Georgia's 6th Congressional District Special Election |OT| Round 2: Fight!

History says if you keep the voters happy, they will continue to vote for you. Just a fact of life. That's what I meant. Not a prediction, more of a fact based on my logic and history (seeing as it does tend to repeat itself). Also not trying to argue or fan flames, just like to think of things in a different perspective.

But are voters really that happy? Trump's approval rating is steadily falling, and yes, while the GOP voters remain high, it is steadily falling, too. And even if the doomsday scenario happens and Trump is elected to a second term, it doesn't guarantee a third term, especially if his popularity trend continues. I mean, think about it, Obama left office with almost 60% approval, but he couldn't guarantee a victory for Hilary. If his downward slope continued, it'd be another W. situation, which lead to the unthinkable: a black President. Hell, Trump is on his way to being even less popular in his first term than Bush was at the end of his second.

I know it's not a big defeat. The truth is winning this one was always going to be next to impossible, the only reason it was this close is because of how big a fuckface Trump is. What gives me hope for the future is if this is where we are in terms of winning GOP districts now, imagine where we'll be with another year of Trump scandals and self-inflicted wounds. Then imagine two more years.
It ultimately doesn't matter though. If it takes 4 years of Trump-level scandals to undo the swing that Obama caused just by existing then your political system is biased too far to the right to be easily salvaged.

The presidency may keep swinging back and forth but from the outside it looks like your country is going to continue it's slow drift into insanity.

Jesus Christ. Some people have different views, OK?. That doesn't mean they hate you. So much vitriol and hatred. I don't think Obamacare was a great health care plan but i appreciate the effort that Obama put forth in trying to fix things. Single-payer is probably the best solution. A living wage is like $20/hr at least. I don't know if that would work out but i definitely support a higher minimum wage.

I don't think people hate gays. I just think they have traditional views in regards to marriage. Demonizing people on one side or the other never helps other people to understand your position. It just drives them deeper into their corner. My niece is gay and I love her just the same as anyone else in my family. I think even Trump supports gay rights.

Even if all Republicans aren't as supportive as most, that's progress.

You all see this right here? Even if this is satire, this is why the GOP gets people to vote for it. People on the right take everything at face value and goes with it. They want to lower taxes, must be for me. More States rights? I get more power locally. Tougher voting laws? No more fake votes! You see what you want to see, and fuck reality.

This is our fight, fighting people who are only looking out for themselves in the laziest way possible, and voting in line to make sure they get the vague and unreliable promises of the right.

Wow... just wow.

- Trump's incompetence, bigotry, and foolishness
- Russia investigation
- Horrible optics for healthcare, foreign relations, and more
- Huge uproar over climate change, net neutrality
- Horrible relations with the media
- Massive campaign for the district
- Polls showing strong Dem support
- Candidate that was actually smart with liberal plans

Result: Republicans win by more than 5 points!
Midterms are gonna go down Ossoff style.

This. Plus it's insanely difficult to unseat incumbents.

We are f***ed.

That the article they posted discussed HIV/AIDs and how Trump would fight hard on that too and how Trump really cares about that stuff really conflicts with the fact that like 6 people left that area recently because Trump refused to talk with them or do anything for HIV/AIDs. Everything they posted is literally the opposite of the truth.

An Australian here.

The US government and political climate is a huge point of interest to us as we rely heavily on the US for trade and security.

A farked/unfunctional US government is not good for the world.
Change the word "Australian" to "Mexican" and you gave my exact same thoughts as well.

I mean......millions are going to lose their health care and many will die because of Republicans.

The Republicans literally don't support even a minimum wage or even higher wages at that.

And very prominent Republicans support conversion therapy for LGBT citizens...which is literally torture. And they want to use their religious views to make law in this country that directly impacts millions of minorities in a negative fashion. Not to mention "not hating gays" but saying their marriage isn't as valuable or deserving as others is directly contradicting. They hate LGBT individuals. Straight up. Hell, it was a huge Republican talking point that people like me are sexual deviants out to pray on women and children. It's not a "difference of view", it's "one party literally wants to ruin the lives of millions of minorities" and one doesn't. The reason for the "hate and vitriol" is because one political party in this country supports ruining our lives.

