Games Industry: Developers are Being Told to not Expect Switch Sucessor to Launch This Fiscal Year (Q1 2025)

If Sony is really releasing a PS5 Pro this Christmas I can see Nintendo delaying the Switch 2 till April and May. No point competing with marketing and mind share over the Christmas period, just sit back build up stock and release it when the inevitable PS5 Pro shortages/scalping is still in full effect.
Neither competes/influences the other like some other people believe they do.

They launch of the Pro won’t affect the Switch 2 and viceversa.

Mario Kart 8 is still ranking in the top 20, so there is really no need for Nintendo to hurry, since they also still sell enough hardware.

Anyway they said they want to produce enough to satisfy demand this time, I think the first Quartal would have been to early to meet this goal. Think back to the switch how long it took to satisfy demand, it’s not like Nintendo can speed up production somehow, so they need time.

They just want to let the switch crush the PS2 sales record before they release the Switch 2 ? Or it was probably planned to release around then ?

I really hope it's in the first half of 2025, but idk anymore.

Also GAF's favorite reporter posted this on Twitter so VGC's piece is probably true.

Regarding Chris Dring's comments in the OP.....

"He went on to say that the people he spoke to hope it will be available in April or May, though nothing definitive has been announced by Nintendo."

Launching a ~2Tflop console in 2025 just means this thing is going to end up in the same relative position OG Switch was performance-wise.

I get that Nintendo doesn't really need a lot of power for it's games but I am not expecting any better AAA support for this than OG Switch had.

Makes sense to me, I’ve been thinking that’d be the plan ever since their lofty 13.5M Switch estimate..

That sounds tough even without a “Switch 2” in the mix.

Did anyone expect it to be any sooner? I thought we all assumed next Spring at the earliest, next fall at the latest.

2025 launch for a console that will be weaker than the already weak (by today's standards) 2020 console generation.

What a time to be alive.

I don't understand comments like this anymore. They made a killing on hardware that was already three years old when the system released. Then they did it previous to that with the Wii. What did keeping up with hardware get them? Not money that's for sure. Honestly at this point I see where they are coming from. The majority of Switch owners aren't hardcore Nintendo fans, or even hardcore gamers you see on forums but just people who enjoy video games. As long as they can tell one object from another they couldn't care less about the hardware in the system.

so mid-end 2025 Nintendo will finally achieve hardware power roughly on par with the Sony/Xbox consoles from ....2014. Awesome............

I expected a March launch like the original Switch. Leaving the platform more than 8 years without a successor would be mistake to me.

I agree. I truly think Nintendo went back and changed some specs last minute to get BC incorporated. I actually had heard from a dev that originally, they were not expecting BC at all. Due to how much Nintendo wanted to get major 3rd party titles on board.

Despite, videos from DocTre, and Nintendo Prime and others. I think certain 3rd party titles coming to Switch 2 is a no brainer. Assassins Creed, Resident Evil, PvZ, NBA 2k, FIFA 2k, EA FC all feel like absolute locks. We already know COD has been confirmed. Street Fighter, Persona, Mortal Kombat, Madden, Dead Rising, Metal Gear, and Monster Hunter feel like as close as a lock as possible.

I also personally think Nintendo is fine with Switch 2 launching slightly closer to Xbox Handheld, and probably within a year of Steam Deck 2, and Sony PSP3 handheld (rumored). (But it seems highly likely, imo). The reason is it will ensure major ports across all platforms.

I do question Nintendo’s logic but, if it is indeed to include BC, then it is probably a correct move. My only question is how much could a worldwide recession may make Nintendo regret this choice.

Hardware sales for Switch are in a state of noticeable decline, and since they only have one active platform at a time now, the window of opportunity to hit that "sweet spot" where they don't introduce a new platform (at a low margin) that cannibalizes current Switch family systems too much, but release it before Switch sales get too low, and their business dries up. They will want to time that as perfectly as they can.

Furukawa only said the Switch 2 announcement was coming this fiscal year, not the launch. My guess would be February/March announcement and May/June launch, as modern Nintendo seems to prefer a shorter turnaround between announcement and launch.

Other handheld devices (Deck, Ally, Apple) don't do much better. This is just where things are at with current tech.

I've heard PS4 Pro more recently from all the various leaks/rumors, which would be 2016, *and also pretty beefy for a handheld running on a battery.

What sales level is "enough hardware" for you?

I'd say both backwards compatability and third party support are going to be very important to the success of Switch 2. I agree with you that a lot of those franchises feel like locks for the platform, but the more Nintendo waits the more they will miss out on.

To me the sweet spot would have been this holiday season, would have really helped them with their third party support. Plus it would have kept their hardware sale over 16 million for the year.

Buy it second hand. 300€ + for a new machine released in 2017 is nuts

Hate to break it to you, but I pre-ordered it way back in the annals of history.

I have the disposable income to spend money on things I find fun.

I agree about the more they miss out on, if they wait too long. I think more importantly though, is important for Nintendo to “check boxes” so to speak with 3rd parties and also 2nd/3rd party exclusives.

Nintendo obviously needs the sports games, COD, Minecraft, Roblox (if possible), Monster Hunter and certain IP (like Marvel, Star Wars, etc.)

I think it would be wise for Nintendo to consider money-hatting certain IP that would be unique such as a new Tecmo Bowl, Ridge Racer, and maybe consider giving their own first party IP to other companies to make games for them. For example…ask EA to make a new 1080 Snowboarding.

Nintendo doubled down on Warrior Games this gen, and should spread the wealth more. Even though MUA3, Astral Chain, Mario Sonic Olympics, and Starlink didn’t sell the way Nintendo wanted, I think they should keep trying this strategy. Again, I would look at Tecmo Bowl, Ridge Racer (HD Remake), and maybe something like 1080 Snowboarding, or maybe a Goldeneye collection. Things of that nature, will sell Well, imo.

Sorry, let me be very precise about what I mean: why the fuck should Nintendo pursue high end tech when the market has repeatedly shown it's not interested in it? With the Switch soon becoming the best selling gaming hardware EVER and the most popular games in the world being stuff you could run on a toaster, there's incredibly little incentive for Nintendo to do anything but a convenient hardware that allows their games to look cool in it.

I'm probably talking out my ass, but I'm getting less and less interested in Switch 2 at launch. They missed the boat for taking the money I've spent on Steam Deck and I just got a Legion GO this past weekend. Oh I'll still get it, but if it's just a 'beefier' Switch....I've already got those ( albeit they don't play Nintendo games legally), but I've converted to PC in the past decade and bespoke consoles with locked OS and no ability to tinker natively is boring to me now. It's why both my Switch OLED and Series X are collecting dust and I haven't bothered with PS5 yet( though, I can see myself selling the X soon and replacing it with PS5 Pro. My Legion Go/Deck takes care of how I PC game nowadays).

I'm sure it will still have plenty of stellar looking games and if the current Switch is of any indication, the system will be portable and have options not available on the traditional consoles.

I used to be a graphics whore and I'm definitely a tech geek but we've gotten to the point where it doesn't matter as much.

I'm still expecting Samsung 8nm so I'm keeping my expectations in check. Once clocks are leaked I think Switch 2 will wind up being between PS4 and Pro in terms of Flops, but the architectures being so different and having DLSS, more RAM and a faster CPU will let it outperform Pro in some ways while underperforming in others. Looking at that Digital Foundry 3TF RTX 2050 video, for example, they had some games like Control and Cyberpunk running much lower internal resolution than base PS4, but with higher settings, and DLSS brought the output resolution to between PS4 and Pro.
