I hope so, as I'd love to trade my 6970M in for one.

Compared to the 470M:

GTX 570M has the same clocks, but w/ a 15% increase in shaders, and a higher 256-bit bus width.

I just pray it's more than a paper launch.

what's with people trading ATI for Nvidia (saw similar posts in NBR too)? and isn't Nvidia usually more expensive?

The 6970M has been great. I just prefer Nvidia, but went AMD because their prices were too high. I will only consider the 570M if it's basically the same price as the 6970M. Any more expensive, and I'll just keep what I have.

Anyway, I'm not making any decisions until I know if AMD really has this mythical 6990M coming.

wow talk about fast, the 580m is already available for configuration in the m17x and m18x lol, it's a 600 increase from the base unit, wtf expensive.

its a 350 increase from 6970m with essentially about 10-15% increase in performance.

I'm loving my ProStar/Clevo P150HM so far (thanks again, Laptop-GAF!), but the power brick is really a beast. I would certainly pay a premium for something a little slimmer. Do any 3rd parties offer such a thing, or am I likely to be stuck with this monster due to the power requirements?

Seems like the 580m doesnt offer a particularly impressive increase in performance over the 485 for the price...honestly, I would have prefered the 6970, but I will go with the 485 if they can deliver to me by next week, otherwise I will cancel kobalt

I don't know where else to put this, but:

I'm looking at the a 13" laptop with i3 or i5 or a netbook with an AMD E-350, but I'm hoping it would look like a Toshiba Portege R700 (aesthetically; something sleek and simple, not curvey).

I would grab the R700, but I'm not ready to drop 800 on it. I'm looking at a 500 budget. The laptop/netbook will be used for school work, browsing (opening ~10-15 tabs), and watching HD movies or streaming via Flash.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I am located in Canada.

First, high five.

Sadly there's not much of an alternative to the brick - for your primary power supply anyway. I keep it permanently under my desk, and for travel I use a generic laptop supply that only has about half the power rating of the P150HM's (they're pretty much all 19VDC and compatible). If used carefully, it keeps me going between stints at the desk.

Bear in mind that the massive 10A capacity of the OEM power brick is designed to handle a maximum usage scenario. There are four USB ports capable of supplying 500mA each, so there's 2A that needs to be allowed for. Other biggies are the optical drive, processors (esp. GPU), cooling fans, and LCD backlighting. If you're running all these at full biscuit, you're gonna need the 10 amps. But if you're careful, you can stay charged on a cheaper 5A (90W) power supply. Here are my tips:

- Run on battery until it's drained, then do a quick charge on standby. If you can fit these breaks in, you will put the least strain on the power pack.

If you must run whilst plugged into the wall:

- Keep the LCD brightness down
- Avoid using optical drive
- Don't load up the USB ports. If you're plugging in HDDs, try to use self-powered ones (or super efficient 1.8" drives, or solid state!)
- Be mindful of other ports too - everything you plug in results in some power consumption, in one way or another
- Be aware of which games tax your machine the most (ie. get those fans roaring) and avoid them
- If you're not running an internal SSD, start saving for one. (I'm saving...)

And watch that power pack temperature. It will get warm.

you can try the ASUS ones
http://usa.asus.com/Notebooks/Superior_Mobility/U36JC/#specifications

ASUS has very good build quality and usually sell at an affordable price.

Is it likely that there will be a new batch of laptops coming out in the £1000 range, or is it safe to go for an hp envy (which I assume is the best laptop to go for in that range?)

Does there tend to be a sale towards the end of school holidays as well? If so, do those price laptops tend to go on sale and is it by much?

Edit with more info:

Basically looking for a laptop that is gaming capable (total war, witcher 1 and 2, and crysis 1) at good frame rates (30fps) on at least medium settings, budget is around £1000, but don't want to spend all that if possible.

Would prefer a 17 inch screen, doesn't need blue-ray or 3d, and really would like it to run cool and quiet.

I would hold off for a sec. MSI just announced an updated GT780, which comes with the new GTX 570M.

Here's a comparison:

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h204/killer-ra/random%20nonimportant%20stuff/GTX_500M-1.jpg[/MG]

As you can see, it's a substantial upgrade from the 560M.

Prices are still pending.[/QUOTE]

Oh snap. I had no idea, thanks I guess I'll put the purchase on hold until that upgrade happens.

Hello :) ok so I have been a console/handheld gamer for a very long time, but I want to get into PC gaming. What my question is that I want to buy a laptop that can run all the new games out now. Mind you I know nothing about maximizing framerates and that technical stuff. My budget is $900-$1000. Can someone suggest some laptops within that price range? Also I would like something that can last me awhile. Thank you in advance

Via Endgadget...

Update: An MSI rep has let us know that contrary to earlier reports, the GT780R is not currently available with the 570M graphics card. The company added that it will offer some unspecified laptop with the 570M sometime in the "near" future. It's unclear if that laptop will, in fact, be the GT780R.

