Giant Bomb - Extra Life 2015 | Give Money to Children's Hospitals

better ban the internet

You won't fix things with generalizations.

Many sites nowadays limit community interactions with staff to social media. If you create/do something people like, they can contact a person that way. If people are assholes to people directly, they can block them. Of course there is no way around targeted attacks, but those people will be assholes regardless. I write a few reviews for much less visible places than the GB, and the few times people said something to me was via Twitter and email. Mostly people are nice, helpful, but a few are highly aggressive because of anonymity.

Instant contact methods make decent people post shitty things without thinking. If you have to work a small bit, it weeds out a whole bunch of needless fluff, and make interaction much better.

Chat has rarely helped GB expect with technical issues, and comments have never rose have been a echo chamber. I am surprised they are still tolerated when they are constantly misused by sections of the community, and can make the site as a whole look distasteful.

Chat is there for the community of the site to communicate with each other. This is how communities are built. You're talking about being surprised that chat is still tolerated by the site...unless I'm misreading this part-

Nah, chat is fine the way it is. Stopping the fans of the site from communicating with each other and every once in a while having the staff read it is well..short sighted and naive. And I'm sure the mods will do a fine job of stopping people who intend to harass someone through chat. Despite that, chat is a useful part of any website or community. Still, there should be no need to punish the whole community by limiting chat because of the actions of a few(Who are banned anyways by the mods.) is...just stupid.

I'm really with you on the comments on videos. they always devolve into some really awful arguments, the UPF videos are sometimes the worst when like, Rorie makes a dumb joke.

I've learned to turn off chat and never care to look at it, whether it be twitch or GB chat.

Oh man, that's so devilish of them to make all of those words things that you might say without thinking about it. That's just mean.

The GB community has a bad reputation and it's a continuous problem. Non-premium chat especially gets incredibly awful. The comment section... well, I stay away from that pretty hardcore. I hate that because I love the Giant Bomb staff and everything they produce. They seem like genuinely good people but there are a lot of bad things about their community that I keep hoping they figure out a way to fix. I'd love to get on their site and chat sometime but I don't want to be associated with that. I think Keyser Soze posted a pretty good idea.

That's why this game is great. It fucks with you at every opportunity. It's not a game about defusing a bomb, it's a game about learning to communicate effectively and efficiently.

Does it? I don't get the sense that it's considered worse than any other gaming site's community.

EDIT: Alexis' maze reading is hilarious.

Uh, twitch and youtube? The vast majority of what GB does is just what twitch and youtube personalities do but through their own website, and fan interaction/comments/chat are a huge part of those platforms.

Half the fun of chat is just watching reactions to things, like everyone spamming "wow" or "wtf" when something weird/cool happens. I don't think chat is any good for actually chatting and I don't think that's a problem.

Yeah, exactly. Chat is a lot of fun if you're there as part of it, and for smaller streams you can even chat a bit with other users. But for the bigest, livest streams, watching it ebb and flow, reacting to what's happening is Maximum Fun™... except when it's not.

Moderation and cooldowns and such are definitely needed. In spite of this, removing chat would be a net negative for live shows. It's a delicate balance.
