Are we doing lists? I had to think real hard to even remember 10 games I played this year but I came up with 10. Two of these I bought almost entirely based on GB recommendations. Doom isn't one of them because I VPN'd into playing that before it was cool.

XCOM 2 - got a little buggy near the end but still hands down the most intense turn-based game I've ever played. Brilliant evolution of the previous one.
Overwatch - It's like team fortress 2 except my friends actually bought it
Monster Hunter Generations - Competent MH with interesting endgame and fun new moveset additions, but lacks 4U's content and story stuff
Street Fighter V - Some of the best basic gameplay of any fighting game ever. All the other problems can't change that.
Doom - Definitely wins Best Surprise so far, but TLG and FFXV could still impress me
Hitman™ - I was so convinced I wouldn't like this game but I'm glad I gave it a try after watching Brad/Dan suck at it all year. I'm Dr.Beach!
Titanfall 2 - Console-y multiplayer pisses me off sometimes but it fixed most of my issues with the first. Solid-ass game all around.
Darkest Dungeon (did this come out of EA this year or 2015?)
Dark Souls 3 - Liked it but never quite finished it, so it goes at the bottom. Multiplayer sucked compared to 2 but the main game was very well done.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions - See above, just got swamped by other things and have to go back to it.

WoW Legion is my most-played game this year but I find it hard to rank it really. I'm having fun with it because my friends are playing it, not because it's particularly great. But it's kept my interest longer than most WoW expansions thanks to finally having worthwhile 5-man content like speedruns, karazhan, and karazhan speedruns.

One thing's for certain:
They will not top the 2012 skits.

Are those the CollectShun, conspiracy theorist, and mad scientist Patrick skits? If so, yeah, you're absolutely right. Those skits were great! 2013 was the decades one. 2014 was the cursed Mario Party game. 2015 was them doing alternate things like Jeff with a baking show and Austin with a Gundam builder show.

Of all of those, 2013 was the weakest in my opinion. But that was about six months after Ryan's passing and about another six or seven months before Dan and Jason were hired, so it's understandable.

I feel like actually buying Hitman has had the unfortunate side effect of turning Brad and Dan's adventures from 'haha look at these idiots' to 'oh my god just give me the fucking controller'

I'd imagine it will get better once I get to the later QLs but I'm only watching them as I master each map.

When I was watching the Hitman stuff Dan & Brad did (Training, France and Italy) I was always thinking I was misunderstanding the rules of the game because they always seemed so sure about what tresspassing/searching/hunted and all that meant.

Man, I was wrong. I didn't misunderstand.

If I had to choose right now, um

DOOM
The Witness
Kirby Planet Robobot
Pokemon Sun
Quadrilateral Cowboy
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth
Reigns
Ratchet and Clank
Firewatch

but like I still wanna play Titanfall 2 pretty badly, and then there's Hitman which I think deserves a spot just for all the fun I've had watching it on stream

and Dishonored 2 as well... plus TLG isn't out yet... argh

That's quite an eclectic list.

My rough favorites of the year list would probably look something like:

The Witness
Inside
Titanfall 2
Overwatch
DOOM
Uncharted 4

DOOM is far and away my favorite game this year. Still have some games to play.

Imma join in on the lists. The locks for my top 10 (in no order) are probably these

Firewatch
Uncharted 4
Stardew Valley
Titanfall 2
Dark Souls 3
The Witness

The maybe's are:

DOOM
Battlefield 1
Furi
Tricky Towers (this game was rad, spent so much time online)
Oxenfree
Salt and Sanctuary

I'm going to play Steins;Gate 0 and Call of Duty: IW before the end of the year as well, so they might creep in. Gotta spend more time with DQ Builders too.

In terms of indie titles The Witness is an amazing game that I haven't finished (and probably never will).

Stardew Valley is a pretty fun game that I need to put more time into but so far it's quite an accomplishment.

Firewatch is my runner up for game of the year.

Hyper Light Drifter is good but I haven't finished it. I feel it looked better than it played.

