn't have a budget chip anymore, after the death of 5870M.

BTW, GTX 560M vs. GTX 460M:

GTX_560M.jpg
GTX_460M.jpg

It's GF116 vs. GF106. The 560M is a more efficient, cheaper core. There's probably a 10% increase in performance, but the 6970M is still quite far from its grasp..

Ugh, quite the oversight on my part.

XoticPC.com ships from US. Big no go for a Canadian myself.. The potential hassles and extra charges are worrisome.. And that's even before considering warranty replacement.

So, went back to Newegg.ca and found this: MSI GT683R-242US Notebook Intel Core i7 2630QM(2.00GHz) 15.6" 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but this one seems new? Haven't seen it mentioned in this thread yet.

Price seems right, and it looks like it gives the G53 a solid run for its money. Has similar specs to the Clevo P150HM. How's MSI reputation these days?

Thanks for the info. I like that "Technology: Unknown" for the 560M. Alien tech FTW ;)

Would you expect any improvement in power consumption for the 560M over the 460M?

Looks like it's brand new - I think it actually starts shipping tomorrow. I was all set to order an Asus G53SW but it from reading user feedback on Newegg is sounds like a good portion of customers are receiving DOA machines from the latest shipment. Not something I really want to deal with. The MSI GT683R seems like a nice alternative. I'll wait and see how the user reviews turn out. I prefer the more subdued aesthetics of Asus machines, but at least you can turn off the stupid case lights on the MSI.

Here's an unboxing video of the MSI 683R:

The only processor worth getting for gaming is the 2630QM, everything else is a waste.

For reference, the 2630QM is about as fast as a 1st gen Core i7 desktop CPU @ 3.5 Ghz. Also, the 1st gen i7 mobile 920XM processor, even when pushed to 3.5 Ghz, is still slower than the 2630QM. The 2630QM is an absolute beast.

Sure it can't be overclocked, but at this point there's absolutely no need to overclock it. Plus due to SB's architecture, overclocking doesn't really work via BCLK and it has a locked down multiplier.

I'm telling you now, buying the 560M is a complete waste when for a little bit more you can get the 6970M. The 560M looks like it's literally just going to be an overclocked 460M; you can overclock a 460M yourself, and since the 5870M is already faster than a 460M, why settle for less? The 6970M is at least 30-40% faster than the 560M. If you're willing to spend money upgrading the processor, why not spend money upgrading the most important part of your gaming performance: the GPU?

Hope that helps.

Great info, thanks very much.

I'll take another look at the GPU as well. I've just had really really bad experiences with desktop AMDATI products so I'm extremely hesitant to give them another chance.. But I'll reevaluate :)

I'm looking at getting an alienware since I want something fast and I've heard they run pretty quiet, which is a big deal to me (The whining fan noise my asus makes is killing me). Not concerned about paying a premium, unless there's a huge disparity.

Is there anything I should know?

What do you guys think of this machine? Should I be good to go for most games? I have never been a PC gamer, but I think I'll dive in if this machine is up to it. I have missed out on a ton of games over the years.

After coupons, rebates, and various credits I got my following order down to $795/shipped:

HP Pavilion dv7t Quad Edition customizable Notebook PC

• Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

• 1GB GDDR5 Radeon(TM) HD 6770M Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
• FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• 640GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
• No Additional Office Software
• FREE Upgrade to Norton Internet Security(TM) 2011 - 15 Month Subscription (activation required)
• One 6-Cell and One 9-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
• 17.3" diagonal HD+ HP BrightView LED Display (1600 x 900)

• HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone and HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader
• Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN with Wireless Display Support
• Standard Keyboard
• HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

Well, I got this awesome laptop on Friday, and have spent a bit of time on it, although mainly just setting it up and transferring files over.

I'm new to PC gaming, I haven't really played any PC games since Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I know this will be a broad question, but where would be a good place to start to really test this machine out and have some fun? I went ahead and downloaded the demo for Crysis, and played it on whatever the default settings are. I don't even know how to change them to really push it.

What demos should I try out to start with at least? Thanks!

Question:

I have a Toshiba Satelite L650
with:
i5 M430 @ 2.27GHz
4 GB Ram
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
Win7 Prof. 64 Bit

Is it useful to upgrade to 8GB RAM ? For everything, not only games (i use Adobe Illustrator, Vector Works 2011 and other programms frequently). Or is not worth it? (70€ at Amazon atm)

I just wanted to give a shout out to Boobphysics for his recommendation. I had been considering buying a laptop for gaming for a while, and had just started doing some shopping around. I'd probably have stumbled across it on my own while doing research, but the recommendation of the Asus G53SW really helped me get it done quickly because it gave me a great foundation for what to expect from a gaming laptop.

