Games that you just don't understand the appeal of

From this thread I start to see that most people who don't understand the appeal of minecraft literally don't understand what is that one does in minecraft.

It's similar to not seeing the appeal of a giant bin of Legos. It's quite obvious to me what it's all about. Though I suppose there are even kids who would scoff at Legos.

i can understand the appeal of a lot of genres/games i don't like. some people have different expectations and desires out of what they play/consume... shocking.

I was going to say Animal Crossing too.
Conceptually I understand the apeal of slowly working your way up to build a house, renovate building in your towns and buying cosmetic items (I loved The Sims 1 back in the day), but both the customization and grinding minigames aspects of AC look incredibly limited to me.

I find that to be the opposite. When I look at games like the Sims I consider that to be far more limited. What I like about Animal Crossing is that you get to control the character and form bonds with your neighbors as opposed to The Sims which feels like looking into an ant farm and directing commands. Not saying one is right/wrong but the slight difference between the two is what makes them so much more different overall.

I honestly don't see the appeal in SUPER SERIAL DUPER RACING GAMES!
I mean Gran Turismo/Forza. Honestly some of the most bland and generic games I've ever seen/played. It's nowhere near as fun as doing 209MPH around a corner with boost in Burnout.
Burnout = YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Forza = Neeeer- NEEEER-NEEEEEER *slows down* NEEEeeeerr...
*Important note, Forza/Gran Turismo are not terrible games. Dislike does not mean hate.

i guess for me it is the halo series

played halo 3 and reach for a while and still don't understand why this series has all these fans.To me it seems like a rather run-of-the-mill fps with nothing interesting to show.
that being said,i didn't check the multiplayer since my gold subscription expired

...Basically none?

There are plenty of games that don't click with me, but I'm almost always able to accept some answer to the question of "Why does anyone like this?" Very, very rarely do I conclude that a game is actually unlikeable and that all the people who seem to enjoy it are delusional or pulling one over on me.

The finer points of what exactly people like about a game might escape me in some cases, but that tends to make me more curious about the game rather than incredulous or disgusted.
Exactly this.

the multiplayer is why the fan base is so big. not playing the Halo 3 mulitplayer IS missing the point of the game/series. the story is secondary to the experience. a;though Halo Reach and Halo 4 sort of jumped the shark, so no big deal if you didn't enjoy those games, they're mediocre at best and a terrible representation of the original Halo trilogy.

It's similar to not seeing the appeal of a giant bin of Legos. It's quite obvious to me what it's all about. Though I suppose there are even kids who would scoff at Legos.

I had a great time in minecraft once I stopped trying to build things for their shape. It was all about modding npcs and economies into the game. Oh and blowing shit up with dynamite.

Elder Scrolls for me.

Ni no Kuni, played 15 minutes and was bored to tears. Never picked up again

Ni No Kuni was one of my favorites of last year, but I can definitely understand why someone wouldn't like it. JRPGs typically take forever to really get going, but Ni No Kuni was on a whole nother level.

The Legend of Zelda series...
They are so terribly formulaic and boring, the very definition of generic. (Don't shoot me plz, I know that my opinion is very personal and doesn't actually matter, if you like the games I am happy for you because it's something else to enjoy :P)
I tried multiple games in the series and could never stomach or get past the first few hours. They do absolutely nothing for me.

I really don't understand this, not because you don't like it, I just don't see how someone can say the series is generic (formulaic, sure, but so is every series. You can't change too many things, or it feels like a completely different series (see: Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2)).

Zelda is anything but generic though, simply because every game in the series switches things up and tries something new. That can be seen when nobody can really agree on what the best Zelda game is. Some people who love the NES and SNES Zeldas may not like the 3D ones. Some people who love Twilight Princess may not like Wind Waker. Zelda games are incredibly polarizing, and I don't think that would be the case if every game was similar.

i work with kids and sometimes watch them play Minecraft, have to say i loved Legos as a kid and watching them play Minecraft reminded me nothing of Legos. seemed like a very boring and empty sim set in a block world. i zone out everytime i watch footage of the game.

Call of Duty games. Didn't understand even when it was cool to like it. I like some linear scripted shooters but these never resonated with me.

The Elder Scrolls and the Bethesda Fallouts. Massive open worlds with so much to do. None of it is fun.

I played Minecraft for few hours (it was during a trial with one of the Humble Bundles) and thought it was neat but I had my fill. I can understand the appeal to a certain extent but the sheer enormity of its success baffles me.

The perma-death survival genre that has become so popular on PCs as of recently.

Came in to post Animal Crossing. I really don't understand why people like it.

Also, the Lego games. Yeah, cute visual style and all, but I find the gameplay soul-crushingly tedious and repetitive. There is no skill involved, it isn't satisfying on any level unless you have OCD and getting all the blocks and filling up the bar makes you happy. It's a pointless fill in the blanks exercise and it baffles me that anyone over 8 years old can enjoy these.

Dark/Demon Souls - so shitty and frustrating design is deemed "challenging" and "hardcore", which apparently a lot of people eat up.