Oxenfree and Inside are on my play list for the next couple of weeks.

This is what I remember from the top of my head. Two of these are on my GOTY list for sure with Hitman and Overwatch the other two titles I really enjoyed this year.

SFV and Battlefield 1 were the other two big games I bought. SFV I'm terrible at and Battlefield is pretty fun too. I mean both are fun for sure but not amazing.

Maybe I missed something but this year was cool.

I played some of these as well, but I so did not care for The Witness for example. I was looking forward to it for so long and then was just super bored by it. Stardes Valley is kinda fun but didn't grab me. I adore how Hyper Light Drifter looks and how it tells its story, but didn't have much fun playing it.

Then we have stuff like Darkest Dungeon, which for me was just too grindy and turned into a total slog. Tyranny I like the story in but the combat is just not as good as it was in Pillars of Eternity.

I do t know, indies just didn't do it for me. Meanwhile I have like a 100 hours in BF1 and I still want to play more.

Lotta shit left to play, but in no particular order:

Doom
Stardew Valley
Pokemon Sun
Dark Souls 3
Forza Horizon 3
Hyper Light Drifter
Enter the Gungeon

On the list to play:
Abzu
Inside
Hitman
Tokyo Mirage Sessions
More of The Witness
FFXV
TLG
Dishonored 2

Rocket League GOTY

Since basically all games I care about are already released, I think my top 10 list, in no particular order, would be

Battlefield 1
Dark Souls 3
Dishonored 2
Doom
Hitman
Grow Up
Civilization VI
Tyranny
XCOM 2
Overwatch (despite Mei)

2016 is the year were the "AAA" industry redeemed itself for me.

Funnily enough, I'd be hard pressed to name an 11th game. Not saying that I didn't enjoy other games this year but looking at the games I've played none of them scream "BEST OF THE YEAR" now. I guess Darkest Dungeon technically counts?

Deus Ex might be my biggest disappointment of the year
My "Game so bad I actually really hated it" award goes to Oxenfree.

I didn't hate Oxenfree but that's a game I do not get the love for by some people on GAF. I thought it was a very middle of the road narrative game with very little going for it. The dialogue is fine, the art style is mostly ok, the sci-fi twists have been done before and are just ok here. There's a couple of real cool moments and the dialogue system is neat but I wasn't impressed by it.

How was Grow Up btw? I liked Grow Home but heard nothing about the sequel.

The Last Guardian Defence Force are already getting themselves in to a tizzy.

I hope it turns out great, who doesn't want more good games, but if not, then at least the Review Thread should be hilarious.

Oh right, Quadrilateral Cowboy. What a cool fucking game.

I was gonna say this was a generally weak year for indies (aside from The Witness and Inside), but now that I'm seeing lists, we got QC, Darkest Dungeon, Stardew Valley, Enter the Gungeon, Hyper Light Drifter...yeah, maybe I was just disappointed in Firewatch.

It's a weird game. If you hated the climbing in Grow Home you might actually like Grow Up cause it's basically non existant (at least for me). I really, really enjoyed the game though I do enjoy me some "Just tick all those boxes and watch something in the background" kind of games as long as they are visually pleasing and it's fun to move around.

It's a weird mixture between Grow Home and the Ubisoft Open World formula that ended up working for me.
Ended up 100%ing it.

I feel the same way about Oxenfree, it was a fine game but I feel like I missed something given how much I see people praise it.

Sounds like a good podcast game, i'll have to pick it up sometime when it goes on sale (or maybe even PS Plus)

I mean, if you're not doing a Small Business Man ad, then what even is the point of having a GotY discussion.

Anyway, I always thought they should do the GotY stuff a bit later in the, well, year.

Overwatch
Stardew Valley
Pokemon Moon

Need more time with:
Fire Emblem fates
Digimon Cyber Sleuth
Hyper Light Drifter

Haven't played but want to get to:

I should stop trying to regenerate in Titanfall 2 and finish some games but I gotta enjoy this MP while people are still playing it