I didn't find anything comparible to the G53SW for the price, so I ended up dropping the cash on it last week and it is pretty phenominal. I'm running Witcher 2 on it on ultra with Ubersampling turned off and it is pulling a pretty awesome framerate on the game, and it looks fantastic. The system does get very hot, but because of how the cooling is designed it doesn't really effect your comfort when it's sitting on your lap, since all of the heating is directed out the back. The only negative repercussion to that is that all of the ports are on the right side. I would actually have preferred them on the left side, and the disc drive to be on the right side, but that is a pretty minor qualm. This is my first gaming laptop, but I have used friends laptops. The right side (I'm assuming the GPU cooling) does get extremely hot, to the extent that touching the back vent while gaming is unpleasant, and there is a bit of warming on the bottom but nothing bad, compared to other laptops I have used. All in all, I recommend it and wanted to say thanks for the recommendation.

More RAM never hurts.

A 2x4GB kit is so cheap these days, why not?

Thanks man, I'm glad you're enjoying your Asus G. They're top notch laptops and I think you'll be very pleased with the experience.

If you're looking for something to really push the system and show off what it can do, I recommend Dirt 3. Great DirectX 11 game that'll play butter-smooth even with everything cranked up.

Also, make sure to check out notebookreview.com's Asus Gaming Laptop forum, everything you'll ever need for your G53SW is in that forum. The user Chastity has a ton of driver resources and links that'll make your laptop run faster and with more stability. Make sure to install the Intel chipset INF as the installer has problems and might not update all of your important chipset drivers.

When do you get the M17X?

M17x should be here in an hour or two. Fedex doesn't deliver to my house until 5-6 PM. Plus I gotta wait around since it requires a signature.

Going to be epic unboxing that monster. What's the highest stable overclock you've gotten on your 6970m?

Hey I've been looking to get a laptop for college and the two I've looking at are the G53 and G73. I'm just wondering if I should go for one of these or wait for the G74.

Go with one of those. The G74 isn't going to be an upgrade in the performance department.

But DAT KEYBOARD. The G74 is freaking sexy.

About my 6970M. My overclock is currently sitting at 830/1050. I could push the core higher, but my memory is pretty much maxed out.

Dell's batch of 6970M uses different memory modules, which can remain stable at higher clocks, somewhere around 1150MHz.

I'm looking for a laptop to be used for gaming (i know very little about what specs are good and would appreciate any help on this) and have a decent battery life (3-5 hours or more) for doing grad school/work like using Microsoft Office or remotely accessing my work computer. I don't mind if it is a little heavy or has big screen as I use a tablet for more portable computing. It shouldn't look too crazy. My budget is between 1500-2000. I would like to play all the modern games (witcher 2, crysis 2, deus ex and diablo in the future) on the best possible setting for my budget. If you guys can also comment on the laptop's stability that would be awesome because my 2 year old thinkpad constantly locks up. Thanks for the help!

Really? I guess I'll shoot for 1100+ on the memory. I'm still installing everything. It's definitely an upgrade over the G73JH though, and the G73JH is an excellent machine, so that's saying a lot. The G73 has a great keyboard but the M17x... wow. Feels perfect. So tactile.

The m17x R3 really is glorious though. For $1282 it was an absolute steal. I'll post unboxing pics in a bit.

I want a laptop that will allow me to play source games and world of warcraft at high settings (no crazy graphic settings), I have an external monitor 1980x1080 that I wish to connect to my laptop, what specs or specific laptops should I be looking for? I would like to spend around $1200 tops

any recommendations?

Are the Asus laptops going to refresh for the 560M? I was thinking about buying the G53SW, but I'd may as well wait if the 460 is going to turn into a 560.

Compare this to the 5870M:

dat bandwidth!

Ok so I finished doing a clean install on my M17x R3.

The thing is FAST. ridiculously fast. With higher settings than my G73JH, it's pulling almost double the framerate in Witcher 2 (55-75 FPS vs 30-45 FPS for the G73). That's ridiculous. Sandy Bridge also blows Clarksfield away: the 2630QM feels and performs much, much faster than the 720qm in my G73. Also, a friend who recently bought an M17x R3 offered to trade me his 2820QM for my 2630QM since he doesn't need the extra power. Sweet.

The design of the machine is extremely impressive: despite being far more powerful than the G73, it's actually slightly lighter and thinner. The screen is even better than the upgraded 1080p panel the G73 had, and the keyboard is fantastic. Easily the best laptop keyboard I've ever used.

The HDMI in and 5 hour battery life are a huge plus to me (portable HDTV AND I can use this thing at school? win/win). The machine is really well put together and designed; I've always disliked Alienware for their overpricing and goofy '1337 gamer' image, but this is actually a really classy, elegant laptop that excels at everything other than being super-portable (it's heavy, but I really don't mind.)

as for overclocking... here's the highest stable overclocks I've been able to achieve. It won't handle 850 mhz on the core, but who knows what the limits for the RAM are...
