Gaming GAF, do you judge others by their avatar?

For example, if you go into a thread that's about some bad news about Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft, and you see a person defending them that has an avatar from one of the companies, do you dismiss what they're saying due to potential fanboyism?

I wish I could say that I didn't, but I find myself doing it from time to time. I just want to know if I'm the only one.

I try not to but sometimes the correlation is a bit on the nose.

But I don't think anything of it other than laughing once to myself and then moving on.

Sometimes... it can be a pretty big indicator of their tastes, sense of humour etc. But I don't put a lot of thought into it. Best not to judge others anyway.

No, but I'm not against quoting the avatar for a bit of fun if the post calls for it.

Yes. It's someone's personal choice in how they want to have their public comments represented and a reflection of the person. If you didn't want to be judged by it, you shouldn't choose an avatar.

Not at all and hope people don't with me :) some of the nicest and coolest ppl I've met were from rival teams.

Not really, unless it's an ironic statement that deserves an avatar quote. Then it's more humorous than hostile.

I identify people by avatars but I never really judge them by them. If someone has some creepy avatar or console-specific avatar, I don't know the story behind it, and they could be using it ironically, like kaz ones or underaged girls/furries.

If it's somebody posting in an OT whose avatar is from the game I'll judge they're either an experienced player or slightly obsessed with the game. And assume they can be helpful if I have a question.

Yeah, a person going crazy on that Microsoft dick with a Master Chief avatar is always going to be suspect to me.

I've also noticed a trend between Sony fans and either anime avatars or Soccer avatars. I'm not saying that everyone that is an anime or soccer fan is a Sony fan, just that Sony fans typically have either a Sony-related avatar, an anime avatar, or a soccer avatar.

I judge Gaffers more by their tags. If they're Juniors, I refuse to take their opinions seriously.

Just Kidding.

Well, yeah. That's the image they've chosen to represent themselves. If it's tied to a specific company, it's a fair bet they have a strong affiliation with that specific company. If I used an avatar of a bicycle, you'd probably assume I liked bicycles more than, say, roller skates.

Only if it's a really disturbing (often sexually) or "messed up" (often disgusting) avatar. I don't care if it's a picture of someone that they're defending.

all avatars are about how a person wants you to perceive them. So absolutely, yes, almost always.
There are exceptions though, people without avatars for example

Occasionally. I mean seriously, if you have a Justine Bieber avatar and are flaming someone about liking the WiiU, then it is pretty easy to put 2 and 2 together.

I don't know if anyone has noticed it, but so many peoples' avatars are relevant to their posts. Like a guy says, "I like MGS", or something and you look left and there's Solid Snake. I've seen it happen literally at least 100 times, I can't tell if it's coincidence or what.

I tend to take people with anime girls as avs less seriously. And dudes with random hot chick avatars.

Nothing personal.
I do find the hot chick comment amusing seeing as you have a shiny shirtless muscular man as yours.

For the record there is not one ounce of hostility implied in my post.

Depends on the post in question for me. When what they're saying has a tinge of fanboyism and the avatar can be correlated somehow, then it puts some weight on the assumption.

If someone has an avatar that pertains to a game which they posts something hyperbolic about I take them less seriously...

Street Fighter 4 is the best fighting game of all time.

What avatars?
Oh! I disabled them! Too much color and mess lol.
I always read gaf threads as if its a conversation between 2 people. Never even take a look at the names either.
