Gaming journalist union striking (GMG) - asks for people not to visit Kotaku, Lifehacker, Gizmodo and more

We are writers, reporters, artists, podcasters, social media specialists, videographers, and editors making the brands you love: Gizmodo, Jalopnik, Jezebel, Kotaku, Lifehacker, and The Root.

Since January 31, the Gizmodo Media Group Union (GMG Union) and G/O's Media's outside counsel have met five times. Every session, the company's outside counsel sidestepped and delayed, refusing to provide written counterproposals to the union's good-faith proposals. How can you bargain a contract when the people across the table won't even clearly state what they're advocating for?

Endangering Our Healthcare
Management insists on removing all guarantees that our current healthcare benefits and cost-sharing will continue. Management doesn't want to codify the widely accepted WPATH standards of care for our trans and gender-expansive colleagues.

Insisting on Return to Office
After producing years of journalism from our homes to great success, management refuses to add work-from-home flexibility into the contract…even though return-to-office plans were twice delayed due to COVID variant spikes.

Lowballing Salaries During Unprecedented Inflation
After a year of unprecedented inflation, management proposed raising the minimum salary tier for our lowest paid colleagues—and no one else. Management's insistence on offering new hires the minimum tier negatively affects our recruitment and talent retention.

Kicking Diversity Efforts Down the Road
GMG Union wants a robust diversity hiring initiative with the budget to back it up. Rather than codify this in our contract, management wants to punt further discussions about possible diversity efforts to our Diversity Committee.

Offering Inadequate Family Leave
Management's proposal limits parental leave. GMG Union wants enough time for a birthing parent to heal, or an adoptive or foster parent to acclimate their child to a new home.

Threatening Possible Forced Relocations
Many of our colleagues were remote workers before COVID-19 changed our lives, and management refuses to codify their remote positions. GMG Union insists on protection from forced relocations to the NYC office.

Reminder of what you might miss out on

Well now I'm conflicted. I don't go to those sites but now if I don't go to them am I supporting the "journalists" writing that nonsense that are the reason I don't go to those sites?

I don't think I ever went to any of those sites.

The hardcore GAF users already told us plenty of times in many different threads that Kotaku is shit. I took their word on it back then.

Although I don't use these sites, but what do these have to do with me as a gamer for gaming news? I hate politics

I never heard of the others but I can continue to support the union by ignoring Kotaku. I've been avoiding them since they posted cgi child porn. The sooner they die the better.

Let's start a petition where we demand GMG fires these damn wretched motherfuckers that no one likes. Even their parents would sign it.

No. They could actually infiltrate other sites ruining what you want to read. Better to corral these geebags into sites that you can easily ignore.

As an Australian, a good amount of what their asking for is enshrined in law. It doesn't seem that they're asking for anything entirely unreasonable - save for that bit about bypassing their own Diversity Committee to force aggressive Diversity-based hiring... while also complaining about talent retention.

Oh well, I'll continue not reading anything they write and laughing as they slip further and further into irrelevance.

So wait your telling me I should visit all those sites and directly link to there articles for the next few weeks?

Consider it done.

The sites listed are all universally garbage, in large part due to the "journalists" themselves.

Many of their demands are crybaby shit, wrapped in progressive mumbo jumbo language, that I have little sympathy for. (Seriously, you guys are crying about going back to the office!?)

Also, not sure where this is being filed/petitioned, but here in the United States, a total of 27 States have "right to work" laws. So... Good luck with that 😂

Finally GMG understood their writers have no value so they don't have to pay more.

Just refuse their requests and replace them with other writers, nobody will notice the differences.

Honestly, fuck off with this shit. People who do real work are getting fucked in this economy much harder than pretend journalists are. For every single one them whining, there's another person ready to jump into the field. They have no actual leverage.

Majority of today's journalists are the kind of people I avoid in life, Hence I don't read their shit they spew on these shitty websites that are infested with woke sjw nonsense ideologies.

Maybe when these "journalists" start reviewing games properly instead of slapping 9s and 10s on anything popular and start being honest to their readers and posting news about actual games and not politics maybe then will I give a fucking shit about them.

Already don't.

I guess I'll miss out on all those "news" stories telling me to not support games because they didn't have representation from all 73,191 genders in the dev team.

Companies aren't your home office. You have no authority in that matter. You are there to do a job. Not demand the company, where you want to work.

Unions are a cancer to society. Just like a worker can stay or leave their jobs whenever they want, the employer can do whatever they want, as long as they honor the contract they signed.

I really hope unions dissapear someday.

I'm just glad you articulated this position fully so everyone can see the edge of the conversation and start moving the other direction.

It's not like i'm visiting those sites when they told me to...
...Kotaku is now just pure garbage site and nothing is lost in my life without it.

Yeah, I haven't been to theses sites in years. I tend to avoid places that engage in outrage marketing. Those sites seem more like an advertisements with articles around them then any place to get useful information.
