Gaming GAF, do you judge others by their avatar?

To a degree, but if you spend enough time on the gaming side you'll eventually see that specific avatar behaving a specific way enough specific threads to judge them based on their posting history over anything else.
This happens a lot too. I remember a long time ago I realized I was starting to dislike a certain character I didn't even know about because I was associating the shitty posts of a member to the character in their avatar too much, lol (only happened once).

I've got an established record of pro-Sackboy articles published online. So, yeah, it's a perfect encapsulation of my essence.

It kinda works the opposite way for me as well.

If someone regularly posts things that I find stupid, I'll start to associate the subject of their avatar with those posts. Your avatar often becomes your "face" on a forum whether intended or not.

Do people that don't know who I am think that I'm a Nintendo fanboy?

All the damn time. Though it's more of correlating x post with x avatar. A post defending Sony and has a Killzone avatar? That's a rolls eyes moment.

I try to avoid it, but we really do have some hardcore defenders that I unfortunately group everyone else into.

I think what's worse is that I start getting a reverse association in regards to avatars. I start thinking that Adam Jensen himself is a highly critical video game player that wants to abolish the hand-holdy nature of current stuff; also hates multiplayer and uses a controller for everything.

Wait wait, derrick plays games with a controller? Bahaha, there goes any of the hardcore cred he tried to get.

Creepy anime avatars defending sexualised children in games: the thread.

If I don't recognise the username, absolutely. It's part of the process reading these high-volume boards.

Sometimes it's just so obvious, a critical "MS is shit" from a Kaz avatar, "I hate achievements" from a Mii, "Killzone looks like a PS2 game" from someone showing off Cortana - the mind moves on quicker. It's not that you completely disregard a post, but it's all part of the image the poster is projecting. Occam's razor and all that.

I try not to but sometimes the correlation is a bit on the nose.

But I don't think anything of it other than laughing once to myself and then moving on.
Well, yeah. That's the image they've chosen to represent themselves. If it's tied to a specific company, it's a fair bet they have a strong affiliation with that specific company. If I used an avatar of a bicycle, you'd probably assume I liked bicycles more than, say, roller skates.
Yup.

Yeah... specially if they have a dudebro avatar.

And dudebros usually have their avatar all wrong, with no background transparencies and stuff. But if they are dudebros, I guess they are not very skillful with computers.

Yes and no. I mean, when somebody has a Mario avatar and posts "Uncharted looks fucking stupid" ... I make assumptions.

Same with if it's an Anime avatar and posts some stupid shit like "every game is FPS, this gen suckz".

Not really though I do tend to recognize people I see post a lot by their avatar. Usually throws me when someone I usually recognize suddenly have a different avatar on lol.

But nope, I don't judge others by their avatars, I judge them on their posts.

It's a handy identifier more than anything (for better or worse), so it's a little annoying when people will constantly switch theirs.

I don't like to look too much into why someone will pick a certain avatar, although in most cases it can quickly let you know whether someone is part of a specific sub-community.

I read the content of the posts. Then gradually, I associate the avatar with that content, and that avatar becomes a symbol for my feeling toward that person.

What is a dudebro avatar? Serious question.

Do people that don't know who I am think that I'm a Nintendo fanboy?
Trick question! Everyone knows you. <3
because you're an attention whore boom

A Marcus Phoenix avatar, a Master Chief avatar... a Call of Duty emblem... an avatar from Assassins Creed.

You know, mainstream dudebro games.
See, that's where it goes too deep for me, I wouldn't even be able to recognise/identify a Call of Duty emblem if someone had one.

Combination of posting habits + avatar can paint quite the obvious picture sometimes when you're about to reply to someone's non-sense. Saves me a lot of posts.

Oh, and don't forget the tags. Also important sometimes, as much as a username or avatar. It's definitely bonus points if someone has a tag other than Junior Member or Member - shows that someone's been around for a while. With GAF moderation, that means a certain level of clout immediately.

Yes. Which is terrible really, considering most people think my avatar is some deceleration of liking The Simpsons, or Futurama.

I remember posters by their usernames. I change my avatar all the time so I don't see the significance in them. Just whatever I'm feeling for at the time

but then people can't judge me by it chet

it's an addiction
But your last one was quite good.

Or at least I think it was your last one, I have no idea how many you've probably gone through since then.

I suppose that explains why you keep coming back to the same avatar.

What is wrong with you people!!?!?!

You can't tell me that doesn't work.

Yep. It's not a be all and end all kind of thing but if I don't know the username, then I'll assume there's some kind of affiliation there.

For most people, visual memory > verbal memory.

To a point. If you run into the same poster a few times you'll (or I'll) start to associate their name with their posts, as in, "____ said that" At that point it doesn't really matter what they use to visually represent themselves.

Most of my posts are in OTs so I tend to become familiar with the people playing the same games that I am. After a while their usernames go in the bank, assuming a moderate-high degree of participation.
