it was a strong showing for trailers and getting people hyped, but as for actual games, it was ok.
Like I've said before, I get why GB feels the way they do. They'd rather play the game then gawk at CG trailers or kickstarters. If they wanted to be marketed to, then they'd just watch a sizzle reel or something.

Yup, but W101 demoed poorly and it ended up being one of my favorite games ever. I have faith in Kamiya to put out a solid game more than anyone else, even if it probably won't be well received by a majority of the critics/players like W101 was.

But we're only talking about the conference itself. I mean Death Stranding isn't coming out for god knows how long. It was still one of if not the high point of Sony's conference.

I liked this year's show because I think a lot of the games that were shown (except Kojima's thing) felt very tangible. Last year had some crazy announcements but none of them felt tangible. To paraphrase the FF7R trailer, they were promises that had been made.
Everything here felt different. Horizon and Resi 7 are out in February, Last Guardian has a friggin' release date, Spider-Man is an Insomniac joint so you know it'll come out on time and Days Gone and God of War sure look like real things.
I was disappointed they didn't have more, but adjusting to the format, I dug it.

They should probably also clarify then whenever they are marketed to during the press conference and explain why they like it when they do. That's not really a compatible sentiment with when they approve of how literally anything other than a game is advertised.

Didn't care much for Sony's show or pretty much most of what I saw at E3 this year. All the games I care about either weren't shown off (like Berserk musou) or already have release dates/trailers out already.
RE7 is super cool though, and I'm excited for Zelda tomorrow.

Yeah I definitely don't get people being annoyed about how 'conceptual' the show was.
Definitely way less pie-in-the-sky this year than last year.
That's the funny thing; they were right to be down on DOOM before its release based on everything we were all showed. Turns out that advertising matters, and critiquing canned demos does too. But hey, look! That doesn't harm the final product. Look at how much of a darling DOOM has become since release!
You know what would have helped DOOM even more? Maybe if the demos weren't shit, and just showed someone playing 10 minutes of it proper-like, people would have been more readily accepting of its silliness, and even more eyes would be on a fucking awesome game that deserves the praise it's getting.
Likewise, if Days Gone had looked like more than "Last of Us but kinda open world and more zombies?" it would have grabbed the Bombers more. As is...I understand the tepid response.

I think they enjoyed watching actual gameplay of things. Like the coke game, horizon, god of war, they seemed into that. But things that were just trailers with no semblance of gameplay they didn't seem into.
The only thing that was straight up missing from Sony's E3 was a high profile independent game. I hope they find a balance between the too much volume approach of the last years and this year's no volume approach.
They also still have Gamescom and TGS to show stuff. MS usually shows just one new game at Gamescom and misses TGS.

They also literally enjoyed the pure spectacle of Project Scorpio's reveal while commenting on how smart they were wording its selling points. How long did they spend putting a controller together?
What does that have to do with a press conference at that time? Can we preemptively, retroactively downgrade every press conference this E3 because nothing released isn't out yet?

This year is pretty meh all around. Sony did nothing for me. Microsoft unveiling customizable XBone controllers is my highlight so far.

I'm surprised people aren't really excited, I feel like we got a lot to be excited about.
- Horizon looked amazing.
- Detroit's premise was very interesting even if the writing was a bit spotty.
- That Spiderman game could be the stuff of dreams.
- A very interesting new take on God of War.
- A Crash Bandicoot ground-up remaster!
- Resident Evil 7 that looks very different
- Last Guardian is actually really coming out!
The only dud in the conference was the generic zombie game in my opinion. Even the VR showcase had some standout moments like RE7.

I really don't see how that affects the quality of the conference itself.
I didn't like it last year as it seemed to be ticking boxes and didn't have enough same year games. I mean other than TLG are those even PS4 games ?
Honestly, I'm having a hard time believing that people call this a good showing. One is just a remake, one has been stuck in development hell for almost 10 years and I'm with Jeff when it comes to Shenmue 3.
The conference had no flow, the VR segment jammed awkwardly into the COD trailer which needed some preamble it didn't get.
Days Gone's demo needed someone talking about it detailing it's world and features, and besides that it just doesn't look interesting. Maybe Days Gone is really unique but that wasn't on display. The only thing that really stuck was the Horizon demo. Microsoft had a way better showing.
Quantic Dream has yet to make a game that lives up to it's premise and maintains a baseline of competency throughout, I refuse to continue to give them passes for trying.

