Dishonored's biggest weakness is its aesthetic. Steampunk/whalepunk/whatever is very overwrought. Some people love it but it also repels its share of people, too. I'm talking about the entire genre, not just Dishonored.

Say what you will about personal preferences on that sort of style, but Dishonored II has one of the most consistent and thought out art styles and art direction, the world feels alive and has a real deep layer of personality to it, not only in environmental storytelling but it's dedication to it's own style, nothing feels out of place but at the same time it all feels out of place because it's a twisted version of modern day stuff. I absolutely love it, but I can see why people would be turned off by it.

Never heard of whalepunk before, I guess it fits, and it does turn me away a bit. The biggest factor for me not being interested in Dishonored 2 was Dishonored 1 though.

This makes me wish Alex won that argument. Orb son is truly beautiful.
Zarya still the best tho.

I would ordinarily fall in love with something like Dishonored because of its gameplay and gorgeous environmental art, but both it and 2 (so far, just started) are games that can't quite fully seal the deal on engrossing me because the approach to storytelling is throwing a lot of different types of lore at you at once, and I can't quite connect to it.

I only got maybe a third of the way through Dishonored, but I thought the world they built was great. I'm just not that into stealth games.

Dishonored, for a game in a genre about experimentation, is oddly judgmental about how you play. 2 has a graph at the end of each level to show you what contributed to your current chaos level, which at first seemed neat but eventually started feeling more like it was marking you down for not being pure stealth even if getting spotted once or twice is a negligible thing that only stops you ftom getting a perfect checkmark. On the bright side, it gives you more powers that aren't only good for murder, unlike the first game.

Has Brad repented for mistakenly identifying the PC port of ME3 as the "bad one" over ME2? ME2's PC version is fucking terrible, that is a horrendous reason to disqualify it.

Oh right, Mass Effect 2 is the one where controllers don't work and where I had to open up the task manager because it freaked out over dual core processors.

I don't recall having any issues with Mass Effect 2 on PC. Mass Effect 1, however, was all kinds of messed up.

Mass Effect 1 is kind of a mess no matter the platform. They are clearly pushing that early version of Unreal Engine 3 in ways it should not go.

ME2 and 3 I think are OK on PC but they are KB+M only and thats a bummer. Oh and the DLC situation on PC of really terrible.

Seriously. The only reason I want a remaster is just to be able to have all that DLC in one easy to get package.

The lightning gets fucked up near the end of Mass Effect 1 on PC. You have to disable it via console until you get pass it. I read it had something to do with the dual core processors.

No other issues on my end with any of the games. Super smooth framerate downsampled from 2880x1620 (I have an old computer) with controller support mod on all the games.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!

Yep. I would consider buying an Xbone to replay this trilogy ahead of playing them on PC for this reason and for proper gamepad support. (Actually are the DLC supported on Xbone?)

I assume DLC works for BC games.

But still at $15 a a pop that will add up. $60 + 3 games + all the DLC would be a amazing package that is probably too awesome for a company like EA to do.

I think the trilogy collection on PS3 is as close as we will get. That includes....

1 + its DLC
2 + all its DLC minus Arrival.
3 and no DLC

Thats a lot of game.

Another annoying thing that kept happening was Alex bringing up games that he was ready to fall on sword and eliminate when there were like 2-3 other people who liked it more than him and immediately chimed in to fight it. I swear it happened like 4-5 times in different categories.

"But I'm telling you I think those two moments are better than the first five minutes of doom and inside."

This best moment is brutal.

"Listen you son's of bitches, whose tracksuit is on these awards?"

Was a bit surprised Dishonored 2 wasn't even up for discussion on the top 10. I'm not a huge fan of it, only played about 50% of the missions before i dropped it, but i thought it was quite popular. Did they play it?

Welcome to the great Alex Nintendo betrayal of 2014.

Jason's the only one there that's played it, and I think he only got a couple missions in.

(Part of me hopes it might become their "Old Game of the Year" in 2017 -- after a few more patches and some DLC maybe the rest of the team will pick it up, since a lot of them were interested pre release and never had the time to play it)

I'm a bit surprised that Doom wasn't number one, but it's not a surprise to me that Hitman was the game that took it down. I must say though I really hated Jeffs case against Doom. The whole complete package concept is something I feel like they have ignored many times in past. Obviously the weak multiplayer in Doom rubs Jeff the wrong way pretty significantly, and I can understand it comes from an expectation based on what Doom was in the 90s, but that's letting nostalgia take over ones logic and that's never a good idea. They seperate campaign and multiplayer constantly, and usually rightly so. I mean, they didn't mention the much loved and widely well considered Uncharted multiplayer, which I know none of them care about, but it makes Uncharted more of a 'complete package', right? Well not really and who cares is the right answer to that question, but the argument is just weak anywhere it's used and I was really glad to hear Brad call it out. Doom's campaign is extraordinary and how good the multiplayer may or may not be is entirely irrelevent to that. That said all said, nothing tops the weakness of the argument of "two thirds of the menu options are bad". Come on, Jeff, you know that's bad logic.

