Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

I don't know if it was just me, but Jeff didn't seem as apathetic towards Rocket League as he has in the past. While he said he didn't care that much for Rocket League during the GOTY deliberations, the rubber match video was clearly filmed after that. Now granted, in the middle match (or was it the first?) he was quite sick, so that probably soured his impression of the game. But in the video today, he seemed to be enjoying himself quite a bit in a way he didn't in the past with the game.

that's because he had business to take care of last year

and that was to elevate mario maker to #1

Finally finished the deliberations. Really like their top 10, only thing I didn't like was
how the best moment category worked out
but everything else was great.

The MVP of these deliberations was Alex, but mad props to Vinny for backing him on
Firewatch
for story and
Thumper
in the final category, especially with letting
Zero Time Dilemma
go, what a good guy.

I don't feel like I heard a decent case from Jason for
HyperLight
-- I know a couple other people liked it. But Jason tends not to really make an argument for his choice, I feel like he just shuts down by reacting as if his choice is some sort of objective fact -- and that everyone is just kind of weird that they're not on board. To be fair Jeff does this too, but totally backs it up with an actual point of discussion or explained opinion. I haven't read Jason's personal list -- but at least Dan had
Stardew
at number one, that's a decent amount of clout for your pick right there, even if he didn't make a good case for his game. I thought Alex made a good case for
Thumper
though, and Vinny's backup sealed the deal on that one. The
Uncharted
compromise was interesting, although I might have been more bitter about it if they didn't just talk a bunch of sugar about it in best story, further props to Vinny for sorting that shit out.

I think the lowest point in these discussions was the Best Overwatch Character of the Year segment, Dan trying to force arbitrary rules on the catagory was pretty infuriating at the beginning -- plus he had like 8 picks despite it being a 3 character list, he got it together in the end though thankfully. I almost hate to say this considering some of the fucked up shit that was levelled at Dan the other day in this thread -- that was appalling, the guy doesn't deserve that shit. All in all, another great year!

Its kind of funny to see people saying Alex/Drew are MVPs today when it felt like all week I saw people bitching about how Drew didn't talk enough or Alex kept saying he added something to the list "just to give it props" and were tired of it.

I love all the conversation that happens even if its them dismissing some game/something about a game that I love. Its super fun. People get way too emotionally involved in this stuff.

might be the most I've been disappointed in a game ever. Surprised Vinny enjoyed it as much as he did.

It's the Metal Gear Solid 2 twist, where you find out that series isn't really what you thought it was.
Going from "Let's save this one timeline!" to "All the timelines are irrelevant you dummies"
I get why people hate that game for being unsatisfying, I loved it though. Just wish the stupid fragment system kept you from getting all of the great moments an hour into the game.

gotta give alex props for putting a picture of Reinhardt that has Zenyatta next to him

Him channeling Daniel Plainview was a great moment. The realest. I feel like he could've murdered someone with a bowling pin right there.

From the people I know, even those who waited years for Hyper Light Drifter, everyone thought it was just ok. I tried it and stopped after an hour. I can see the appeal though. It just sticks out on the list because no one actually made any arguments for it. Not even Jason.

It's way too easy. The game never pushes you to your limits with the combat, so it's just like, whatever, this is a nice-looking Zelda-clone.

Essentially, I wanted Furi, but I got like pixelart Oceanhorn.

GOTY:
Seeing
Picross 3D
come so close to making the list hurt, but
Hitman winning
helped quell the pain.

I didn't get Drew's arguments about the "site's list" at all, especially when it comes to Overcooked and Picross. They all but Jeff like Overcooked. Sure, it's nobody's number 1 but almost everyone enjoyed that game. What else do you need to put it on the list?

The other extreme is Picross. Three liked it A LOT. Jeff, Drew and Dan. Brad dismissing Picross 3D 2 was the biggest crime of these deliberations. "It's not that new" or whatever, give me a break. It's the second Picross 3D and its changes make so much sense you wonder how they weren't in Picross 3D, that's how natural they feel. And we're talking about a guy who went into battle for Far Cry 4 for crying out loud.

