Giant Bomb #9 | More Dan Meets The Eye

I love Smash Bros with all my heart, but I do agree with Jeff about the way Final Smashes work. I've always hated that stupid Smash Ball, my social group wound up switching them off in Brawl after the first day. A meter you build up would be much better.

I love the Smash Ball system. When everyone knows it's worth getting it really changes the fight when it spawns. During the UPF segment (haven't watched the Unfinished yet) Dan was pretty much the only one going after it. Also stealing it from someone is the best.

Age absolutely determines what games your exposed to. If you're 20 years old, chances are you've never been exposed to excite bike.

Research makes up for lack of exposure, but I was talking about reverence, anyway. It's not at all predetermined by age. Also, I'm mainly interested in the enthusiast community whereas you're probably talking about broader demographics (?). But ok, we can agree to disagree.

Why are you all so surprised about them not liking Smash much? Didn't Brad say on the bombcast a few weeks ago that it's good that Dan is there so they don't have to keep pretending to like Smash Bros? And Jeff has always been pretty dismissive of Smash Bros and especially of the competitive Smash scene iirc.

I always respected that Smash has no real blatant leanings when it comes to what franchises and eras it represents. Obviously the bigger franchises get more nods, but very few crossover/nostalgia games pay respect across the entire spectrum of a developer's output.

Like, Sonic Transformed tries with NiGHTS and Shinobi and Shenmue, but it's still called Sonic; it still lacks Phantasy Star and Shining Force. PSABR tried with MediEvil and Ape Escape, but it still has all the co-marketing, it still lacks Crash Bandicoot and Syphon Filter and Shadow of the Colossus. Even UMvC3 manages to fuck up with the Mega Man stuff.

...and then there's Smash, with Duck Hunt Dog vs Shulk vs Wii Fit Trainer vs Charizard. It's a cut above when it comes to the fanservice, undeniably. Unless you're a Metroid fan.

I've always thought it had that gb kind of vibe to it, but I guess not

Well they're not into Nintendo (sans Dan) so it makes sense that they aren't interested in a Nintendo mascot fighter, though that doesn't stop them from acknowledge what Smash does (like how Jeff acknowledges Dota 2).

I expected the smash bros segment in unpro to be way worst considering the impressions from this thread. It was fine. They weren't even that negative.

For me it wasn't that they were negative about the game (which they generally weren't, even Jeff seemed to be having a fine time), it's that I find the game pretty boring to watch, especially the 3DS version which is pretty ugly all blown up like that.

Alright, that's fair enough.

Can we all just agree that their time would have been better spent with another Metal Gear Scanlon video?

I really want another Metal Gear Scanlon video.

We just got one!
agreed

How far are they through the game, anyway? I want to see Drew play Tanker, aka the best level of any video game ever.

I echo the comment a couple of people made about the latest mgscanlon episode. Didn't seem like he was enjoying much of what he played at all.

I hope he does play mgs2, though I don't think the difference in mechanics are anywhere near as night and day different as dan was saying. First person shooting is a huge addition, but I could just as easily see it being an added layer of control complexity for drew, given how he's handling mgs' controls right now. For the most part though it plays quite similarly to mgs.

I'm playing through it again right now, and raiden's dialogue is so dumb at times (all the time?). Like when he's talking to
richard ames
, and
ames
suggests using nanocommunication to talk privately, and raiden says "nanocommuncation!?" as though he's unfamiliar with the god damn thing in his ear that he's been using to communicate for the entire game.

Imagine Dan's face when he realised that he got hired to be in an office where pretty much everyone else dislikes most of Nintendo's current output.

I think Drew will have a far easier time with MGS2. Mechanically, it's aged much better than MGS1 has.

I dunno. I'm playing them back to back and not seeing how the improvements solve the issues drew is having with the game.

I think it would have been more entertaining if they played stock so you can tell who's winning, then they'd get more into it. While they weren't negative they didn't seem to care about the result which defeats the point of local Co op really

"They didn't seem to care" is an insult regularly leveled against the good folks of giantbomb.com

Their weakest content is generally the stuff they cover out of duty instead of interest/curiosity/enthusiasm.

Timed matches shouldn't even be an option in Smash. It's horrible.

That's not the problem with the Smash video, Jeff spends most of the quick look on a pulpit.

I had a dream that I was listing to a podcast with Jeff, Brad, Vinny and Ryan. Talking about destiny. And I recall from it is Ryan saying how Destiny just sucks massive balls.

man :(

I played the beta on PS3. Apart from the shadows, distance vistas and the visuals looking terrible, it was impressive for a PS3 game and I didn't suffer frame drops. There were a few instances of lagged sounds effects when dying.

I couldn't stop laughing while playing Destiny last night after listening to the podcast, as the very first mission I played for the night was going back through the same fucking area as the last mission and having a bored Dinklage scan a console while I fought off enemies. The next mission? The same thing, but with more waves of enemies.

How did they go from such great mission and encounter design to... that? Like, who thinks in 2014 that "You know what people love, especially during boss fights? Endlessly respawning enemies from monster closets."

I think Dan needs to be helping Drew a lot more. He was completely overthinking the Sniper Wolf fight.

You get her in your sights then follow her with the cursor. If you get the first shot, she just gets up and moves again. That's basically it. It's barely a full-fledged boss fight and they didn't really do much with the concept until MGS3.

Dan could have easily explained that to Drew after his third time trying to jump around.

Is there anything else you can do in Destiny beside run, shoot, and dance? Just meaningful interactions that they could've put in to the game to give off at least the semblance of variety? The music seems to be great when it kicks in, kinda wish the game lived up to that more.

Is the PS3 version of Destiny's framerate supposed to be dogshit or is it their capture stuff?

I've been playing the PS3 version (I should probably buy a PS4 soon, hah) but the framerate is a consistent 30. I think I've noticed one drop and I've been playing it since release.

finally watching the rest of mgs part 4
god dammit drew this grey fox section is killing me lol

edit: you guys can complain all you want about how "bad" mgs' controls are, but god damn most of the issues are because of drew's seemingly TOTAL lack of pattern recognition and insistence on mashing buttons instead of just pressing them once or twice
that segment where grey fox disappears and warps behind you near the end of the fight was fucking driving me crazy lol. drew: "what did i do wrong?!"

oh my god O_O
there's still 30 minutes left in this video

...he's not going to STILL be fighting grey fox this whole time?
is he?

oh my god drew

I was going to say I don't think Drew plays a lot of games with reflex-sensitive situations, but then I remembered he's a huge Halo fan, so I don't know.

I feel like sometimes they do ham up things for podcasts and videos.
