Gaming GAF, do you judge others by their avatar?

I hate scary or shocking avatars. There aren't many if them, but I don't want to log in and see a bright disgusting zombie head or anything else made to make me wince. I automatically think the person who uses that type of avatar is an attention addict.

Hard not to in the objectification of women debates when the person you're having a discussion with has some loligirl with anatomically impossibly large breasts about 95% exposed.

Do I judge them? Yes.
I also judge them based on the content of their posts.

I try to picture the people's voice based on their avatars

·_________·

I do this with some people. I read everything TheExodu5 says in "L". It fits eerily well because everything he says is always intelligent collected and presented.

I honestly try not to, as i tend to switch avatars quite frequently. But sometimes console ones with a specific tag combination will lead me to believe that individual has a bias.

Depends on the situation,

Halo avatar - Lol you play Killzone and Uncharted? Play games for men instead.

Kratos avatar - Halo and Gears of War are terrible games.

It's hard to overlook things like that.

When I used to have an avatar of The Heartsdales, people sent me kind of creepy PMs asking who the attractive ladies were in my avatar.

Since then I just stuck with Conan.

I imagine that that post I'm reading is being said by the person in their avatar.

I tend to do this too.

But ultimately, I don't use an avatar to dismiss anything. An avatar does "tell" something about the user though, if on a superficial level.

I only judge them if they're poorly made. Cropping an image and not fucking with the aspect ratio can't be that hard.
If I used an avatar of a bicycle, you'd probably assume I liked bicycles more than, say, roller skates.

What do you have against roller skates?!?

Only those with underage anime girls and Final Fantasy crap.

Anything else gets a pass.

Come at me bro's

I always read posts as though the avatar is saying them. It's surprisingly on the mark for telling how a person is.

What is wrong with you people!!?!?!

Only if it's a hot chick avatar.

If it's a disturbing image I will sometimes not even read the post.

edit: I also find it very hard to tell who someone is if they change their avatar. They are almost a totally new person to me.

Not usually unless it some blatant fanboy system wars thing. Like a Mario avatar wouldn't really phase me. But Mario pissing on a Sony logo probably would.

I do always think a bit more about how I post about Penny Arcade, since my avatar is from them. I probably do appear as a blatant fanboy since I defend them a lot. But then I defend a lot of stuff, because I like being contrary.

I tend to remember people by their avatars instead of their usernames. That's as far as my 'use' of avatars goes though, I read posts for the most part.

Well it's definitely easy to recognize people with their avatars, but I don't use avatars to judge people at all, I read their posts.

Don't judge a book by it's cover as they say.

But in this case it is like the book was capable of choosing its own cover and, despite being a cook book, it has pictures of Kate Upton on the cover.

Holy shit, I think I just figured out a new business.

Usually it's a quick way or me to identify my favorite posters, it's almost like their face

The Kate Upton pictures should be inside to avoid all suspicion. :p

Yeah, definitely in the example you presented I would take their comments less seriously if they had an avatar from the brand they were attempting to defend.

Also back when there were a lot of people with pony avatars, I guess I'm just a hater.

5/5 on the Yukiko avatar though, OP.

I almost never judge someone negatively on their avatar. But like the guys with the Tim Schafer and Michael Jackson avatars, I give bonus points to ones I like.

btw I like My Little Pony, as does Gabe Newell. There are probably 12 really fantastic and hilarious episodes in the first 2+ seasons. There is some shit episodes in there too. Good show overall, and highly recommended especially if you have kids.

I doubt it. I was putting dust jackets of more intellectual literature over my knock off Fighting Fantasy books way back when I was a nipper.