HP DV6?

The 6990M is real!

This is the driver page for the P170HM aka Sager NP8170.

Release seems to be semi-imminent.

Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a laptop for school this fall. My main concern isn't gaming, but I would like a machine that can handle games. I'm trying to stay below or around $800.

ASUS U41Jf-A1

and

Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830TG-6431

I was looking at the TimelineX 3830TG as well but the owner's thread on notebookreview is posting huge amounts of cooling issues with all the units. Seems like every single unit has the issue.. Laptops are hitting 70*C during gaming, which is causing heavy game-breaking throttling. Beyond uncomfortably hot.

People in the thread have posted workarounds to avoid the throttling, but then their temps hit 90*C. This will lead to much faster wear on the CPU and a shorter life. And burning hot to the touch.

Shame because it seemed like the *perfect* laptop for me specs-wise. It was nice looking too.

If the difference is 485 to 580, its not that big of a deal really

well, i was thinking it's most likely gonna be reasonable priced, would be a good alternative to 580m.

My Macbook Pro runs pretty hot when I play games and I am looking to do something about it. I was thinking about investing in a laptop cooling pad of some sort.

What do you guys recommend?

looks like some UK sales rep are offering 6990m CF for the m18x, it's priced around £480.00

compared to SLI 580m which is £1,075.00

what?

edit: source from notebookreview m18x forums

Not looking for a gaming laptop, but was hoping to find some feedback here. I'm looking to get an Acer Timeline X (11.6'', i5 1.33 GHz) mainly for web browsing. It's listed at $629.99 on Newegg currently.

Does anyone have this laptop, and have any complaints? I think it's a decent deal.

Hello I'm looking for a laptop with the following requirements (preferably Sandy Bridge) with some gaming capabilities.

Recommended Minimum:

Intel i3, i5, i7 processor or AMD equivalent
4 GB RAM
250GB Hard Drive
USB port(s)
10/100 Ethernet Adapter, WiFi 802.11 b or g
Sound card, and speakers or headphones
1280 by 1024 resolution screen
Printer

I don't know prices but I'm hoping to find one sub 700 in the price range.
I've read that the hp dv6 is probably my best bet, but I'm trying to see what options are available.

I recently picked up a Clevo P150HMB. My specs are as follows:
i7 2720QM 2.2Ghz
8GB DDR3 1333Mhz
60GB SATA3 SSD(OS drive)
500GB 7200RPM(Games Drive)
Nvidia GTX485M
15" 1920x12000LED Screen

I don't have specific FPS rates as of yet, I have been avoiding filling it up with programs I rarely would use. But Starcraft 2 runs like a dream, I havent had a battle yet that caused me to lag.

I installed Crysis 2 and applied the DX11+High Res Textures patches last night. With the settings at 1900x1080 on Extreme I did not get any lag for the ~30mins I played. Tonight I will try it on Ultra(the only option above extreme) and see how it goes, I will also run a program to see FPS so I can update this post.

F.E.A.R 3 runs on max no problems at all, but I dont think this game is really that demanding. Still looks incredible though.

I cant quote prices for US etc, but I purchased this from an online seller in Australia for $1799. I upgraded to the SATA3 SSD and added an extra 4GB of ram bringing my total to $2000.

Should also mention the cooling on this laptop is brilliant. Two large vents on the rear allow the heat from the CPU and GPU to instantly flow out of the system. A two hour session mixed with F.E.A.R3 and Starcraft 2 gave me a max temp of 38'C(Note: this is in Australian winter, it would have been around 12'C outside). Rubberized finish on palm rest prevents you feeling any heat on your wrist etc too.

If there is anything anyone would like to know, or wants me to test just ask.

Phwoar, that sounds brilliant. I'm gonna have to scrounge around to get my budget up considerably I think... Where in Aust did you purchase from, if you don't my asking? $2000 for the SSD seems like a pretty sweet deal, this is the closest I can see, and it would edge over $2k by the time the different upgrades were added.

Urgh. I was just about to pull the trigger, too. Back to the search then, I guess.

You guys are the experts, so I have to ask here, is it true that leaving the battery connected to the laptop when it's already fully charged is bad for its life? I've heard someone saying that but I thought chargers were intelligent enough to isolate the battery if it's fully charged and the AC plug is connected.

I just received my Acer Aspire 1830T-6661 and I decided to do a clean install. Everything went well, except all of my drivers were gone (which is normal)... but I just could not find a way to get Wifi working. It detected the ethernet cable when it was plugged in, but it would not turn wifi on :(

Can someone help me pleaseee :'(

Look online for the wifi drivers? You probably already did this but, hey, stranger things have happened.

I'm looking to get a new laptop for both multimedia and gaming, looking to spend less than $1500, would like to be closer to $1100 if possible.