They liked designing a controller because it was dumb. They put the term "PlayStation" on it.
And as far as last year goes, they didn't give much of a shit about a kickstarter announcement of a series they weren't mostly into before, didn't have much love for what was somewhat of a tech demo/target render of a game there weren't mostly into before, and didn't flip their shit over a presumed-vaporware game kept on life support (while it was rumoured the creator was off the spiritual sequel of games they were into before).

Like, The Year of Dreams may be accurate, because reality this sure as hell ain't. Not a year later, even.

Never liked crash, gow or spiderman, never getting excited for a cage game after heavy rain, resident evil is pretty eh for me now (though really, the only resi game I've ever completed was 4 so i don't know how I feel about that franchise), and while I'm excited for the last guardian can anyone who has actually followed it's development feel 100% confident that it won't be a clusterfuck?

I think its a good showing because they're all games I want to play. I loved Crisis Core's battle system and playing FF7 with a similar gameplay setup and improved visuals sounds rad. Last Guardian's dev time doesn't really mean much to me - TF2 had a 9 year dev time with radical changes and I loved the final product so much I have over 3000 hours in it. I'm not sure what Jeff said about Shenmue 3 but getting the conclusion in the trilogy is pretty exciting.
Obviously it would be a weak showing if you don't care about any of the games, but I think that would be a minority of gamers.

People have wildly different a taste a lot of people thought Sony's E3 last year was the best they have had and this years was great i am one of those people.
Not everyone who is a fan of GB has this pessimistic/cynical attitude towards games.

That's exactly where I am. I never paid attention to any E3 leaks, either, so it's not like my tepidity's from having the surprise snatched. But the field as a whole's still new and exciting and crazy now more than ever with VR it's just that my niches aren't represented well in these venues. And that's perfectly fine. It's less cynicism and more being spoiled for choice. You don't have to be excited for something that doesn't fully gel, because now there are a lot more games that do.

Without trying to sound like a cynical, pessimistic dick, let me tell you this: I fucking love video games, and I'd call this year's Sony conference a "Meh, sure, I guess"/10. Some highs, some lows.

Who knows if this is true but like I said in the Sony thread, it did feel weird that they would close the show with a gameplay video of a game that was shown early on, don't think I've ever seen that happen before.
Also Days Gone. Kind of a wet fart of a demo.
They were called jaded last year, they're called jaded this year, they're always jaded in their podcasts, do you think it might be because they're jaded? Nah, couldn't be.
I love the guys, have been listening to them since 2008 but these dudes are the most jaded and cynical people in the gaming press.
She's a good presentator with good comedic timing and is very clever and she can also poke fun of the conference without is sounding like she's pandering or just making fun of everyone. They're smart to keep bringing her each year.
Their reception to that game was mild, at best. They were waiting for a hook/twist that never came, with the end result being an OK looking zombie game that doesn't stand out in that genre.
Sony should have had Persona 5 there instead, lol

I thought the Sony conference was cool. If i am buying a new machine in 18 months all I wanted was what games I will be playing in that time period.
She's legit okay and has been improving year after year.
Not being blinded silly by trailers and logo reveals does not mean jaded and cynical. People say they were down on Sony but they all came away excited about something from it. Just not the package.
Thus why I used the term wet fart. It came out feeling okay, but yet if you shift in your seat something feels a little wrong.

I really wish they stopped with putting someone with a controller on stage 'pretending' to play a game while its clear that the gameplay is pre-recorded.

I've been subscribed to GB for 4 years now and having listened to them across so many podcast, quick-looks and conference shows, they are easily the most jaded group of gamers I've come across in years, lol
I can't get mad tho because they are a great cast of experts with amusing insights into the industry.
I thought the conference was great, I thoroughly enjoyed it, I felt like the games spoke for themselves in most cases. The only thing that got muddled was the VR section. They should have had someone talking us through that.
It was certainly a different tactic for a Sony conference and I enjoyed it for that reason, as in they resisted the urge to show pie charts.
I feel very different to the guys at GB, I think my positivity makes them seem negative in contrast. But they make fair points, and wanting a more obvious flow through the show is fair enough. I missed having an Indie segment, and it needed 100% more Shu.

No, they're not jaded because they didn't get hyped about Sony's conference, they're jaded because they've been in this press for +20 years and they rarely ever show any excitement for anything.