I feel like Jason did mention some things how much he loved the combat and graphics? It wasnt the full spiel we got for Stardew and Thumper but hes in a room with a group of people who have been professional critics for well over a decade, so I can see how his points may end up being less articulate and expressive.

Wow, this is why I love GB so much, their list is amazing and kinda shitty DOOM didn't win but seriously Hitman is amazing and all the content GB made around that game was absurd. Great list overall although I would've preferred The Witness above Overwatch.

Why would anyone talk about Symmetra? This was before she got buffed to be useful and not a pick that causes immediate disgust worse then Hanzo

Reinhardt is probably the most important Overwatch character across all metas. Like they said, you build a team around Reinhardt. He is your anchor.

SYMMETRA IS COOL

Austin's last gift to Giant Bomb was the power to believe in your favourite game.

Austin would have filibustered until he got Invisible Inc. on the list. I'm kinda glad the bottom three were added and there wasn't any arguing about their placement. Like, not only did he get a game on the list that practically no one cared about, but he manged to get it to spot #9. I feel like he should have been glad it was even on the list at all, kinda like how Dan was with his favorite game.

I agree that Picross deserved a spot on that list, but it didn't have the passion to stick around in the bottom three. It was in the same position as Uncharted 4 - enjoyed by (nearly) all, loved by a few, but lacking the one person ready to bring strong points in the game's favor. Had Jeff decided to fight for Picross, I'm sure he could've gotten it in. But it's a hard game to be passionate for - ultimately, it's just an outstanding execution on a smart concept. Its achievements are subtle ones - the fluidity of the controls, the satisfying feel of tapping out blocks. It's a game that inspires tranquility, not exuberation.

Best story did not go down as I expected.
Zero Time Dilemma nearly made it, DOOM did make it, and Firewatch nearly didn't.

I am glad at how the GOTY happened.
The removal of Uncharted 4 so that Stardew Valley, Thumper, and Hyper Light Drifter could all make it was a pleasant surprise. Hitman beating DOOM was also excellent.

So... early 2017 predictions?

Mass Effect will be on there.
Some 2 hour indie game will be one there (/brad)
Zelda
Horizon (thought it may get the Uncharted 4 treatment.)
Red Dead 2, if it comes out without delay.
Persona 5....maybe.

Horizon shouldn't get the Uncharted treatment. A lot of the gripes for that was that UC4 was "more of the same just better". If Horizon lives up to the hype, the gameplay will be awesome.

Persona 5 will be interesting. The GBCrew has problems with finishing the long games in time (not giving them shit about it) but with how much Jeff and Vinny liked 4 and how impressive the style has been from the trailers, I'm looking forward to seeing how it pans out.

I'm curious about the new Mass Effect. At this point I'm still not convinced it'll come out in 2017, they've been so quiet on it so far... if a huge delay pops up I wouldn't be surprised.

Zelda won't win because they hate Nintendo.
Horizon won't win because they hate Sony.
Whatever Microsoft brings out won't win because they hate Microsoft.

Actually, if Horizon features enough busy work, blueprints and crafting it could win because Brad.

Big fan of all the GOTY content! I was originally kind of bummed that we weren't getting silly videos for announcing the category winners, but the content they did do was so good! Hitmas and Rockband were easily two of my favorite GB videos this year. It's always great to see the whole crew interact. Happy with the top 10 list as well, especially with their pick for #1.

Next year looks excellent. We'll have some VR fallout as promises made fail to materialize. We'll get a super salty GB Persona community because they won't like P5 enough or too much. Destiny 2 is looming in September with promises of #content and #engagement. But I'm most excited about the next David Cage emotion engine hitting the wall yet again.

Absolutely impossible to predict. This time last year everyone expected Hitman and Doom's latest entries to be trash.

Shadow of Mordor 2 will be announced and released in 2017, it will be the same exact game and it will win GOTY.

It's because he seems to have approached the series as telling a story of silly nonsense and not a masterclass in story telling across all mediums.