Trump doesn't support LGBT rights. Pence is his VP for starters. Not to mention all the other shit that has transpired in regards to LGBT matters for a while. IE, nothing at all/even worse. He is surrounding himself with people who are very anti-LGBT and pretty much just let them do whatever.

And let's not forget his "religious liberty" EO last month, and also this month is supposed to be LGBT Pride Month but Trump announced June was everything except fucking LGBT Pride Month

But hey he held a shitty upside-down flag, so progress!!!

Oh god, and fucking this

https://www.aol.com/article/news/2017/06/19/lgbt-donald-trump-pride-month-activists-white-house/22490373/

In February, Trump rolled back protections for transgender students which allowed them to use bathrooms corresponding with their gender identity. The move sparked outrage and prompted multiple protests across the country filled with chants of "Trans equality now."

Another move viewed by many in the LGBT community as a blatant attack was when the president rolled back LGBT protections in May by signing an executive order relative to religious liberty that pro-LGBT organizations say will only open the doors for further discrimination against gay Americans.

Trump broke with tradition at the start of Pride Month this year by not issuing a proclamation, a move Ashley Broadway-Mack, president of the American Military Partner Association, called "deeply disappointing."

Part of the issue is the GOP won in 2010 when we did the census and redistricting, if Dems can take 2020 in the same way then it'll shift pretty quick to the left. They just won big at the worst possible moment in time.

I can't believe there are people naive and gullible enough to actually buy what Trump is selling. He doesn't even sell it well. It's like he says one of his constant nonsensical hyperbole like "No one is more experienced at world peace than me" and this person responds "WOAH, did you hear that? He's going to bring world peace! He's got my vote!" like, why the fuck do you believe this absurdly obvious liar and con man? Worse still is when you believe his random hyperbole or single planned sentence of empty support, even when everything else he does indicates the opposite.

It's the wallet inspector gag from the Simpsons, except it's real life and there's millions falling for it.

Why do people fall for used car salesmen? It's the same here. A lack of education, a lack of desire to educate to remedy your lack of education, and desperation to believe something that doesn't really conform to reality. And mix some racism in there with that and there you go.

Opinion piece ignoring actual facts that Trump has done fuck all of the LGBT community. He held an upside-down flag of "LGBTs for Trump"? The clown just loves to be supported, he doesn't actually give anything back to deserve it.

GAF's already got it covered but look at what he's actually done with his presidency tell us again what a fucking ally this guy is.

The Georgia election seemed pretty much like a lot of Republicans are single issue voters. They're mostly OK with the elimination/weakening of a lot of things so long their pet issues are maintained. Like how a lot of evangelicals went for Trump as the Democratic Party is a completely no-go with their support for female reproductive rights, people in this Georgia election seem to buy into the hope of tax cuts far more than the possible loss of healthcare and the erosion of personal liberties.

I've been asking myself this for almost a year.

I'm fairly convinced they don't like him. They just trust the local Republicans more than the local Democratic Party because they're willing to give their constituents very specific single issues. Ana Navarro is a pretty clear example, she completely loathes Trump and everyone who bats for him but she still bats for Republicans since she likes her local member. A large part of her support for Florida Republicans seems directly tied to their stance on Cuba and not much else.

I can understand criticizing the left, I criticize the left on numerous fronts. I can understand not wanting to engage in tribal politics and have an open mind, I advocate for that.

But to come into threads with bullshit talking points about how Trump really loves the gays and that the Mueller investigation is all a bunch of nothing is just poorly done propaganda.

There are actual proper ways to defend the Trump presidency without just making shit up. Let's say you're a big deregulation fan, Trump has done more for you on that front than Clinton would have, that's a valid argument. But if you're a fan of building a wall or better relations with foreign allies, or coherent policy on healthcare, or immigration reform he has failed you thus far.

