I'm honestly not going to go around in circles with you. It's quite simple: If his intent was the show that games that score lower can still outsell games that score higher, then the only way to do is to show a game that HAS scored lower. But he didn't. Instead, he spoke about Nintendogs, a game that we have no idea how it will be received by the industry. Unless you're slow, there's no way you could possibly conceive that is the best way to argue your point.

There was only one one reason for that. I'll leave out there for you to figure it out. When it hits you finally, or when you take off those shades, we'll talk again.

I would, but it's just so obvious what he saying that I really want him to see it. It drives me insane (see posts) when someone jumps on some innocent remark like that.

This game alone looks better than the entire DS lineup thus far, to me. To be honest though, I could say the same of several of the PSP launch titles, by themselves, which really is a truly sad testament to the current state of the DS. I seriously can't believe how dissapointing the DS has been. Oh well, I think Lumines is inching ever closer as my definite launch title (provided I can find a PSP on launch, damn it)
 
9.0 is an excellent score.... but I actually clicked on this thread expecting better. Not that I'm disappointed, but you guys have been blowing your load over it for months (justified, no doubt). STILL, I WANT
 
Haha, the only reason I picked Nintendogs is because in my eyes the hate its been getting on the boards, which is probably about as equal to the love Lumines gets.
Of course I'm pulling random speculation out of my ass, but its fun sometimes.

Still man, I never brought up the quality of the games, I just think Lumines is going to be another Rez, only fun. :D

Anyway, I don't really think the hate against Nintendogs is strong, or even pervasive. I dislike the concept, and I think me and Drinky have been the only vocal ones...

of course, I don't follow every thread about it as closely as maybe you have :P

Lumines, Mercury, and MGA are my favorite PSP games so far. Original handheld games forever. Advance Wars, Wario Ware, Feel the Magic. Let the consolish games stay on the consoles, where they're better. Heck, even Pokemon, mediocre as it is.

He explained why it's so great, and it looks fun, but I don't think you can convey things like depth and variety in a review like that.
 
Just saw the video. Whoever is playing in those videos has some serious skill. And the various skins rox!
 
Oh god this is only going to make the wait even more unbearable!
Excellent score nonetheless and it is all the better since Ubisoft left the core content intact.
 
I'm not even kidding when I say that if Lumines was the only game that was EVER coming out for the PSP, I would still buy the system. It's that good.
 
Very good. Hopefully I'll be able to get my hands on someone else's PSP to try this (since it'll be a little while before I buy one for myself).
 
The thing about Lumines' challenge mode is that you go through the levels in the same sequence each time, so you'll get very used to seeing the game's first few skins. This isn't really problematic in and of itself, but some kind of a "shuffle" mode would have been nice, as well as consistent with the music-inspired design. Still, you get plenty of other options, such as time trials that challenge you to earn high scores in small amounts of time and the ability to choose to play in any of the skins you've previously unlocked. There's also a pretty entertaining puzzle mode, in which you don't need to worry about forming rectangles, for a change, but must instead make various shapes out of the falling two-toned squares. The puzzle shapes get progressively more complicated, and this mode is a good diversion overall.

Probably to ensure that it doesn't get lost in the launch period shuffle. GS editors are regular videogame fans, too; they probably want to see the game sell well and TM rewarded.

...Or they don't give a fuck and reviewed it first because Q Ent happened to be the first to get final code to them.

Regardless of all the ensuing hooplah, I really have to stamp this with an IAWTP.

Regardless of what critics say about Nintendogs. Assuming the game has any sort of simulative depth to it at all, I really do get a Pokemon-ish vibe from it. The sort of thing that's so goddamn cute and accessible that anyone could get innocently hooked on it. And I've not really thought that about a game since the whole Pokecraze started. Or maybe it's just the final culmination of the whole Tamagotchi thing. I really do wonder how it'll pan out, but if the game's any good at all it will surely outsell Lumines.

Lumines, on the other hand, is a puzzler. And how many puzzle games priced >= $39.99 have ever been commercial successes? I'm doubting there have been any apart from Tetris and Dr. Mario. Every site on earth could give Lumines a 10/10, and most "Sony people" still wouldn't get it.

I'm not trying to turn this into a Nintendogs vs. Lumines post (not that it hasn't already turned into that peripherally), but I do mean to ask you all: is it even possible that Lumines (from the guy who brought you flops like SC5 and Rez) would become a great selling game?

It still seems a tad bit unlikely to me.
 
I think Lumines and Wipeout have sold me on a PSP. Well, that and the future GT4 port, SOCOM, media playback abilities, etc,... :D

Well, one would think Meteos would at least reach his level of interest given the genre and people behind it but maybe Lumines does beat everything on DS. We don't know yet. But between Kirby, Meteos, Nanostray, Famican Wars DS and Castlevnia all to hit DS in the near future his statements will be plainly false.

I find it almost sweet that you've been following me by searching my name on google and on GAF. Endearing, almost. But also creepy! I guess if you have that sort of morbid interest it can only mean one thing, GreenGiant.

That said, it was a nice attempt but I was hardly the one who started the derailing this time.

I guess so, just makes it harder to wait, esp. when they're still willing to score the game a 9.0 after having had the game for a few months now.

This game reminds me of Tetris but with *Great* music. This could be hawt, hawt, hawt.

I still find it strange that my most wanted game on a next gen $250 3D portable system is a puzzle game! Actually, two puzzle games. Mercury and Lumines!
 
Is this and Meteos made by the same developer?

I'm pretty sure I'll get a PSP and Lumines on launch. Consider me a victim of the hype...

The three tunes in Game Boy Tetris are all many, many times greater than every song in Lumines put together. I never want to hear "Shinin" (or whatever it's called) ever again in my life.

I like Lumines, but I'm really, really sick of people who haven't even played it yammering on about how amazing it is.
 
Looks like Ubi didn't fuck with it by changing the skins or the music eh? But then again, no shuffle mode either, right?

Pretty much the only launch game that I'm looking forward to, truely. Possibly Wipeout Pure, but I think they may screw that up. We'll see.

Cannot WAIT for Lumines.

Hopefully GameSpot will have a nice little PSP feature at launch which helps readers get acclimated to the top teir PSP titles and also all their other reviews.

Boo hoo. I'm a fan of techno music. I've watched a ton of videos for Lumines. Tetris music may be more recognizable since everyone has played it but those blips and bleeps are not better than what I have heard in the videos.

I like the widescreen approach for PSP reviews, good idea. I was pretty sad to see that they didn't have atleast a quck 5 second video of the game being played in all it's audio-visual glory. Some of the later tracks get pretty damn awesome with the music and ferocity of the game.

Really good review for those who have no clue about this game, does a good job of explaining it and giving examples of it's depth.

I can`t quite understand how a simple puzzler can get such a high score. But this sounds good for Meteos since it`s made by the same devlopers and that got much better scores in Famitsu than Lumines did.

So Meteos will propably get a 9.5 from Gamespot and make people forget about this simple tetris clone.

I guess I missed when Famitsu became the authority on games, considering they're just another gaming mag.

But hey, since you've obviously spent a considerable amount of time with Lumines, care to enligthen us as to how forming a series of squares is any more simple than arranging blocks in a row? And while you're at it, why having a game with a simple gameplay concept is a bad thing, or how that obviously reflects on the depth and replay value of the title? Becuase, you know, it's not like some of the "simpliest" games are among the deepest and most addictive.