But overall I'm pretty happy with their awards. I'm real glad Alex went into bat for Trico for best character, I expected TLG to be ignored, which would be understandable considering timing. Also Jason making sure Hyper Light Drifter got its rightly deserved recognition. I was worried it was just going to be ignored because if felt like they barely spoke of it when it was new. Overall I'm happy for Hitman to win, it's a great game and deserves props even despite the bad case against Doom being a part of its path to the number one spot. But with all that said they were always going to be wrong, we all know Overwatch is the real GOTY.

And on that, one final thought thought - Dan is a monster for what he said about Zarya.

Another thing - next year electrodes need to be attatched to each and every one of them and every time one of them says "this doesn't hang" a severe electric shock should be applied.

Weirdest thing for me was not a single mention of Final Fantasy XV or The Last Guardian.

I've been playing through XV all week and I think it's one of the best games of the year. I think not having someone like Patrick or Austin on staff really limits what can be nominated for things. Little bit dissappinting.

Pretty sure the deliberations were recorded before TLG released or very shortly afterwards.

TLG Alex had not finished when they recorded this and I don't think anyone on staff cares about Final Fantasy, or at least not any games in the series past...really VI.

Yeah Mei was robbed of top 3

Also just remembered they gave Winston some shit. Winston is amazing when you use him right. His my number two most played. My top 3 would be Mei, Winston, and Zenyatta.

I think they mentioned quickly during the graphics section, but anyway I don't think any of them really played FF15 much. Jason and Brad played a little bit, but even then they got someone from Gamespot to run the quicklook. Although even if they had played it much, I doubt they would have put it high in any categories. I liked it too though.

Man, I gotta give credit to Dan during this GOTY discussion:

Him bringing up dropping UC4 might be the best argument of the podcast so far. It 100% makes more sense to have three games that individual members of the crew are passionate about than having one game that everyone feels good about.

That was Vinny's idea

This Best Overwatch Character discussion is great.

And yeah. Tracer is terrible. I love her design but every time she talks is like nails on a chalkboard in a room of someone who is about 4 years behind on memes.

Oh and Mei is the devil.

Alex gave him shit for jumping away from the team behind enemy lines, which is what he's designed to do. It's like giving Reinhardt shit for not dealing enough damage, while he keeps his shield up.

Stardew in the Top Ten was cool because I love that game but I wish they hadn't just taken Invisible Inc precendent as sufficient. Make Dan do the work, I actually would've liked to have him wax poetical and just really go after it.

I feel like they would have been better served leaving Thumper and Stardew out of the top 10. The concept of "the site's list" is better interpreted by me to be a more consensus list. I get that a lot of people liked Stardew, but the farming sim is still a pretty niche genre and it didn't click with any of the other hosts. Same with Thumper. On the other hand, there's so much precedent for this in the discussion, why bother.

I know it will never happen, but I wish Jeff would remove himself from reviewing. I really enjoy him as part of the podcast, but his approach to games is like a child that's a picky eater. His ability to like games so often lies in their being restricted to a precious few genres and the way he will outright dismiss certain games is a disservice to the whole audience. I really liked Austin as the anti-Jeff but he's gone.

You mean to say Jeff has certain genres he likes and dislikes?
Preposterous.
Remove him from giving any opinions on videogames ever again.

Well, he also sort of plays that up for effect. His actual reviews are always much more nuanced than that (and well written). I mean, can you point out any specific reviews of his in the last couple of years that are actually dismissive in the way you're describing?

The nature of Giant Bomb also means he can primarily review games he already has some interest in (historically or currently), too. I sincerely doubt he would ever review, say, Red Dead Redemption 2 for the site.

I think Jeff is an amazing reviewer and I don't always agree with him. I think his reviews do a really good job of expressing how he felt about a game in a way that lets me make my own decisions on it's quality. My conclusion can be completely detached from his. To me that is the mark of a top tier reviewer.

Jeff has earned the unique position of being one of the most knowledgeable and experienced games critics working. I find his perspective far more valuable than someone with less experience who happens to share my tastes. Austin is amazing, but I don't think he is the anti-Jeff and he's not really gone, dude is already putting together something awesome over at Waypoint.

I base it purely off the way he talks about games on the podcast. Unless it's a fighting game, an FPS or some 16-bit game that he loves, his response his generally, "yeah, I played that game for an hour and never came back," or he didn't like it at all. He's always the guy who looks at the list and says he doesn't feel strongly about any of the games. His mind seems very closed and he never seems to see what might be fun, interesting or different about a game that doesn't perfectly meet his criteria for a good game.

Gone, as in not having an effect on th GB conversation.

But what you said is you want him out of reviews. You don't want him to review games he does enjoy and genres he has expertise on because you don't like his opinions on the podcast?

Also the meme of "Jeff doesn't like any video games" is as old as the internet. He only likes fighting games, FPS, and 16 bit? His GOTY list has a bunch of VR games, a racing game, a rhythm game, a F2P roguelike, a puzzle game, a hacking game, whatever the heck Rez is, another puzzle game, a couple of shooters, a stealth game, and whatever the heck Superhot is.

Dan's kind of bad at arguing the merits of games on these podcasts, I'm not sure he would have been able to deliver a good filibuster on it. It was good of them to just let him have the game since they know how much he likes it.