I'm thinking about this:

Xoticpc Sager HP8130 - $1345

15.6” FHD 16:9 LED Backlit Wide screen (1920x1080) Super Clear Matte Type Screen
2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM, 2.0-2.8GHz, (32nm, 6MB L3 cache)
nVidia GeForce GTX 560M 1,536MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11
8,192MB DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS)
500GB (w/ 4GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid
6X Blu-Ray Read/8X DVDRW Super Multi Combo Drive

-Should I go one step up on the CPU?
-Is the GPU good enough to give me some performance for a year or two?
-Are hybrid SDD/Harddrives worth it?

Is there any other sites/makers/laptops you guys recommend instead?

I bought it from Logical Blue One, its an online store based in Queensland. As far as I know only LBO and another online place called Affordable Laptops sell Clevo in Australia. Im pretty sure you could get these for half the cost in America, but yeah the specs were far better then anything I priced up from Dell and a lower cost.

Note: The SSD SATA3 and the extra RAM I put in myself, much cheaper.

Amazing specs for the price, so much better then Australian prices.

the network controller or w/e can't seem to update the drivers. It appears as an unknown device.

EDIT: I'm going to do another clean install just to see if it helps. Wish me luck :)

On the laptop search for my brother. Am looking for something around or above 15 inches and can play modern games well, but it doesn't need to run Crysis on the highest settings. Anything around $1000 would be great.

elfinke said:
Nice impressions. Now the 'newness' has worn off, what you think of it? What games have you loaded up on it? Do they run satisfactorily?

I've been eyeing one off for sometime now, but have been waiting for a $200 or so price drop, and for my tax return (so in the next month or 2 I hope).

It looks like with the all the new GPU announcements, things might work out in my favour!
In a nutshell: I'm loving it. The most demanding games I've tested (at max or close to max settings) are Crysis (~30FPS), BFBC2 (~45FPS) and Fuel (~55FPS). Fuel in particular gets the fans roaring, whereas they are fairly quiet running Portal 2 at ~60FPS. Mostly I've been enjoying older games like Homeworld and Half Life, reconfiguring them for 1920x1080 and maxing out everything. Playing a bit of Trackmania too, at about a millionFPS.

I have not delved into any overclocking at this stage, and I'm not even sure if I'm on top of driver updates. Still getting used to being a PC gamer, learning when and where to tweak things etc.

I only have a couple of minor complaints. Whoever put the Sleep function key between Mute and Vol Down needs to be keelhauled. I must get around to disabling it - nothing like putting the machine to sleep during a game or an F1 stream. And I find the keyboard itself a little fatiguing for extended used, due to a lack of shock absorption. This is _not_ a problem for gaming and everyday internetting, but I wouldn't want to write a novel on it.

I see you're looking at LBO for the purchase, I can recommend them. I had a single stuck pixel on my screen (bright red), and they replaced the LCD without fuss. Jack from LBO maintains a presence in the notebook section of the Whirlpool forums (there is a Clevo megathread there).

On the whole, I'm one happy Clevo owner and I still get a bit excited every time I fire it up. I will probably upgrade to another Clevo in 12 months or so, ideally another Horize from LBO. By then they'll have god knows what crazy GPUs, and probably backlit keyboards.

I haven't researched in the past month or so, but when I bought my P150HMA from LBO it was the best price I could find - cheaper than buying from the US. A rare win for us lot. :)

In a perfect world, charge circuits are intelligent as you describe. But I don't like to assume that manufacturers have implemented it properly. My rule of thumb would be to leave it plugged in all day while you're using it (if you want to, that is), and unplug it overnight.

Many thanks for that mate, really appreciate it.

I've been haunting the Whirlpool forums for some months now, looking out for promos or deals or announcements of price drops. At $1699, the P150HMB is a tiny bit too much at the moment, so I'm just sitting tight, and waiting. It's a good thing D3 isn't out otherwise I'd explode (though my burgeoning Steam library might just push me over the edge anyway!)

Hey Laptop GAF, I'm looking to get a laptop with a budget of around $700, more or less--no more than 1k, though.

I need a decent screen size (so I guess 15-19"?), and a vertical resolution that is above 1k px (so I guess 1920x1080 and whatever's immediately below that).

I plan on getting some sort of Cintiq tablet somewhere down the line to use with this, so I definitely need some sort of external 2-screen display video adaptor.

I'm not too concerned hdd-wise, I don't plan on using it to watch and store space-hoggin videos or something. If I were to do that I'll just get an external. I imagine a 320gb (or whatever's cheapest but reasonable) would be nice. Not terribly pressed about SSDs, either.

I really want to use this immediately for graphic-design related work, but also as a solid gaming PC.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, that'd be great.

Sorry if this may be a noobish thing to ask (I'm new to PC gaming) but, based on these specs can anyone tell me where my laptop would fall under when playing Battlefield 3, Skyrim, and any other modern PC games. This is what my laptop has inside:

Intel quuad core i7-2630QM (2.0 Ghz, 6MB L3 Catche) w/Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz
2GB GDDR5 Radeon HD 6770M Graphics card
6GB DDR3 system memory