He's been telling them exactly what they want to hear. Combine that with historic levels of partisanship and you've got a recipe for disaster.

Also, the blatant racism and sexism.

Are there any cases where someone has been fired or discriminated against based on their sexual orientation? If so, I think that would be an easy case to win in court. Discrimination by any means is against the law.

Oncale v. Sundowner Offshore Servs., 523 U.S. 75 (1998). The Supreme Court held that same-sex harassment is sex discrimination under Title VII. Justice Scalia noted in the majority opinion that, while same-sex harassment was "assuredly not the principal evil Congress was concerned with when it enacted Title VII . . .statutory prohibitions often go beyond the principal evil [they were passed to combat] to cover reasonably comparable evils, and it is ultimately the provisions of our laws rather than the principal concerns of our legislators by which we are governed. Title VII prohibits 'discriminat[ion] . . . because of . . . sex.' [This] . . . must extend to [sex-based] discrimination of any kind that meets the statutory requirements."

Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins, 490 U.S. 228 (1989). The Supreme Court recognized that employment discrimination based on sex stereotypes (e.g., assumptions and/or expectations about how persons of a certain sex should dress, behave, etc.) is unlawful sex discrimination under Title VII. Price Waterhouse had denied Ann Hopkins a promotion in part because other partners at the firm felt that she did not act as woman should act. She was told, among other things, that she needed to "walk more femininely, talk more femininely, [and] dress more femininely" in order to secure a partnership. Id. at 230-31, 235. The Court found that this constituted evidence of sex discrimination as "n the . . . context of sex stereotyping, an employer who acts on the basis of a belief that a woman cannot be aggressive, or that she must not be, has acted on the basis of gender." Id. at 250. The Court further explained that Title VII's "because of sex" provision strikes at the "entire spectrum of disparate treatment of men and women resulting from sex stereotypes." Id. (quoting City of Los Angeles Dep't of Water & Power v. Manhart, 435 U.S. 702, 707 n.13 (1978) (internal citation omitted)).

A little, but not much. It was a different situation. It was only Ossoff on the Democrat side, and there was multiple GOP candidates. That situation basically just paints the same picture: there's simply more Republican voters than Democratic voters in the district, and not enough Independents or Turncoats to put it over the edge.

Not sure until the final numbers come in, but the Rs weren't unified on a candidate back then. And I hate to even bring it up, but that shooting last week gave the GOP the narrative (or perhaps more appropriately, the "fear") they needed to turn out their base.

No, what happened is what Cochese said back then. All the people who voted for the 13-17 (I cant remember how many there were) other Republican candidates in the race backed Handel. It was still close, but not quite enough.

It's still interesting the loss in margin. Even with other candidates running if Ossoff was the only Democrat then that shouldn't have effected his margin since i'm assuming his margin was calculated against the other candidates as well. Sounds like the voting makeup is the biggest cause here for gains and losses like that. I would be careful trying to use events like the shooting as a cause though. If its true (which it realistically might be) then its actually pretty depressing. It shows that any perceived gains made in any given area can be erased at any moment. On top of that these surprise "events" never seem to work out for Dems. Pussy grabbing video, russian hacks, russian ties, bodyslamming reporters, nope no effect. Possible reopening of an exhausted email investigation? End of the world time.

The biggest takeaway from all this for me is that my worry after the election is still in effect, the Democratic party is still in disarray. You have one group clinging to stats and polls in a corner rocking back and forth saying everythings going to be fine. You have another group just jumping in and heckling saying "see I told you so" not caring about those suffering. You got your angry pissed off group just waiting on something else to come through on their twitter feed to be mad and yell about but unfocused and creating alot of noise that is being blocked out. Their is zero leadership in the Dem's party right now. After Obama won you saw fresh GOP leadership propped up,like Rubio and Ryan. I don't see anyone in the Dem party standing up and trying to take the reigns. Everyone's just kind of sitting around hoping and praying something happens and thats not how you build a reliable base. Democrats are not going to win seats in 2018 by sitting back and hoping and praying Repubs sit home or moderates vote democrat because this time they will for sure have liberals back, right? right?

