Gawker and Reddit fight over "free speech", child pornography, patting selves on back

I get the feeling that the Adrian Chen person is going to be stalked and hunted down by the fired Texas guy. I don't know why.
That guy actually seems pretty cool about it

Well, I had already told my boss about the impending article last week. He thought I was exaggerating the potential fallout. So when he called Saturday morning, I just said, "Told you so".

I'm struggling to find any sympathy for him. It annoys me to no end that people are willing to donate to him (and his family) whilst there are countless more people who are more in need, and more deserving of charity. This entire fund raising exercise for this guy is probably more distasteful than what he had done

What was it?

Haha, are people really donating money to an hebephile and moderator of a number of disgusting subreddits?

I say good riddance to Michael Brutsch, Reddit is better off without trolls of your caliber. People who enjoy the gentleman's work should check out a lovely gem on the internet called "4chan".

I just love the delicious irony of protesting the violation of privacy of a man who violated privacy.

And him getting fired.

So you approve of 4chan having posts like that but not Reddit?

4chan is a garbage bin, whilst reddit has the potential to be alright.
Might as well throw the trash into the bin.
Reddit is multiple small (sometimes not so small) communities. There really isn't a way to judge it as one entity.

As long as the stuff that gets posted isn't illegal, I say let them do what they want.

Yes, because /b/ encompasses all of 4chan.

The fact that, despite going to reddit at least once a day, here is the only place I've read about this says a lot about the importance of this story. And about how reddit works.

First they came for the pedophiles,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a pedophile.

Then they came for the Bronys,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Brony.

Then they came for the pop music fans,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a pop music fan.

Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.

It's an active and large part of it. The people running 4chan could close down that section of the website if they wanted to do so, but they don't. Meaning they endorse the activity there, as far as I'm concerned.

If I was running a website I would immediately shut down a section of it if that section had even half the bad reputation /b/ has.

And man, I don't feel bad for the guy that lost his job...but I feel awful for his family. They will suffer for this far more than he will. They're innocent victims because some asshole on Gawker wanted hits. Ugh.

As a fellow redditor, I do not mind at all if those subreddits were banned and do not feel any remorse of the dude that got outed. I liked the website and have control of which subreddits I see in my homepage but wish shit categories like picsofdeadkids or creepshots should be closed off. But I'm all for free speech but, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. And if then, just go fuck off to 4chan.

Brutsch has not been charged with a crime. He was, however, questioned by police because of assertions that he had sex with his stepdaughter. He said it's not true.

What a fucking tool.

I just happened to catch this story while my dad was watching AC360. It was absolutely surreal. CNN talking about trolls and the interview, Jesus Christ. I can't believe that guy was serious.

Interview was glorious. Makes me chuckle thinking about all the guys I know who frequent the site and what sub-reddits they might be participating in.

I've been seeing this story and practically all things related to it nonstop in my feeds over the past week, and holy shit...holeee shit. Everything about this is a clusterfuck. All of them, the admins, violentacrez, the mods and all, all of them deserve everything they're got coming to them. I mean seriously? Is this really what reddit has come to? Really, reddit?? So glad I don't visit there anymore.

Closing it would make it go away? I don't think that's how things on the internet works.

Please find me a single front paged story that anywhere closely relates to any relatable story to what's going on. The site as most people know it resembles OT if anything.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to do this, as I don't visit there. Outside of the attempt I made a few days ago, I haven't been there in years. Everything I've been seeing in my feeds is from other news sites (The Guardian, The Atlantic, Slate, Forbes, etc). I can link to those, if you want. They all talked about creepyshots and child porn, racism, rape, and things of the like. I mean based on the Atlantic article, I knew it was bad, but I didn't think it was this bad.

Reddit is trying to stick to its 'free speech for all' policy and its backfiring on them.

Creepshots and jailbait were both banned, i think they're like the only 2 subreddits to ever get banned, so it was a pretty huge deal.

anyways, Reddit is customizable, i have the subreddits i like and thats what i look at. i wont stop going just cuz of the few creepy and disturbing fringe subbreddits.

kinda like Gaf, i read the threads i want to and participate in the communities i want to, and the others can do as they want, it dont really affect me.

It was so weird watching this on CNN. Best part was when Anderson said, "He seems proud of the fact he was good at pushing peoples buttons, as if he has some skill. Like it's hard to be an anonymous jerk on the internet."

I don't, and haven't ever used Reddit, but let me get this straight....

Dude posts creepy pictures of underage girls, trolls, and then gets outed from his veil of internet anonymity? I don't feel bad for him.

Which is what I hate about anyone who lauds internet trolls. They're not talented, it's not an art, and there's no skill involved. Anybody can be a jerk, especially when anonymity is there for them.
