GameSpot: Kojima to leave Konami after MGSV, power struggle, communications embargo

that's cool and all but going back and removing his name? Something much bigger happened. For them to punish Kojima when he was pretty much the only man making them money in the games space is absurd.

Seriously Kojima gave them a very good franchise, created a studio in LA they Konami now controls and made the Fox Engine now that Konami controls.

Something happened behind the scenes and now they are just plundering everything the man built.

Ahh right. I keep forgetting that part...

Can someone add the A Hideo Kojima Game to my avatar?

It's never a good thing when people lose their jobs. I hope those affected will recover quickly.

I think Kojima is talented enough to land on his feet. I would love to see him take on the scene independently.

Would be the perfect opportunity for someone like Sony to step in and write Kojima a blank check and let him build an AAA arm of SCEJ

Unbelievably stupid what is currently going on. RIP Konami

It just pisses me off, why can't Konami give Kojima and his team a break from Metal Gear. I mean they worked on this series for fucking 27 years now. Kojima always said yes but of course there comes a time where he's just done with it... he wanted to left the series after MGS2 but he always returned and said ok i'll do another one so that mr. konami is pleased.

Kojima always tried to improve the series. MGSV for example looks to be the most ambitious game ever. They put all their heart into this game and created a fucking new engine for over 5 years now. Opened a new company in LA so they can work on another Metal Gear Online. Troy Baker said "MGSV may be the biggest game I've ever seen." But nooo it's not enough for mr. konami.

Kojima said he sleeps 4 hours a day to be most productive during the day.

The most disgusting and disrespectful thing is the erasing of Kojima's branding of all Metal Gear products.

What a terrible sendoff for someone who made Konami what it is today.

It's so sickening, I don't even know what to say anymore.

Preach, brother.

Well I hope Konami doesn't censor the controversial stuff in TPP. That's what I'm worried about. I'm sure Kojima will land on his feet and will have people all over clamoring to work with him or give him loads of money to work on whatever project he wants.

I just hope Konami leaves TPP as is.

Yeah now we cant really trust anything in the game cause Konami has months left to fuck with it. This is a disaster.

I still can't believe TPP is really going to be the last proper MGS game. I'll never have another adventure with Solid Snake now.

Really curious to see where he goes after this. I'm not fond of the MGS series, frankly, but I do feel Kojima has a distinct voice and style that is relevant and beneficial to the industry. Here's hoping he and his team end up in a better place.

Seems Konami's CEO doesn't really value Kojima's artistic genius. It's unfair of me to judge him until I have more info, however.

yeah, if it really has shit like Big Boss killing children or people getting raped and kojima has no creative control anymore, I doubt it'll stay in.

Is it confirmed, though, that someone is stepping in to "correct" MGSV? The article leaves a lot of questions open.

Power struggles between Kojima Productions and Konami have convinced the publisher to make drastic changes, including amending the employee status of its Metal Gear team.

But what else do these drastic changes include? Did the source skip out on giving the real information?

Kojima being banned from basically associating himself with the game isn't a good sign, though.

If true, I'm at least glad that Kojima and co are now free to pursue other interests. Konami has run everything other than PES and Metal Gear into the ground. Wiping credits too? Wow.

MGS Will sell dude. Fans of the series follow it. This one will sell well into the millions as well.

Did fans of the series just not feel like playing Ground Zeroes very much? If anything I kinda thought GZ was proof that MGS needs a mainstream audience and that its grassroots base of fans is probably not going to be enough.

The drastic changes better not include censorship or I'm losing my composure.

I think many peeople thought back then that we were just months away from TPP release, and many thought that GZ was going to be included in TPP.

Don't want to sound like a bother but can you make the background transparent? Like leave the black behind the caption, but everywhere else transparent.

Thanks either way though!

Sorry it took awhile but I'm not that good at photoshop (I didn't even know JPEGs don't support transparency). I had a shot at it anyway.

Your problem, as with many in this thread, is that you think Konami is primarily a games publisher.

In reality, they're a mobile company with a heavy interest in health clubs and gambling machines that does console games on the side.

