Those exist too. For example, you unlock Bowser Jr. by beating Classic with Bowser at 7.0 difficulty. There's always been ways to unlock characters via playing a shit ton of VS, fwiw, but it seems a LOT easier this time round.

- Suck up opponent
- Jump off stage

It usually works at least once and it's excellent every time.
