The beginning of GiTS had Motoko naked, and now you're complaining she's being oversexed in SAC? That is already the original point of the character.
Dali said:Hey I don't agree with the she has to be naked for her camo to work design choice for the movie, but overall that design is still much better than what they did to her in the series. She looks like a cutesy moe character surrounded by a bunch of characters that are rendered and designed much more realistically. Look at her nose and her eyes... and the hair, the purple fucking hair. She just doesn't fit in relation to the other character designs or what Kusanagi is supposed to look like.
If Kusanagi's main draw from the manga was her being a woman, that's fine. The movie took advantage of this in her two naked camo scenes, but her demeanor and the way she looked was that of a serious leader of an elite squad. In the series, even if she wasn't wearing that stupid purple battle leatard so much, the rest of her design still ruins it for me.
I do agree with what you are saying, how she looks out of place in SAC but the Manga did have its fair share of fanservice; especially the newer Manga.Dali said:Hey I don't agree with the she has to be naked for her camo to work design choice for the movie, but overall that design is still much better than what they did to her in the series. I've got the graphic novel version of the original and each individual Dark Horse release of Man-Machine Interface. MMI is something different altogether so I won't address that. I understand there is fanservice in the original GitS, but it would be something like a scene where she is getting dressed (into appropriate combat gear) or a panty shot because she is kicking in a skirt, or an explosion that tears off some of her clothes. Things that are momentary and are actually worked well into the overall scene. I guess since SAC complex is a tv show they couldn't have the very brief yet more suggestive fanservice of the movie or manga, so instead they changed her into a moe character and gave her less clothes.LuCkymoON said:I do agree with what you are saying, how she looks out of place in SAC but the Manga did have its fair share of fanservice; especially the newer Manga.
Besides can you blame Shirow for redesigning her for his fanbase? Look at his pin-up works, so ecchi its almosthentaito good to be true.

BTW are you talking about the the Gal Grease, stuff? I love Shirow's style, but since he went digital it has really been down hill. I see some of his Gal Grease stuff and I think to myself this looks really really good. I guess he finally got the hang of Photoshop. Too bad he's using his new-found talents on porn.

Get some sort of closed display case!

Dali said:To each his own. The SAC Kusanagi just seems like a pathetic attempt to sex-up the lead character, but in doing so she comes across looking more like a clown. All the other characters, even other female characters, look more appropriate. They give Motoko the mal-formed face of a doll, purple fucking hair, and usually she is wearing some stupid swimsuit leatard thing no matter what the situation is (Important meeting? I know, I'll wear my nice professional purple leatard. *rollseyes*). She just doesn't fit in with the other characters and doesn't look like the leader of an elite government agency as she does in the movie or the manga.
Absinthe said:There is a pretty good reason for this. I would put it in my own words, but this guy said it better than I could dream of:
"There's a psychological reason the Major dresses the way she does: to feel feminine. She underwent the full cyberization process at a very young age, and has swapped bodies several times. This leaves her feeling as though she has no real body, and hence no physical gender other than that of whatever body she uses at the time. So she dresses in an over-sexualized way in order to prompt a reaction from men in order to reaffirm her own mental gender construct."
That makes sense to me. She doesn't wear the "leotard" all the time either. She has several different outfits in the series including body suits that covers almost all of her body, trench coats, and a classy military uniform. She can get away with wearing a bikini bottom some of the time because she's a fucking bad ass.
She's a deathly earnest character and I think it was wise to give her such a sexualized, stylized appearance to balance that out. I mean, Togusa and Batou look more "normal" but their personalities are a whole lot more laid back as well. Batou even cracks jokes. I would have been turned off by the Kusanagi character if she was all business.
Dali said:Justify her clothes however you'd like, but aside from how stupid her attire looks most of the time, I also pointed to her features in general looking out of place in relation to everyone else. But, as I said, to each his own. Someone said they liked the SAC Motoko design the most, I said I found it the ugliest and most poorly conceived.
