GAMESPOT reviews Lumines!

Excerpt:

In a perfect world, Lumines wouldn't have been sold separately from Sony's slick, new portable gaming system. But the world is still better off now that Lumines is in it. This ingeniously designed, addictive, mesmerizing puzzle game from the creator of cult classics like Rez and Space Channel 5 may not seem as out-and-out impressive as some other PSP launch titles, but it's liable to be the one you keep coming back to. In fact, between the beautiful presentation, the innovative gameplay, and the excellent single-player and multiplayer modes, Lumines may very well be the greatest Tetris-style puzzle game since Tetris itself.

Nice!!!

9.0

Does it have excellent multiplayer? I seem to remember people less happy with the multiplayer than single player in previous impressions, which I thought was a shame as multiplayer puzzle games are awesome.

Oh fuck yeah, but damn isn't this review early? Then again, I think the media got the game like 2 weeks ago

Then there's Lumines' versus mode, which you can play against a computer opponent or against a friend (who's also got a PSP and a copy of the game) using the PSP's built-in Wi-Fi support. Versus mode adds a very interesting tug-of-war element to the core game by dividing the playing field down the middle into two parts and then forcing the two competing players to try to push the barrier toward their opponent, reducing the amount of room the adversary has to work with, while freeing up more room for themselves. Versus mode is somewhat more passive than competitive modes in some other puzzle games, since you'll invariably focus on your own playing field rather than on what your opponent is up to. However, that's mostly because the fast pace of versus mode doesn't give you time to stress over what your opponent's next move will be, and overall, it makes for an exciting and distinctly different variation on Lumines' primary single-player game.

That's what they said.

Heh. Is it really that good? I mean, really 9.0 worthy? It says it may very well be the best tetris-style game since tetris, but... Tetris Attack was phenomenal.

The guchster is The Man. He's one of the coolest, most friendly and creative game designers/directors I've ever met. I can't wait to see what he does on next-gen systems.

This will be $30, correct? (forgive me, dear Amir0x)

I'm still waiting for all the reviews to come in, but I think I've found my launch title. I wanted MVP + 1 other, but since MVP slipped a few weeks, I was only planning on getting one game.

How many hours of gameplay, approximately? That's a big deciding factor for me. I know Tiger Woods has an insane career mode, but it will also be $50, iirc. Tetris was just magical when I was a wee tike first experiencing the NES.

39.99. :(

Hours of gameplay? This isn't a puzzle game with set levels and once you've beaten them once you'll always be able to do it really quickly right? If it is I've totally not been paying attention.

:does ho down. Lets see if it sells at all in the US. No good if its La Bomba.

It won't need to sell much in order to be successful. Dev costs for this game is pretty low

Please, as much as it will pain this board, Nintendogs will out-sell Lumines by, well, probably a lot.

What the fuck does that mean? Doesn't change the quality of any of the products, that's for damn sure.

Calm down man, I know you saw the chance for an argument and dived in there headfirst, but they're talking about the 9.0 helping sales.

wow.. dare I say thats higher rated (on gamespot) then any DS game thus far?

AND he did Space Channel?
Count me in!

:D

If that was true, then there was absolutely no need to mention Nintendogs. It was irrelevant to whether or not a 9.0 would help Lumines sell better or worse. But thanks for the advice.

No, there wasn't any need to mention Nintendogs. Except that the poster is clearly saying eh expects lower scores for Nintendogs than Lumines, but higher sales for the former. Why he chose Nintendogs specifically...well, who knows?

It still doesn't change the fact that:

"What the fuck does that mean? Doesn't change the quality of any of the products, that's for damn sure."

is way out. It's clear what he means, and he has not mentioned quality, it's about sales, so I don't know what you're responding to with the second bit.

I'm really not going to argue this stupidity with you. Even though your inserting your own meaning over what he intended, it's irrelevant. If the argument was about 9.0 helping or hurting Lumines sales, then discuss why or why not. Nintendogs or any other game has nothing to do with it. You can say "Well, based on historical trends X game did this and Y game did that", but on a game that hasn't even came out yet?

Please. You know exactly what he meant. Now once more, thanks for the advice but I'll continue just fine.

It's not my own meaning, it's his meaning. It's THE meaning.

I don't care what he should have said, or what he didn't say. I care about what he did say, and how your response does not fit with it.

You can carry on saying what he should or shouldn't have said, you can think that that's what I'm trying to say here, but until you understand that I am simply addressing a poor response to a quote, we're not going to get anywhere.

What did I just tell you? What he said had no relevance to the argument you propose he was contributing to, i.e. Lumines 9.0 helping sales. I called it out, because it had only one true purpose. Now enough with the stupidity.

End of debate.

Something that was incorrect.

What he said had no relevance to the argument you propose he was contributing to, i.e. Lumines 9.0 helping sales. I called it out, because it had only one true purpose.

Nah, sorry. You're just being a bit stupid here. Let me explain, point by point, as that's your language:

- People hope the game will sell well.

- People say the game doesn't need to sell that well to be successful because the game's budget is small.

- Someone says they hope the 9.0 will help sales.

- Someone responds by saying that, though GAF won't like it, Nintendogs wil probably outsell it.

How can you not get this? He's saying a game likely to get poorer scores will outsell Lumines. He's saying a high score isn't enough, poorer games can sell better, great games can sell bad.

I mean if he's not saying that, what is he saying? Nothing to do with scores changing the game quality as your response indicated, that's for sure.

Jesus Christ STFU. You are totally killing my buzz. Cry elsewhere.

Go make a thread about how mean Amirox is to people and post there.