Dem's need clear and visible leadership with a crystal clear platform and no I Hate Trump is not a platform. A big void was left after the election with Obama leaving office, the Clintons off the stage and Bernie being too divisive to be a viable leader. Someone or preferably more need to start stepping up to fill that void or Dems are going to be in trouble.

Tell that to the White House.

That's because Trump made a bunch of dumb promises and can't accept reality so they just spiral deeper into the propaganda hole.

He promised unrealistic economic goals so they have to lie or spin the data to make it look like he's not failing to deliver. It would be interesting to see what happens if the economy begins a downturn and people are losing work while Trump is still telling them everything is great.

Sex discrimination is not discrimination based on sexual orientation and this has been proven many times to be an issue and why orientation needs to be a protected class. You would know this if you did you your research. You haven't even touched transgender issues.

That's not why evangelicals went with Trump

Coming from an outside viewer, that is one of the key cited reasons why they broke for Trump. Every evangelical the Australian media interviewed during the election cited that they didn't particularly like Trump but trusted that he would maintain the Republican stance on a majority of social issues. They were very specific about this - they could not vote for the Democratic Party due to their past/current support for same sex marriage, abortion, sexual education, etc.

There may be various other reasons, including racism and sexism, but they absolutely do not trust the Democratic Party to do what they consider to be the moral thing.

I'm pretty sure supporting candidates that hate gays, minorities, and the poor is worse and much more toxic. Like not even in the same stratosphere.
There was fuck all wrong with that post. Keep on with the trifecta of "why Republicans are the goddamn devil", I suppose. And before you accuse me, I didn't vote for fucking Trump.

Honestly, tonight just further proves that the biggest problem with the Democrats' approach is this "Lets focus on the HIGH PROFILE RACES" approach. It's stupid, it's counter productive, and it's not even helpful in terms of creating a long term strategy.

DNC, DCCC, and DSCC need to rebuild their system so that local and state candidates are encouraged to promote each other instead of the shit Osoff did where he's sending 3 million emails asking his donors to help him get another 3 million dollars all raised for himself. Ossof could have been helping other candidates who are also running this year and next year raise some much needed money.

Ossof went with the approach of one big basket when what the Dems need to do is go with the approach of a bunch of low profile webs that all support the nearby webs. And it shouldn't involve focusing too much on which places are the most competitive. It should instead focus on the old catchphrase "If you build it they will come" when it comes to a voting base.

And this requires Dems to stop with this whole "well this race is really competitive, so we need to add another $10million to this ONE race" approach and instead think of it more like "how many different candidates can I significantly boost with $10 million?"

EDIT: And remember that woman who dropped out of challenging Steve King due to death threats? Well I'm sure it couldn't be THAT expensive to pay for a couple of body guards to convince her to go back into running, right. And yes I know that King would probably still win, but I guarantee you that the margins would end up much closer than expected so long as King's opponent doesn't try to go high profile with the race. Point is it would create a democratic voting base in Steve King's district, which would help us do much better both in Iowa and in King's district.

Why do you say that? The Democrats are 0 for 5. If anything they will lose more seats in the senate, because up to this point I still don't know what their message is other than Russia and Trump is bad.

As for historical precedence, if he does get above 3% GDP and fulfills his promises we are looking at 3 Republican terms as least (look at Reagan).

Not trying to pick a fight, just trying to point things out that are usually ignored.
Sitting presidents almost always lose seats in midterm elections.

Hard, but far from impossible. Right now there's only a 24 seat difference, I think.
It's harder to make it flip but when a flip does happen, way more seats than would have flipped otherwise will flip. This is the nature of gerrymandering: you spread out your support more in order to win more seats. But your margin on those seats will be more tenuous.