It would appear that they're thinking that side business isn't worth it and are refocusing on the core businesses.

That's not what this data necessarily suggests though.

Shows them having a loss in health and fitness in 2014. While digital entertainment is the biggest profit on that list (that consists of mobile games, video games and arcades).

Though digital entertainment profits are shrinking, so are their releases.

I think we can assume this great 'falling out' has happened within the last month or so.

When we were shown the box-art, Hideo Kojima's name was still on the box.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Can't see myself ever buying another Konami game.

But hey, I'll pick up whatever Kojima puts out in a few years.

If Konami are fucking with the game itself, I don't think I will be able to support it. Will actually buy used, and that's something I never do.

To partially wrote the good man Amir0x, Konami "just shoot themselves in the foot..." And leg and stomach and neck and chest and then head.

I'm pretty sure if the game undersells it will just make Konami feel vindicated in their decision. If you want to support Kojima, buy his game that he's spent years working on.

All I'm reading is Kojima and the other higher ups at Kojipro are staying on to finish MGSV and MGO for the fans, but Konami now has full control of all marketing decisions. That includes the what Kojipro staff are allowed to say about the game, as well as all references to Hideo Kojima and the studio. This seems in line with what we've seen, with all Kojipro Twitter accounts remaining silent apart from doing retweets.

Nowhere does that say that Konami are forcing changes to the story, events or other aspects of the game. I'd imagine if they were to do that, many of the staff there would just call it quits rather than help make those changes.

If anything, I'd wager that the maximum extent of any changes would be limited to removing references to Kojima Productions from the game. However, I personally think the scrubbing will be limited to that marketing materials and the game's credit sequences will remain intact with no changes.

I don't really know where you guys are getting the possible censorship and other forced changes from.

Simply put, if Konami were to force major changes to the game:

a) Kojima and co would not be hanging around to help ruin their vision for the game,
b) Konami would not need them to be around to make that happen, they can hand the game off to the KP staff who decide to stay, or some other team to finish.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Kind of surprised. And sad. Also not really that surprised.

No idea what happened but often when something like this does happen, usually the director is demanding some kind of royalty on the backend or trying to claim some form of IP ownership. Management gets spooked and pissed and tried to break association with the director because they invested in the project and demand 100% ownership of the rights and usage of IP.

Because it makes no sense that there'd be such a massive falling out over marketing. A "power struggle" over marketing.

Cutting Kojima's name off the cover and limiting his ability to market the game isn't the core issue, it's a consequence of something deeper.

And r.e. "the staff would just call it quits," remember that Kojima made a speech about "keeping the team as one to make a good game for the fans."

I sure hope that's the case.

Would be great, if they gave Konami the middle finger and just put "A Game by Hideo Kojima" and "Kojima Productions" present subtitles.

I'm playing catch-up from page 30 or so. Anything new? Like, did Konami send out a PR, any Twitter remarks from either party, status on Silent Hills, things like that?

(Also, if someone could add "A Hideo Kojima Game" to Ol' Captain Splatoon here, I'd be grateful.)

Nobody said it was a power struggle over marketing. The marketing is a result of whatever went down. But I wouldn't think that MGSV was the problem.

Again, I don't believe they would allow their vision for the game to be compromised and there may have been an agreement to allow MGSV to be completed.

The power struggle would probably relate to the direction that Hideo, Kojima Productions, and/or Konami Digital Entertainment is heading in the future.

MGSV marketing is just a consequence of it.

It's never enough for these clowns, I just hope the game comes out as intended as the creator envisioned at this point and that everyone lands on their feet.

I would not be the same person if it weren't for Metal Gear and I probably wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for metal gear either.

Yeah that amazing Christmas in 2004? I had spinal meningitis, I was so sick I could barely play MGS3 but I did it anyway because I admired what Hideo Kojima and his team accomplished with the games. He makes me want to create games, and the more I learn about the industry the more I say I want to be indie and take the plunge just to subvert horrible things like this and what Rockstar does.

Hell, what the industry does.
