Will be nice to not work and get to play some long 100+ hour games. Hopefully I still will have the ability to.

Right now I play those same games and get a few hours on the weekend mornings when wife is asleep and maybe a few on the switch during the weekdays (and on pc when it's a slow workday, gotta love those 100+ hour strategy games you can play while you work).

I had to work to get a car. I worked as a laborer for a stone mason for a few summers 40 hours a week+ at $5/hr cash, while my other friends were jerking off.
I was the first in my working class friend group to have wheels due to this.
I then worked fast food when I was old enough for working papers to pay for insurance, maintenance and cigs.

My first car was a Truck that I spent $1000 and more for repair, but it was mine. I installed a sound system and some other cool things. It was great until I got car jacked in Philly.
My point is that nothing was given. If any friend did get a car for free from parents, it was an older car. Why would a parent give their kid (highly likely to goof off or cause an accident) a new car? Shit I can't afford a new car now. My current car is from 2011, and wife's is from 2013. We make it work.


What I will say is vehicles were way cheaper back then, and even more when my boomer parents were teens. My dad had new 69 Camero and my mom a Challenger. They also had snow mobiles and a boat. Shit was cheap in the 70s. In the 80s he got a new f150 for $4000. Today that is $13k, find a truck for under 20k, you can't. They both worked though and life was affordable.

Things got reversed. Back then a TV was expensive and a car and house were affordable. We gave up our manufacturing so that we could have cheap TVS and expensive cars, then covid and corpos buying up real estate broke the housing market. So yeah no one can afford anything, but it's not really the "boomers" fault. It's people of multiple generations in government and corporations, not protecting our job market.

When you're low income and want to game, it's easy to just stick to Fortnite and other types of games where you can play, but don't "need" to spend money.

A lot of younger people had parents who did well, so they try to copy them ASAP despite not being in the same financial position. Live for today, jump to a nice home and car and they are like 27.... "We'll if my parents could get a nice suburban home for $150,000 in 1984, I wanna try to do the same even though a similar home now costs $1,000,000!"

Well. That's life. Things like homes usually go up in value as demand outstrips supply and most people who own homes have no urgency to leave. Unless they got a big reason they got to pack up ASAP and dump their house for cheap, they arent budging for a bad price. It's not like a company selling stuff and needs to sell cheap to get rid of inventory or fight for market share. Selling homes is like people selling stuff online. If they dont get a good price, they'll pull their listing and wait for another time.

So if it's not possible to replicate home life, next best thing to be happy is buy other shit.

The number of people at my past few places I worked at where people in their 20s making good money already driving BMWs or Audis was nuts. They got nicer cars than the directors. Oh, look at that..... most of them are still renting and doing vacations to Mexico twice a year too. So they are putting cars and probably $5,000 of vacations per year ahead of a home. I did the opposite when I moved out long time ago. Small starter condo first + a Honda Civic + no expensive vacays + bought most of my stuff cheap at Ikea. I even still got some of it now as it still works. And they wonder why they are broke. That BMW 3-series or SUV lease, or 8 year financing loan just sapped them of money and mortgage capacity. Great job bud, you just sunk a ton of money into a depreciating asset you can barely afford!

The farther you go back, the more value conscious people are. At least that's my guess. I dont get a sense boomers or their immigrant parents were making money at shitty jobs so they could blow it all buying as many black and white TVs, trips to Europe or $200 calculators when they released for the first time. Nor do I get a sense people back then amped up spending all their money buying dumb faddish products, designer clothes or endless orders from Sears catalogues. The world is more and more a digital payment world too. Farther you go back in time, people paid cash. So you bought with what money you had (aside from big things like mortgages and car loans). People saved up and bought. Now, seems everyone can get a credit card, use debit, or any of those new wave digital payment apps which who knows what the qualifications are to use it. All this does is make people buy more stuff and go into debt more. Some people can control themselves, some cant.

I dont know what credit cards are like now, but my first credit card was one of those university student kinds of cards. My limit was $500 or $1000. I forget but it was low. No annual fee. No extra perks. And I only used it in emergency situations I didnt have cash on me. Cant buy a lot with that low limit anyway, but doesnt mean I should max it out.

Looking at what young people spend their money on now compared to back in the day is a bit of a mindfuck.

Consider:

Back in the day games were one-time purchases, expansions were rare and paid DLC and MTX nonexistent. Digital products weren't even a category.

There were also no subscription services constantly requiring monthly payments. Not just for gaming, for movies, tv , music, apps, sites, services etc.

Before web 2.0, there was no economy of "influencers" amateur porn-stars, scammers, and assorted web noteworthies all with bottomless begging bowls and "tip jars" out for their audiences.

Oh and of course, without mobile phones and social media. none of the above were relentlessly upsold 24hrs a day, 365 days of the year.

Simply spend £120 for the year on ps+ or gamespass and you get a thousand games with new ones every month. I had incel roommate in college btw, very inteligent and nice guy(he had top or close to top grades, much better from mine), he had avg face(nothing deformed/super ugly or anything like that)just he had avg height/skinny build and started balding around 21yo(visible "eagle nest"), one of my best friends, very trustworthy, high morals, almost never drank alco(whole college i saw him drink beer twice) from friends perspective top of the top, he just couldnt talk to women, was shy/always put them on a pedestal (now u would call it simping/whiteknighting, back then we didnt have specific words for that)so always ended up in a friendzone and i couldnt convince him to follow my ways(nasty party animal lifestyle, gym 3x/week, cutthroat personality, maybe bit too domineering even ).
