Funny, that age was my "golden gaming years". I studied at the university at that time and with that cheap student apartment (corridor) all I needed was alcohol (which was cheap) and games. Summer work and student loan far exceeded my spending.

This 100%. I work as a manager at an amusement park making decent money. We hire mostly seasonal employees that are 15-17. I have noticed in the last 10 years that the work ethic has diminished completely. Even with the J1 students, who used to be some of the hardest working people just 10 years ago.

I've noticed a drop in intelligence. Or maybe it's just a drop in common sense. They also can't seem to go 5 minutes without pulling out their phone and looking at it. They are completely addicted to it. And they look at you like you're being cruel when you tell them to put it away and keep it away.

The idea of staying within a company for years to work your way up in it is also dead. That's why they have such little income, because they're going from company to company because anytime they get corrected for what they did wrong or don't think they're making enough money, regardless of their work output, they leave. Hard to save up money when you just keep going from minimum wage job to minimum wage job. I started as a ride attendant and then went to mechanic and then to manager.

Honestly, I blame the parents. They've coddled their children way too much. Their kids can't do basic things like fill out an application without mommy or daddy's help. And then when they get in trouble at school or work for doing something foolish, maybe even dangerous, the parent is way too quick to come in and yell at a teacher or manager. My dad would have whooped my ass. No wonder the kids have no work ethic and are entitled.

For me a video game is not worth more than 60 bucks. Everything above that price can wait till on its on sale. Otherwise I have game pass for everything else.

I'm with you on the value perspective. At the end of the day a single player game is a one and done affair. Who's that worth 80 bucks to these days? I'd rather buy another pair sneakers or clothing, or yet another G shock ( I have quite the collection) things that last have a lasting use and appeal to me, than buy a game that I'm most likely gonna regulate to the backlog after I've beaten it, never to be played again. Matter of fact the only games I play regular are 90s arcade games. They have infinite replay value. Can't say that about single player story games.

Not surprising at all when the average person under 30 has been priced out of buying a home these days, people have debt and loans up to their eyeballs, and the price of everything across the board has hiked dramatically in the past few years. I do pretty well for myself, but even I don't purchase games like I used to. I no longer have a "try it, you might like it" mentallity. I only purchase games I'm truly excited for and confident I'll like. I can imagine people younger than me who are still trying to get their livelihoods started, aren't entertaining the idea of buying $70 or $80 games on the fly.

Most people under 30, unless they are with a spouse, didn't own a home in the early 2000s either (or at least my group of friends didn't). We had apartments, lived with girlfriends in apartments or roommates. I didn't own a home until my 40s and only because my wife had money for the down payment and we landed a good deal before the interest rates went up. Maybe if you are in Finance, Science, doctor/laywer or goverment you are making 6 figures, and then you are filled with responsibilities and don't have time for games.

As for buying games, I buy just as much, maybe more due to steam and eshop sales, as well as physical switch carts. Back the 80s it was all physical games, mostly from xmas/birthday money or my paper route, NES - > TG16/Genesis. The 90s I bought a lot of older/discounted pc games (unless it was something I really wanted like the new Might and Magic 4 or Ultima underworld, Ultima 7, Pools of Radiance, etc... Other things we had shareware for doom, wolf3d, copying from friends via floppy disk or cd and later torrents in the 2000s. PS1 i bought a crap load of games as they were like $20 a pop at the local game shop (electronic boutique, or the mom and pop's game store) At most a new title was $50 but many got discounted real quick. People say they were expensive then, maybe for n64, but not the ps1.

My steam/gog library is probably over 1000+ and my switch library is at least 40 carts and 150+ digital titles. When you start getting games at $1.99 , 4.99, 9.99 and 15.99, discounted, its easy to pull the trigger.

The thing is $70 games are a hard sell. The companies don't realise the closer you get to $100 the less you want to buy it. A new game at $50 you can take a chance with. A game higher tahn that, it better be good. This is why AA market is so important. Pubs who neglect this are going to have a hard time.

Most people of all ages are having to tighten their belts, and people who just willy nilly bought new games will have to do what smart people do, don't give in to temptation and wait for a sale.
