He'd be at home.

Ireland's pub's are home for anyone innocently curious about Ireland and the stories people are willing to share within them. Dan is going to find a lot of friends in the pubs of Dublin, Galway, and Kilarney.

I can see Dan's stories going up another level and i'm all for it LOL

Good God that Smash Bros Unfinished is painful to watch. I don' know what's worse, Jeff and Brad dismissing the game from the word go, or Dan being the only one down with Smash at GB, meaning it sort of fell to him to be the one to try to appease the (highly subjective) criticisms from both Brad and Jeff at the same time.

Now just imagine if Dan wasn't there.

I think that actually might of been better in the sense that it would of been a mercifully short feature of Jeff playing for five minutes then saying "Yep. That's still some Smash Bros-ass-Smash Bros." But Dan earnestly trying to sell the game to them and being met with just crickets is damn awkward.

Like I get that Jeff sees it as a crazy party game and the notion of competitive Smash is crazy to him. But it's weird that they don't try to embrace the crazy mayham aspect of Smash that they identify Smash being all about and try to have fun with that instead of just sighing a lot through the video. Like, have an all pokeballs match with items set at Very High or something. For a group that loves Gang Beasts and Samurai Gunn being unable to find any enjoyment with Smash is something that simply baffles me.

It's always more fun when the crew genuinely tries to enjoy themselves, yeah. They could do it with Mario Party, so it should be possible for them to have a good time with Smash.

That Jeff and Brad aren't fans of the series isn't a revelation, though, and I thought their discussion with Dan was cordial and fair. I didn't find the video jarring at all. The one thing I found disappointing was how their negativity clearly hindered Dan's enthusiasm. I wish he hadn't felt the need to clinically rush everyone through everything. When the matches boiled down to mindlessly bouncing around mostly empty arenas, pressing buttons without any actual goals, they were pretty boring. On that Mega Man stage, though, it actually felt like Jeff was on the verge of enjoying the game.

I'm curious to see how it went on UPF, but I still have a glimmer of hope that everyone can get together and have a good time with it.

Maybe the Wii U quick look will be better?

Man, you can tell from the PAX Panel rehearsal video that Jeff, Alex, and Dan have all given some degree of serious thought to actually learning the craft of wrestling.

I just don't understand how guys like Jeff and Brad who play Street Fighter and that kind of shit can't immediately grasp Smash Bros. It's so much more intuitive to just press a button and a direction than all that quarter-circle-forward-punch-kick nonsense.

There were a few things like Jeff complaining about the controls like tap-to-jump (which can be changed or even outright turned off) that makes me think it's another Yoshi's Island situation. He's made up his mind and, even if he'll never end up liking (X), he'll always find a reason to dislike it.

But, you know, it's not like any of this really matters. Jeff dislikes a game, whoo. Let me spin my finger to show you what an event this is. Jeff dislikes most games. Jeff dislikes 90% of games released this year and I only use such a low number because I'm sure someone will post "Jeff said this game looked cool in hour three of the E3 cast" in response.

GB guys are gonna hate things, sometimes for good reasons, oftentimes for bad ones, occasionally for none at all, and it does not at all affect what you like. Probably stop looking to Giant Bomb as tastemakers? I mean, don't look to anyone for it wholly, but especially not GB. They are very...rigid in their likes and dislikes.

Edit: To be clear, I meant that as a general "you".

I expected the smash bros segment in unpro to be way worst considering the impressions from this thread. It was fine. They weren't even that negative.

As someone who's done a certain amount of actual wrestling training I can say certain things you take for granted watching it on TV... not so easy in practice. Just bumping without killing yourself, a challenge. And running the ropes.

I just bought Metal Gear Solid yesterday and I'm already at Rex. Dan and Drew really need to play it in bigger chunks.

Yeah I think the memory and skill atrophy between play sessions is pretty bad. The episodes could stand to either be shorter (due to less mistakes or wandering about because they forgot where to go) or progress faster through the game (while still keeping the same 1.5+ hour duration).

Really bummed about the Smash stuff. The game is pretty fantastic. It's like they were set on not even giving it a chance. Oh welll.

I for one think there are too many Smash fluff pieces from most of the other jounalist, it's nice to hear someone talk about why they don't like it and what they feel should be different, I honestly wouldn't expect anything less of Jeff on that front.

I think Giant Bomb should give up on the whole "covering big new games just coz" thing tbh

the site's main highlight has been playing a 16-years-old PlayStation game badly, meanwhile their coverage of the two biggest games of the year has been pretty depressing for everyone involved

at some point it probably keeps the site afloat though so IDK

maybe Dan should do a video teaching Brad how to play Smash Bros.. I enjoyed Danny teaching Drew how to play FIFA, even though I don't like FIFA or football at all, so maybe the same would true for people who don't like Smash Bros.

I don't get Smash Bros either, seems tedious to me I even turned off UPF last night...but then again I was working full time and my social life was drinking every weekend (the joys of being from the UK and being 17/18 at that time) by the time the N64 was released so had no reason to get into 'party' games at all.

i don't think jeff understands who smash bros. is for. some people care about fire emblem, no one under the age of 35 cares about excite bike. no one. sure, no one cared about marth(specifically) or ness or rob either, but that's why the weird obscure nes-era game characters occupy less than a third of the roster. from the way jeff's talking, he seems like he'd only be satisfied if that was the entire game.

but that's dumb. nintendo has made games after the 90s too, and those games also have fans. that's why you have "toon link", pokemons, robin and olimar. to an entire generation that is nintendo.

hell, i don't give a fuck about excite bike. im a millenial.(shulk is also lame, though)

I love Smash Bros with all my heart, but I do agree with Jeff about the way Final Smashes work. I've always hated that stupid Smash Ball, my social group wound up switching them off in Brawl after the first day. A meter you build up would be much better.

I enjoyed their Smash coverage. If you did not, that's fine, but if you got agitated over it, maybe adjust your expectations next time. I think if they didn't cover big releases they would get flooded with requests and questions about how they felt about them.

Liking certain videogames and disliking others is not an age thing.

That was the one thing I 100% agree with him on. Meter mode would be such a better way of doing Final Smashes. They distract from the game so much.

I dunno. While the tone started very negative (thanks to Jeff and Brad) I think they definitely established the reasons for their dislike of the series, as well as giving it proper respect towards the end. Jeff in particular mentioned a few times during the QL that he liked the first game and the idea, but was worn down by the series' lack of innovation/changing of the formula. (Jeff also has an unnatural love of very obscure Nintendo properties, apparently.)

Of course, I would disagree with Jeff on the series' decline. Every Smash game has been larger and more complex than the last. Each one has had more things to do, while maintaining the core of the gameplay. Most importantly (and this is something PSASBR forgot entirely) each iteration of Smash faithfully and respectfully represents all of the mascots involved in the game, no matter the company involved. All of this is done while reaching ever-farther into the annals of video game history to fill its roster... in addition to adding its own unique twist (trophies, Master Hand, subspace emissary, etc).

I also want to say that Smash's idea of trophies was brilliant, both as a knowledge-base for Smash players, and as a marketing tool for Nintendo. Small, collectible statues with little snippets of history and lore attached to each one are a great way to show games that cannot be in Smash proper.

(AAAAAHHH SMASH IS SO FUN... Ahem. Nintendo should announce the release date for Smash U already...)

The only thing really off putting about the Unfinished Smash video was Jeff yawning. That was a total mood killer.

Just have a Wii U quick look with Alex and Vinny. Even if they neither of them like it (I honestly can't remember their opinions) they're at least more likely to give it a shot and get in to the craziness. And play with Patrick and Dan online or something.
