Ghost of Yotei will build on Ghost of Tsushima with guns, a gorgeous change of scenery, and "unexpected dangers"

This second game takes place a full 300 years after the first adventure. In a console generation filled to the brim with more straightforward sequels, it's a delight to see a developer make such an audacious move, abandoning the characters from the first game and travelling three centuries forward in time for a new 16th century Japan setting.

According to Andrew Goldfarb, senior communications manager at Sucker Punch, we can expect "sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers". One of the best features of the original game was how alive and dangerous it felt to explore. It's nice to see a studio remembering that an open world shouldn't just be an annoying long commute between the fun bits.

New protagonist Atsu possesses a skull mask that is the terrifying assassin accessory to beat in 2025. More outstanding swordplay is a given, but Atsu will also be able to use firearms. The conflict between fighting with honor and being more sneaky with your kills (and, therefore, actually surviving) drove a lot of the first game's story.

Looking forward to it. If this doesn’t get a release date before May/June, it won’t release this year. Sony will kill the game if it comes out after GTA6.

I feel like I am already getting deja vu this year. One of my favorite games of 2024 was a Metroidvania released in January in Prince of Persia The Lost Crown. Fast forward a year and I am loving a Metroidvania released in January again in Ender Magnolia. But my 2024 GOTY was an open world samurai game in Rise of the Ronin and now here we are with another open world samurai game that I can see taking my top spot again.

I hope it really differentiates from Tsushima. I don't want Sucker Punch to adopt the Ubisoft copypasta. If there aren't things to discover on the map, don't make it open-world.

Sony now releases games on Thursdays, so July 17th (5th anniversary of Ghost of Tsushima) would be quite fitting.

That’s actually a downside, IMO. The first game had outstanding swordplay. Archery was meh and adding early guns to the mix detracts on top of that.

Not sold on the protagonist change anyways, but I guess we will see how this turns out.

They gotta either have better quest variety, or fewer but more involved quests. I gave up on the game after 30 hours because the formula because so tired/stale.

Chasing a fox for the 100th time is not fun.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
Have a lot of doubt in this regard considering the output of Sony’s US studios with Spider-Man, Horizon, TLOU and God of War sequels, but hopefully I am wrong.
Those games it was present, but I never found it to be over the top except for the pointless DEAF mission and MJ being OP in SM2.

In that case you will probably like GoY I think especially if some gameplay / world / NPC improvements materialize.

Personally I found all of these titles fully obnoxious and preachy.

You would think so. But this is a company that sent Horizon games out to die twice(against BoTW, and Elden Ring).

Chasing a Fox wasn’t a quest though. It was a non mandatory side activity to increase your charm slots. Much like the bow challenges and bamboo slicing activities.

I thought the side quests themselves were very well written. Gameplay wise I’m not sure how much variety you can inject in a game starting a Samurai.

Arquebuses and matchlock era samurai warfare is cool, so this should be fun.
BANG!

Ok, now let me sit for 45 seconds whilst I reload, prime, and cock this gun.

For action games like this they gotta play so fast and loose with the tech it may as well be set in the 1880's with proper repeaters. The whole point of the arquebus was that it allowed a relatively low trained (or quickly trained) peasant to take out a warrior who has been training for 15+ years. NOT that the arquebus was in any way superior to the bow in any era they co-existed. I forget if the crossbow was ever popular in Japan but it was a similar story.

So for a highly trained ninja type, using an arquebus (or some sort of pistol I'm sure) would be silly. And I'm sure there will be revolver type weapons to allow for multiple rapid shots.

That article is a load of nonsense.

One of the best features of the original was how alive and dangerous the open world felt? Are you fucking kidding me. It’s the most barebones of all Sony open world games and that’s saying something. It should have been a linear game. That’s how shitty the open world was. A fox to pet. Yay. Beautiful grass. Get real.

If this game doesn’t drastically improve the liveliness of the open world then we have another 6/10 game on our hands.

Huh, Sony set HFW to release in February when Elden Ring was planned for January, then it was ER that got delayed to February.
I was mostly joking but with Sony putting both Horizon games up against 2 gigantic RPGs, they're clearly not too worried about competition.

Having said that, GTA 6 is another beast. So maybe they steer clear?
