Gaming GAF, do you judge others by their avatar?

No I just think that's how they look in real life, unless it's an extremely hot chick or very attractive male.

If it's anime or cartoon, then I assume they're a furry. Even though that applies to anime animals.

As someone who enjoys and supports all platform and wants to be read as being such. I might need to change my avatar after reading this thread.

Really?

I only notice it when somebody posts something along the lines of "Nintendo were planning for the Wii U to sell like this all along!" and then their avatar is some weird fan art of The Great Deku Tree or something.

zkylon: "So, Talking Breasts, how's the weather?"

Talking Breasts: "Don't be such a boob! It's nippy."

zkylon: "Jeez, don't get your tits in a twist..."
I think it would work better if talking breasts had a name.

Something like Jerry.

I honestly recognize people by their username and/or writing style as opposed to which avatar they use. So I guess I judge based on the user's posting style? I dunno. I tend to recognize people more often and faster if their posts are generally substantive or are well thought-out.

Unless the avatar is something that makes me chuckle to myself, I don't think I pay much attention to it.

Reading this thread, I'm glad that I have an avatar that'll help me appear neutral (without allegiances to any companies) as a member.

I typically try not to, but I can recall more than one case of my doing so. Specifically the PASBR-related threads.

Not so much here since I mostly read discussion, but other places definitely. It's more like association with the image though.

There are times I have looked at a poster's name/avvy in a heated back-and-forth thread and wonder, but most of the time, it all comes back to what's written in the posts.

Don't really know how my opinion would be taken unless it was a Metroid/Castlevania thread, or an x-men thread, the latter of which I've since stopped really buying. But I am a creature of habit.

Only those with anime avatars who claim everything is for "brodudes". I usually assume they are the awkward guy wearing a fedora and videogame t-shirts at 28 years old.

No, except of course as a distinctive avatar becomes a symbol for a particular individual that has a particular type of post. Then, I'd naturally see the avatar and judge what the content of the post is likely to be like.

If I saw some really outrageous shit, like some loli in a suggestive pose or some far right wing propaganda, I would of course make some fairly small leaps of judgment that might turn me off from those individuals depending on the discussion at hand.

Edit: Of course you can't help but judge some people based on their avatar. It is how they chose to reflect themselves. I often try to ignore avatars when reading a post but when blatant -ism's/agendas are worn on their sleeves it's almost impossible.

I don't really judge but I use it as an identifier - sometimes I'll relate the avatar to quality posts and my eye will sort of be drawn to those in a thread.

Typically I read posts and then look at avatars/usernames if the post is either good, or bad. I take note of the posters I dislike and like and then use their avatars as my chief means to identify them. If a poster is awful I just put them on my ignore list though.

For some users, if I see a fanboy or apologist position in their posts and then see Mario in their displays I typically begin to write that person off. I notice more Nintendo apologists on Gaf than Sony/MS but even those seem to be few in number and my perception could be skewed by the threads I frequent.

I don't necessarily judge people by their avatars but I certainly recognize people by them. Boss Doggie is so easy to recognize because of his furry avatars with the gigantic muscles :3

It's easy to fall into that trap. I've done it meself quite a number of times. I associated certain avatars with the various factions of GAF that they belong to. Also, I often think an avatar would be the RSI of a user in any forum community.

But then again, would it be really to judgemental to say that the ones with the animu girlz with pettanko or massive oppai for their avatars are most definitely men on AnimeGAF?

What was that saying again?

On the internet, men are men, women are men, and children are the FBI.

I see a billion posters with anime avatars that never post in animegaf. I imagine that's common of most gaf factions.

No.

Yet i kind of regret Kazifying my avatar, since it seems that frenzy has been understandably misunderstood.

I felt dirty when on the GT stream for the meeting, Geoff said something like: "people just love the guy", relating to the sea of gifs that was spawned.

I'll be more careful about that in the future.

I hope not. 'Cause um.. Damn.
Nothing with Bailey Jay.

If someone has an avatar of the big 3 ( Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony ) from the console markers and was constantly being aggressive towards one of the remaining two, I tend to infer that they have a strong allegiance towards the unstated one. It's always seem to me like a divergence and to seed the hatred among both sides of the fanboys.

Well, that could be coz animegaf's has been buried in CommunityOTGAF for the longest time lol.

I only got to know there was a sizeable amount of AnimuGAF active on the site when I accidentally stumbled upon GundamGAF's thread in the main OT some months ago. Also that new GITS announced thread and the Sword Art Online thread also contributed immensely.

There used to be someone here on Gaf with a specific avatar of Ben from LOST. I always read his posts in Ben's voice so everything he wrote always seemed sarcastic to me, no matter what.
I also always read Derrick01's posts with the voice from the Deus Ex dude, which makes them pretty badass.

So yes I think sometimes I get influenced a bit by the avatars if it's something I'm familiar with.