Minecraft - so I'm supposed to make my own game? Why wouldn't I just use a superior program to do so?

Metal Gear Solid games - nonsensical, convoluted plots and shitty stealth gameplay. No thanks.

MMOs - fetch quests for thousands of hours with randoms on the internet. Who has time for this shit?

Roguelikes. So it's like a high score game with crappy randomized levels? What an awesome premise =/

The Witcher games - nice visuals combined with terrible, unintuitive gameplay. Witcher 2 has probably the worst intro/tutorial section of any game I've ever played.

So you don't under the appeal of a game you know the appeal of?

I worded it poorly. The concept is great, However when it's executed I can't see why someone would want to play that game. It's dull, On paper it sounds fun but in reality your walking around a boring ruined wasteland fighting badly designed monsters and mutants.

I get how some with a big apocalypse fetish might get some kind of kick out of it but It's unappealing in my eyes.

I figured out one. Castlevania: Lords of Shadows. It's a bad castelvania game, a not-so-great character action game and has so many frustrating instances of padding. yuck.

MOBAs. They're mildly fun for 10 minutes and then they get pretty stale. Not sure why people get so addicted to them.

How much of the genre have you even played? Because they're generally infuriating bullshit for MANY HOURS at the start until you learn the mechanics well enough to actually play. Unless you just really like the early laning phase but none of the rest?

I can understand why people could like pretty much anything. Everyone is different.

I have a hard time understanding why there's a strong pull toward the Dragon Age franchise. It seems so generic and bland. Not really anything novel.

Games that creep into becoming their own lifestyle. If you know more about the rules of a MOBA than you do about any other part of the culture, I'd have a really hard time believing you're an interesting human being.

Demon%27s_Souls_Cover.jpg

Boring, and bland. I tried multiple times to get into this game b/c of the GAF love that it receives, but nope.

Atelier games, Tales games, and those hyper dimension art/style of games. I can understand that there are a lot of fans/people that play those games. Just don't know the appeal is. Fan service, Loli looks, I dunno.

a couple years ago I have no idea how anyone would be into Animal Crossing, until farmsville (and all the clones eventually) happened. all of a sudden animal crossing isn't so bad and I kind of get why people would like it, but still does not appeal to me whatsoever.

Farmsville: seriously are people that bored?

dark souls: well I kind of get it, but I don't get how great or fun the combat system is even after playing it, monster hunter is leagues better imo. Almost everything respawning after you died is a huge time sink that is unnecessary if you ask me, I guess it's just not my cup of tea.

The Sims. I just... can't get it. People sink hundreds of hours into these games. I don't get the reward structure, I don't get the objectives, I don't know where the reinforcement comes from. I've had people try to explain it to me and gone nowhere. It is like a singleplayer real life only the nudity is censored. Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing and Farmville all feel riveting to me in comparison.

Every other kind of game people enjoy, even if I hate them personally, I can understand the appeal of clearly. There's just something missing in me when it comes to those.

Tekken - superb art, character design, and entertaining story, the gameplay however was always abysmal in my opinion. I get it, and I can even play it, but when I think about it, how it works and is accepted..... ugh. It's like Tekken is the only car with squares for wheels and everybody loves it.

Little Big Planet- The most humdrum, and least exciting platformer I've ever played been forced to play. The physics feel terrible and outside of those floaty ass jumps the game lacks so much character that no amount customization could make it up for me. Modnation's in the same boat as well.

Binding of Issac
Any first person game with a few exceptions(Mirror's Edge comes to mind but i still didn't enjoy it that much because of the perspective)
Sports games sans Racing, snowboarding, and arcadey ones that don't come out anymore. I miss you EA Sports Big :(
Dwarf Fortress

Mortal Kombat. I still don't get the popularity of this series. The old games look like garbage and there are much better, more interesting fighting games available.

Anything David Jaffe was involved with. Don't understand why he's so beloved around here.

Animal Crossing

It's not that I don't think it's charming or whatever, but I don't get what makes that gameplay loop appealing. You're doing chores. And not even in a clever No More Heroes 2 kind of way.

Souls series in particulair. Whenever I see a post about Souls' oh so deep combat, I roll my eyes to the back of my head (you have to learn delicate and intrinsic enemy patterns hnnng so good). Unlike, you know, every other goddamn action game.

MMOs and MOBAs. Never got them, still don't get them.

Sports simulators (I'd rather play or watch the real thing). I'd like to see stuff like NBA Jam and Blitz again.

Playing any game over 80 hours.

I find nothing wrong with this, and in fact I am very jealous of being able to stick with something for so long.. But I simply can not. There's a point near the 40-60 hour mark where the game is at risk of overstaying its welcome and new games are calling, I literally cant fathom playing one game for more than a month or two. I'm done by then, and only 5% will be replayed in my lifetime, if past experience continues. Yet some of my friends are still playing BF3 AND BF4 AND Diablo II AND WOW. I played those games for a month each. It's very cool to see the value they get from games, but I need to experience new, shiny things!
