Giant Bomb Endurance Runs: Season Two - Who The Hell Is Zach?

It's funny. It appears that the only person who really disliked the game was Jeff. I was really happy to hear that both Brad and Ryan did seem to appreciate it, in the end.

I enjoyed the endurance run, but I thing BR kind of missed the point, especially Brad. He read too much about the game outside of the shows. I really wish they would discover the map to unlimited 10mm on their own, walkie-talkie as well and do more sidequests. Also I got a feeling from one of the episodes (can't remember which one though) that Brad read somewhere about George and he tried to compensate by always questioning Ryan's theories in later ones, but that might just be me.
i agree that the ideal ER would be flown blind, but if BR didn't know about some of that stuff they probably wouldn't have bothered with it, and the game would have been 10 times more annoying to watch.

and i think Brad did say someone spoiled the game for him, but it's not like he can help that.

The Persona 4 ER definitely wasn't flown blind, considering how often Vinny and Jeff got help from comments. It shouldn't be surprising that there would be more of the same in DP.

And Brad did get spoiled, just like how Jeff got spoiled due to that P4 hiimdaisy comic that people kept linking to.

So what was that thing that Emily gave to the kids to give to Zach? We never did get to see it.
It was her necklace, the one from her mother. She mentions it during the scene where she is all dressed up and meets York and George at Galaxy of Terror.

Well, it's a shame to see the ER finally come to an end. I'm glad that in the end Brad and Ryan could see past all the obvious problems and get sucked in by the story despite all the moaning along the way.

It's her locket. Specifically Emily's Mom's locket that she wore. She talked about it during the bar scene iirc when she's in the pretty dress.

edit : beaten but i got the picture, so it's still new :p

So the Swery interview in "A huge podcast approaching" clarified quite a bit of stuff.

- Swery himself is not sure what the zombies (Shadows) really are, but he would say they are a "psychological occurrences" (in contrast to a physical phenomenon) if he had to name it
- the Shadows are indeed the people from the incident in the 1950s
- Kaysen is one of many "Agents from the Red Tree" and his "eternal mission is to spread evil"; his immortality or supernatural existence is no result from eating red seeds
- the military incident was initiated by Kaysen to make his mission easier but it somehow failed

I know most people already figured that stuff out, but I was still not really satisfied with the clues the game gave us, so it's nice to have it confirmed by Swery. :p

They seem hellbent on never doing another Endurance Run ever again. That is literally the only reason I ever go to giantbomb :(

They said the same thing after Persona 4 :P We just have to wait awhile and hope that the perfect game comes along, personally i really want two ER of two different games.

Huh .. is the 18 days a coincidence or is the game supposed to take place over a span of those limited number of days anyway ?

edit : I guess they didn't fail missions (VJ did once but reloaded) otherwise it asks them to come back the next day at the same time right ?

Neither group did a whole lot of wandering around for sidequests, I'm sure that could have changed the amount of in-game days it took.

Yeah, the game does a bad job of explaining it, but you can miss windows and just do a mission the next day. I did the majority of the game thinking you had to complete stuff on that day.

eh, i didn't watch the P4 Endurance Run so i wouldn't know anything about the precedent. i just think it's funner to watch the guys discover stuff on their own rather than just go "well, i read on the internet we're supposed to do this, so let's go."

I felt that both BR and VJ rushed through the entire game. That side mission list was huge and they both picked up early on that doing side missions can get you some really great stuff, but neither of them hardly did any. They'd rather kill 8 hours of in-game time smoking in the middle of the street instead of using that time getting better equipped, which just led to combat frustration. What's even worse is when they'd start a side mission and then completely drop it after 5 minutes. Anna's dress, getting Polly's item from her room, bone collecting... argh.

Most of them were a flat out chore to do & the rewards for 90% of them... trading cards!

Zombie James said:
Speaking of which, what's the Panda Bear reward to showing him all your cards?

Infinite durability lightsaber. Before that you get some kind of special SMG.

Also, the reward for doing side-quests isn't "cards" or "weapons" per se. The REAL rewards are getting to listen to and talk to the crazy citizens of Greenvale, and get attached to the place.

Think of how much more impactful some of these scenes would have been if they had actually spent days talking to Emily as she practices her cooking, or becoming friends with the twins.

SWERY's blog even talks about how the game encourages... uh, "stalking." It's like in Shenmue or Majora's Mask, where everyone has a daily schedule and half of the fun of the game is following them around in real-time.

A lot of the sidequests aren't trading cards, they give more cars, weapons, suits, items, etc. There's a lot of infinite weapons in particular they completely missed...I have a wrench, grasscutter, chainsaw, killer's axe, magnum, RPG, flamethrower and some other stuff I forget. Plus some like Anna's diary add to the story, or the whole Becky/Quinn side plot that they skipped over.

Wesley gives you a discount, then a suit(Passion Red), another suit(Dancing All Night) and then the last reward is an infinite Light Sword.

If they didn't do this(or something similar) for P4, they won't do it for DP.

Only two of them played P4 so it was different. Now that all four of them have either watched or played the game to the end it only makes sense for them to do a spoilercast of some sort.

My guess is the sidequests they got from Keith totally drained any care they had for other sidequests. The infinite shotgun was a really useless prize after a whole lot of tedious ceiling ladies. And while I doubt many other (if any) quest lines dealt with similar locations, I don't really blame them.

Plus, if the game releases in Aus anytime soon, I'll give me something to look forward to when I play the game myself. Like, no crap, the day Deadly Premonition comes out in Aus is the day I'll rebuy an Xbox. :D

It would be kind of awesome if they saved that for E3 and tried to get Shane on their podcast to talk about it... but I guess by that time it'll all be E3 shenanigans (NEVER?! MAYBE).

In my opinion, the stuff you get for the sidequests isn't nearly as important as getting to know the cast of characters better.

Exactly. The characters are the strongest part of the game by far.

Watched all of VJs run, outside the shooting the game seemed really cool, wish they'd found some way to do away with the shooting and focus the gameplay on the characters and the town instead. Maybe some kind of quirky dating sim, doing quests to earn everyones trust and unlock the truth.

Love the ER concept, i think the idea of 2 runs of the same game was a bit redundant, would have preferred if they'd done it with something like silent hill where things could have turned out different.

just finished watching both teams tonight. i enjoyed it thoroughly and im kind of sad that it's over. not sure what game they will use next time but i think overlooked games or rough gems like DP work best for endurance runs.

I was hard on BR in the beginning, but it was great to see them--especially Ryan--really get into the game by the end. The game has so many flaws, but the overall experience is great and refreshing if you gel with what the game offers, which seemed to be Ryan's take. Simply a great ER. Hopefully this will become a Giantbomb tradition as both teams did a fantastic job of entertaining their viewers, and (IMO, of course) their ER's are absolutely the most interesting content being produced by the gaming media.

My thanks to all involved in the creation of the ERs and DP.

Did I just miss it or did BR get a slightly shorter ending than VJ? During the ending that VJ got there was a brief scene of Emily and York holding hands and kissing in the diner while surrounded by Diane, Becky, Thomas, and Anna. Unless I missed it, BR didn't get that scene.

You missed it, because they got that scene.

OK cool, I'm glad they got to see it because that scene is the biggest payoff in the game, IMO. It made me feel genuinely sad.

And I agree with Brad's statement about thanking Shane for his work in bringing the game to the USA. Has Shane been on any podcasts to discuss DP?
