Getting all my wisdom teeth pulled. Advice?

Hey guys and gals. Shortly after Christmas I'm getting all my wisdom teeth yanked out. I'm 38 years old and I've heard it's going to be hell. What were your experiences with it? How long was your recovery time? The pain killers good at least?

I did it under local anesthetic. 3 of them popped out easily. The fourth one shattered and took 3 hours to get all the pieces out. Gave me nerve damage in that part of my mouth. Good luck!

Also, days later I had a dry socket and had to go back to the dentist who told me he had to tap the bone in my jaw to get it bleeding to heal up. That was painful.

Yea not so bad. I did lose a clot in one on day 3 and it freaked me out a bit. It all worked out though.

They knocked me out for it though. Just woke up with a bunch of gauze in my mouth.

When I got mine out early this year, there was no pain whatsoever. I'm 34 and all of mine were removed. The only thing I didn't like was the mouth constantly being filled with blood and you have to keep spitting for the whole day. I ended up dissolving my painkillers as I didn't use them.

Had some swelling and soreness for a few days, not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Didn't even use the pain meds they prescribed, just tylenol. Eat some mashed potatoes, cream of broccoli soup, pudding etc afterwards and you'll be good.

don't forget to get your wisdoms removed, it's how the pentagon tracks you

when i went to have my wisdoms out, complications required me to be put completely under

i didn't bother to tell the anesthesiologist about my absurd marijuana consumption, turns out i wasn't completely fogged out

was put into a weird dream state, felt a lot of pain there, was kinda a nightmare

woke up in a uncontrollable wage, slugged two of the nurses and tried to escape

guess this might be why, holy fuck at those propo numbers

blood was EVERYWHERE, all over me and the gurney, the floor, splattered on the tools and tech

the surgeon had his hands over his face after it was over, sitting alone in the hall, shaking

it was really fucked up

my surgeon was a harvard grad, probably the best in florida

godspeed and good luck

I've heard nothing but bad things about the process and have been told that it's in my near future. I think I'll go for the knockout injection and hope I don't wake up in the middle.

It’s nothing. Got my two left ones pulled early in the year. Im 34. Everyone likes to say how bad it is but it was fucking nothing. Don’t get put to sleep. It’s not worth it. You won’t feel nothing. It’s only the next day days where it’s just a hassle . Spitting blood etc.

Then again, some people have difficulties with how the teeth are positioned. Some are attached to nerves and could cause nerve damage if you have a hack dentist.

You’ll see different experiences between people - for some people it’s not big deal and they’re right back at it, some people have longer more painful recoveries.

I had one of the more painful experiences - one thing that helped me was to stay ahead of the pain medication schedule.

Definitely pick out non-solid food that you can stand - it will be all you can eat for the first couple of days.

Pain isn't too bad, just found it difficult to talk immediately after, be careful with bleeding in the days afterwards. Recommend having soft food, as mentioned.

I had needles stuck under the tongue and roof of mouth for anaesthetic and felt the force of the dentist yanking the teeth out with pliers. I was impressed with the surgical precision of such an approach.

It's a myth about wisdom contained within those teeth, if anything I am slightly less stupid following my visit. No lollipop provided following the visit.

I was terrified. Woke up one day with swollen gums and junk again and said fuck it, they gotta go.

It really was not that bad. The sound was the only thing stood out.

Yeah it's kinda gross for the first day but ask for a good pain med. And you'll have some pain as the dose wears off but take the next immediately and you'll be fine.

I had 3 out. The 4th never popped so they didn't go for it. Two were crazy impacted. Still wasn't bad.

Just take it easy and enjoy the pain killers. Pretty much all you can do. I think you have to be careful what you eat and you can’t suck anything through a straw... just make sure you do what they tell you as far as post surgery care goes. I had all 4 done at once. They put me to sleep for it and I wasn’t in much pain after. I got high and played Skyrim for three days and it was actually pretty enjoyable.

Best advice I can give is do ONE side at time, not all at once. That way you can eat better and the pain won't be bad. I only needed ibuprofen for 3-4 days and I was fine. It will take a little over a week to completely heal

I had mine out when I was fairly young (for having wisdom teeth pulled out anyway) so I don't think my frame of reference is what you want, but it wasn't too bad for me. Hopefully that gives you some optimism?

Mine were fucked. Impacted and needed to be broken.

I fell asleep, woke up 2 seconds later, and they were gone. I was eating normal food within about a week, almost fully healed in 2. Lost a few lbs.

I had all 4 yanked out at 18. I started military college hell week about 4 days after the surgery. Huge mistake. Dry socket is a bitch.

Don't get put to sleep. It's an experience that'll stick with you. I got mine out when I was a teenager and I can still vividly remember it. It's not really painful, just disturbing watching the dentist yank and gave blood spurt out. Good times.

