I don't like how the Marvel movies can't go five minutes without cracking a joke. Nothing seems to have "urgency" when it's just jokes the whole time. That being said I think the Winter Solider nailed the serious tone with humor quite well. If this is what he means by changing the tone to be more like that then I am game. I'm the weirdo who has always liked DC comics and movies more than the Marvel stuff.

I've never really liked Johns' comics for the most part, so while I'm more optimistic about the overall change of direction in the DCEU (and the acknowledgment that they've fucked it for the last three movies), Johns being THE guy in charge now doesn't inspire a ton more confidence in me than when Snyder was THE guy.

My biggest issue wasn't with the tone of the movies. Dark and gritty is fine. Dark humour is fine. Dark whatever, all fine. Even a Batman who kills? Fine. The issue with me has always been: plot and dialogue.

I can't think of any movies I've consistently been disappointed mid movie with a plot than I have with DC movies after Nolan Batman. Suicide squad made it as far as half way before the plot started being just... The worst, and the dialogue started to get bad much earlier. I won't even touch BvS in this post, aside from mentioning there is a reason half the posts in the thread have made fun of it, and it's not the tone.

Get better writers. That's 90% of the issue for me. No more Martha's. No more... Everyone's lines except Deadshots in SS. No more 1 dimensional villians.

Hmm, we shall see. I'm disappointed by Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad, Suicide Squad more because the trailers were good. I think I still won't end of seeing Justice League regardless unless someone I know can confirm it's good. the trailer didn't do shit for me.

Both Chris Terrio and David Ayer are great writers. So I don't know what to tell you.

Maybe 'better' is the wrong word. But it's glaringly apparent that they just don't understand how to give the source material any legitimacy. I look at any of the Nolan Batman movies and the scripts are all just so much better. I don't even like Rises/Returns all that much, but I can appreciate that they at least had more substance than basically any other DC movie in the last decade. And I don't think a difference in tone is the Delta here.

But those Nolan films are terrible Batman movies, Begins is awesome but the preceding while great films, suck as Batman films if that makes sense.

I think I understand what you're saying, in that - the movies aren't in the same... Scope? As the best Batman source material - like I can't see Doomsday or the like in a Nolan film, at least not portrayed well. And we don't really get a sense of Batman's genius in the movies either, they make him more of an everyman - but a rich one.

I think I don't hold the source material as sacred however, for example I didn't care that Batman was killing people in BvS - it matters more to me that I enjoy the movie and an buying what the story is selling. The Nolan movies were Batman enough, and the plot, directing, and dialogue did what it needed to do to make me 'buy' it.

I was bummed about Ras Al Ghul's nerf, but If they really did a good job representing him, but the movie sucked, then it wouldn't matter to me.

I think this idea of "mature heroes" came on full force from the mid 80s. I mean, comics ARE goofy, that is kind of the charm, on comics you can find a blonde norse good who speaks to hippies; and a dog with a cape that can fly and shoot lasers out of its eyes. Even Batman is fun because how impossible it is.

I don't buy this idea that you can't have fun with these properties. There is nothing wrong with a bit of sillyness on your life, and trust me, comics can get really silly.

I pretty much hate this interview. Using a phrase like "fast-forwarding" is not something a Kevin Feige would do. It does not inspire confidence since one of the main complaints was the "fast-forwarding" to the team movies instead of doing solos.

Plus the part about Batman coming to terms with his "branding and near murder of Superman" is confusing. Do Berg and Johns not even watch BvS? This Batman is a stone-cold killer when he feels like it. Ignoring the elephant in the room is not fixing it. Will this Batman just be an entirelg different character all of the sudden in the universe?

Or maybe that a juicy retcon is coming where Batman didnt kill anyone in BvS at all. That flipped then crashed through car? Those goons crawled out the wreckage. The turrets parkes in front of the warehouse? Batman fired concussive rounds that ignited small controlled fires that knocked out the thugs with minor burns. The guy who's head he crushed with the front tire of the Batmobile (or the guy who's head he exploded with a crate)? That was Metallo yo he survived.

I'd ragher DC stic to their guns

I'll pay to see their next movie if it starts with Superman waking up from a nightmare screaming. He then describes it to Lois, "you won't believe how stupid it was, Bruce was branding and shooting people, he tried to kill me too. But thanks to you screaming his mother's name he stopped LOL.".
Then they joke about it, thinking he had the nightmare because of the fondue they ate at Bruce's the night before.
They're interrupted by a call from Jimmy Olsen, Perry wants them for a story. Clarks smiles.

A quick "Ctrl-F" of the interview suggests that the term "fast-forward" is not uttered once. Are you referring to the part where Johns said they adjusted the Justice League script so it gets to a point of hope and optimism more quickly? Because that sounds like Snyder came up with another dark, broodfest, and that Johns pulled things back in-line, which is exactly the type of thing Feige does at Marvel.

I don't think them saying that they're going to address Batman's violence is a retcon by any means at all, I think they're saying the opposite. Likely further exploring the character development Bruce experiences at the end of BvS where he moves on from his overly-brutal methods. BvS implies that this level of brutality was a new development for this Batman, due to becoming increasingly similar overtime, so it absolutely makes sense for them to explore this and walk him back a bit in this film.

The only point of reference I (or anyone for that matter) have for Johns is his comics and TV work, so my skepticism toward his impact on the movies is based on my lukewarm reaction to his comics and TV writing. Just like a lot of people's optimism about Johns' impact on the movies is based on their liking his other writing.

Maybe Im being judgemental or picky, but him saying that last part would put me at peace.
If they cant acknowledge it here, then how could I expect them to 'explore' it in the films?

In fact, that was one of my main problems with BvS in the first place. It had a scene of Alfred criticizing Bruce for branding and all this focus on branding....while Batman is killing people. Talk to him about that, Alfred!

Johns and Berg are being Alfreds.

That would seem really stupid and out of place imo, they've been doing this for years, in the branding scene bruce even remarks "we've always been criminals", and this alfred doesn't strike me as the type to be a whiny bitch for years (decades?) on the subject of bruce's kill policy. If he ever brought it up, it's well in the past now, heck he brings up the brand and then never again.

Really wish there was a DC unlimited so I could throw out some rec's. Every comic fan should read JSA and his GL run, as well as 52.

For all the Marvel vs DC nonsense, no Unlimited subscription service is the one area where it's like, just copy their service already. MU is awesome.

I agree with you that they should stick their guns. It would be nice for the later movies to explore the death of Robin, I actually think it's kinda cool to see a story be told from film to film. Suicide Squad kinda failed in that regard cos it would have been cool to see what exactly the Joker (and possibly Harley) did to kill the Robin and why Batfleck gives zero fucks.

Anyway, Johns is the guy for the job if there ever was one. They need serious course correcting, like now. Mos and BvS were so bad. I hope they figure it out and just get rid of Snyder. Demote his ass to a fight coordinator/director/whatever. Just minimize his role. He totally fucked shit up.

The pair admitted many of those changes are first going to be first seen in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which is almost done filming for a November 2017 release. Berg admitted after seeing the reactions to Batman v Superman, they “accelerated the [Justice League] story to get to the hope and optimism a little faster.”

Since they know they fucked up the universe and the fix won't be in till JL, that would imply that WW is unchanged. We also had an unconfirmed rumor that WW was no good very bad.
