What a weak statement is that, please? He is not even trying to promote or defend Marathon as a game based on it's own merits? The only argument he presents is, "please try Marathon because game development is hard, you know"?

Marathon still has a chance to be a good game, but not based on what I am reading here.

Hey all, former Firewalk Studios dev here. I have been a long time lurker for many years, and rarely post to reddit/any social in regards to what is going on with my life as a developer/artist. After reading the comments about Marathon being Concord 2.0 on reddit, youtube, and twitch, I just wanted to share a little insight into what a forty year old man is feeling after dedicating a large portion of his life to making videogames.

For the past 17 years, I have been a part of some great projects, and worked with some of the most talented people who made me the dev I am today.

Many players know about Concord, and what happened with that project. Concord failed to inspire players, and the messages was heard loud and clear. It was gut wrenching to see our project fail, and be the laughing stock of many online. I have learned that failure, is what drives me to succeed. No one feels as bad as the people who put their time on the line, hoping it will entertain the masses of gamers across the globe. I am not asking for pity, or even sympathy because, after all this is the name of the game, you win or lose. The margin for success is very thin. I took a chance, and lost.

Some of you probably smell blood in the water, and probably want to roast me for no longer lurking, and exposing myself. I hope you don't, and see that people create these projects, and work very hard to be the next big thing. Seeing the faces of the developers on the Bungie stream, gave me hope, and excitement for what is to come for Marathon.

I commend them for taking a chance, trying something foreign to them, that isn't proven, nor guaranteed to succeed.

It takes a lot of courage.

TLDR: I worked on Concord, and did my best. We came up short, please don't punish others for our mistakes. We are all human beings who are trying to create something special, and Marathon is no different. Be kind, and be cool, as videogames are meant to be fun.

There is something wrong if dev has to spend 200 million on a video game.

There is not, BUT, and this goes with anything, the money should be well spent in every possible way

Remember that Destiny asked for 500 million. It was a fucking new IP. Their bet worked and they are still doing fine today

Marathon looks too generic to be a hit. Nothing has the "wow factor". Maybe because it's free it can work in the long run

But I don't see how a more objective approach to a game like Concord is the same as "defending" it.

you quoted someone who wasn't even addressing you, and posed a question. then when someone else replied to you answering that question, you didn't like the answer and called out HeisenbergFX4 . if you don't want anyone joining into the discussion, then DM the user you want to speak with directly. not sure what beef you have with him, since it seems you want to make it personal with him.

You are not going to ARGUE people into changing what they feel. That is the mistake. You think this is about fighting woke, when it actually is trying to have players not feel disgust at things they don't like.

If someone doesn't like something in a personal level, you are not going to change their mind by verbal arguments. You can get some women to pretend to like something in order to fit into some social group, but that is a small pool of the population. And they wouldn't actually like it, they are just pretending to.

The backlash against woke is just backlash against bad products. You either give us something better or we won't buy, you can't tell an Apple user to stop using Apple for the same reason.

Nobody felt that way about Terminator 2, Rocky, Shane, or The Arrival of a Train at Ciotat Station.

Some people feel that way now because they've been influenced to see concepts that may or may not be there.

Our mothers were right. You don't hang around the bad kids because they ARE a bad influence.

Probably pissed Bungie games survive development and they got bought out with a giant employee retention bonus plan worth over $1 billion. Sony even spliced out a team of Bungie people to make a new SIE studio with a new game. Since Bungie was also hired to be King GAAS Overseer, they probably badmouthed Concord internally but the game was so close to release it launched anyway. So while Concord failed and Firewalk shut down, Bungie lives another day.

The games that I listed got crushed when they were announced and they never recovered. It's a pattern that Bungie shouldn't just brush aside, especially when they're making a game that needs a healthy player base.

Not much, since there is no lore or story to talk about.

However, Androgynous characters with blue lips is a clear pandering to the trans crowd so that's that. You have to make an effort to not see it.

This happened to a few companies in the hero shooter and battle royal crazes as well.

Watched that preview the polygon guy did.... seems way too empty. The art style and coloring help enhance that feeling.

People mentioned playing a map for 20 minutes against npcs and then towards the end having a big firefight against other players who can steal your shit. Not a fan of that game loop.

It's a niche type of gameplay/mode in shooters. Most shooters dont have an extraction kind of mode, and the most popular game seems to be Escape from Tarkov which came out in 2017.

If extraction gameplay was such a big hit with gamers, every shooter would have a mode like this or be solely focused on it.

It's a very similar mode to Search & Destroy (play as a coordinated team, one death, and complete an objective to win the round). The key difference is extraction games have way bigger maps and the objective can be different. But as a whole Search & Destroy kind of modes are barely played in shooters because most shooter fans just want to run and gun shooting shit and respawning like cannon fodder. BR is a one death kind of mode, but at its heart it's basically just one death DM/TDM on a big map. So again just shoot and kill.

Bungie isn't trying to sell an extraction game to niche fans where 1M copies sold is a success. They are trying to make Marathon a friendly mass appeal game (no proximity chat with other teams since they want to prevent toxic communication as per googling why. So to get casuals buying it, they are getting rid of smacktalking from other teams). I dont see it happening.