My operation was completely painless. Took maybe 45 minutes to get one out because it was really stuck, but it was painless. Even the needle shot to my gum was a lot less painful than I ever imagined it could be. I can't really even say it was painful. Only slight discomfort but not real pain. That was what I was afraid of the most and it ended up being almost completely painless experience.

Dry socket however... more of that in the reply below...

Also, days later I had a dry socket and had to go back to the dentist who told me he had to tap the bone in my jaw to get it bleeding to heal up. That was painful.

I had one wisdom teeth taken out a month or two ago and the dry socket thing happened to me. I had it untreated for a week and as soon as the effect of painkillers stopped, half of my head was in major pain, it was really hard to sleep, and when I took more painkillers it took 1,5 hours to have any effect. So if I missed taking the drugs on time I was guaranteed to have 1,5 hours of extreme discomfort.
And when I got it treated, it was exactly what you said. It was a completely different type of pain from all the other pain I have experienced. It was really quite something to have something being pressed directly to the bone and it really was painful. That said, the treatment worked well and after that I was able to stop taking painkillers three times a day and very quickly was even able to skip full days and then stop taking the painkillers for good.

Hopefully the doc doesn’t drill into your tongue. That shit hurt and he laughed at me. Otherwise it was fine, I didn’t even fill the scrip (not a fan of that shit).

I am getting a couple of crowns replaced after Christmas as well, I rather like this dentist vs. the one who did the og crowns- one of which was one of the most painful experiences I’ve had since the tech dry fitted the damn thing over 20 times. Not surprised it’s not seated well causing extreme discomfort with cold and chewing.

Did it in high school.

Didn't feel a thing when they pull it and I was awake the whole time. Like all teeth pulling, they freeze your mouth and the only thing you "should" feel is the dentist trying to ram your mouth with his clamps to yank them out. Didn't hurt, it's just a lot of pressure.

As a souvenir they'll give your your wisdom teeth in a small pill bottle. lol

I don't remember much afterwards but it wasn't that bad. You just got to use a ton of gause pads and you'll be gobbing up with bloody traces of spit and eating soup and drinks for a bit until it heals up. You're not going to eat hard stuff or chips which can cut into it for a bit.

If you're really freaking about it, they can probably put you under. I'm not sure if that's a personal choice you can request or if it's up to the doc.

If you don't like needles into gums, they should also be able to slather your gums with numbing stuff, so even the needle is painless. Then the needle goes in to freeze the inside and you should be good to go.

i had something called Quinceys at the time, and once i got through that clusterfuck they said i needed to have all my wisdom teeth out.

I was put under for it, all i can say is my right cheek looked like i had a tennis ball stuck in it, it remained that way for about 3 days, the pain was horrific.

On a scale of 1-10, wisdom teeth were about a 8 on the pain index, quincies which is like some sort of infection of your tonsils was a10/10.

Somehow that raised my blood temp by over a degree from normal and i thought i was being boiled alive, the worse pain ever.

To put it in context, broke my arm playing cricket, 4/10

For me, the most painful teeth issue I had was the day after I got braces as a kid. Some kids had the same issue, some didn't.

The day you get braces, you don't really feel any pain or the traintracks doing it's pulling.

Then you go to bed and wake up in the morn. Whole mouth hurt for days. You could feel your teeth being pressured even when you aren't doing anything. And the second you close your mouth and teeth together it killed. Because of that I couldn't even chew or clamp down on my mouth for around 3 days. So I only drank liquid and ate super soft food I could slurp down.

I'm amazed it worked. With how painful it was I thought the metal was too tight and my teeth were going to break off. It felt like someone was standing on my jaw for days.

i remember being bitten or stung by a Matabele ant while i was in zimbabwe, i was like 8 or something. I had the knack of picking up bugs, snakes all that kinda of stuff, well i tried to pick up the ant, and the little fucker stung or bit me on my finger, it was like someone drove a hot nail into my finger, it must of been like ten mins of absolute agony.

In reference i got bit by a soilder termite while destroying its nest, it was huge, the bite drew blood but was like a 7 on pain index, that mother fucking ant was like 11/10, can not believe something that small, ok its a very big ant, can cause so much pain. Bee sting say 3/10 if that.

Had two pulled out in the chair in a couple of minutes.
Couple days to a week of some bloody holes where they used to be and after that it's like they were never there.

Not really any pain at all.

Without a dry socket, it's nothing bad really. You just have to watch what you eat for a couple of days and you are good as new.

Now if you happen to get a dry socket... that shit will make an atheist begs God for mercy. I am a fairly pain tolerant person but the pain of a dry socket made me fucking kneel man. Just take care of that blood clot where your tooth used to be and you'll be fine.

Might get mine pulled one of these days. Dentist has been saying they've gotta go for a decade now. Not that scared. A lot of it just seems to be luck of the draw. Some people experience hell and to some it's nothing. Dentist is never fun, but usually the fear is worse than the actual procedure.

It's not that bad. Play some Dark Souls, man up. It's nothing, just make sure you got a week or two for recovery and just play video games, time will pass and you'll forget that you had it.
